To think in ten years all these huge veneers and huge lips will be seriously dated?

Eek, watching tv these days it's a sea of huge symmetrical bright white veneers.
So many of them look like they have got a teeth guard in when they are sucking on them.
Most of them just look really terrible and I dread to think what their long term teeth issues will be.
Add in the huge lips and filler faces and really it's a bit black mirror with all these faces looking the same. I know the lip filler can be dissolved but is that the same for all over the face? Will people be able to go back to how they were before once the filler blindness passes?
I've been watching old movies and the difference with natural teeth is quite something, it changes the natural shape of your face and everyone looks more individual .
Aibu or will it all look so dated in ten years and all these huge horsey veneers go out of fashion?
Or am I just getting old Grin

Glitchy MN!

I wrote: No way are they younger than 30 @ToriMJ

@Tangerinenets That sounds tough to live with. Can't you get any help on the NHS? Removal and uplift? Surely it's a risk to your health that should be taken into consideration. My sister is getting her boobs reduced and lifted (they are really huge naturally and causing tremendous back pain) I would really try.

CalmBalonz · 03/11/2024 05:12

They are horrendous now!

I don't care personally if people want the aesthetic (though I don't much care for it). As a social trend, that's something else. Socially, it's also about putting women on a constant treadmill to keep their looks, which isn't possible, and you don't know you've crossed the line into unnatural till you've done it. Cosmetic surgery is a business.

what concerns me, though, is that good work is not cheap. But people are getting it cheaply, through various ways (non medically trained providers, or doctors who aren't really trained in the speciality they need to be, or going abroad). Cosmetic treatment is often poorly regulated. Even for surgery, yes, you need to be a doctor, but depending on the country you may not need to be trained in that specific field of surgery and it's up to the patient to make sure they are actually registered as a plastic or cosmetic surgeon. That is how you end up on Botched. Where, by the way, the human Ken doll went on, and of course they wouldn't touch him (they always put on a patient who the doctors won't go near, because they're surgery addicts.)

That's a recipe for poor results, and sometimes dangerous ones. I know someone who went abroad for weight loss surgery because she wasn't eligible on the NHS and of course it was cheaper there. She got really ill, and the NHS did wind up having to foot the bill for the repair. Or all the Brazilian butt lifts where they remove fat from your midsection and inject it into your arse, which apparently reputable American surgeons won't do, but you can certainly get them in Tijuana.

if you do fillers wrong, you can cause a significant autoimmune reaction. Especially if you're a right idiot and get silicone injected.

and yes, teeth need to be significantly ground down to put crowns on. If anything goes wrong after that, it's root canal if you're lucky and extraction if you're not. That was one thing since I was replacing mismatched and elderly crowns on top of multiple root canals, but I wouldn't do it to healthy teeth. For most people, braces and teeth whitening are a better choice; you just won't get instant results or blinding teeth.

At least hideous false eyelashes will come off with makeup remover.

Watched a bit of Bridget Jones Edge of Reason last night. Everyone looked so normal!

DysonSphere · 03/11/2024 07:59

@Simonjt

The lip thing is interesting, lip filler has a big impact on speech, our son has a hearing impairment, for him lip reading is hugely beneficial especially in noisy places. As lip filler reduces normal lip movement he cannot read the lips of people who have it, one of the TAs at his last school was unable to work in his classroom due to it. His aunt who is convinced she has natural looking lipfiller, again, he cannot lip read with her anymore

Wow I would never have thought about that. That it can actually, in such a context, influence how effective you can be in your job. I bet no one has even considered that. Imagine being a nurse in a hospital working with a hearing impaired patient and they can't understand you!

BookishType · 03/11/2024 08:12

I think the facial extremes we saw a few years ago like sharpie or powder brows and Russian lashes have already faded into memory. Even the laminated brow look where they are stuck upright is looking dated now.

Micro blading has got really good and many are forking out to have fuller but natural looking brows. I think lip fillers will go the same way. Nobody wants to look really fake anymore.

Veneers are here to stay, I reckon. Who doesn’t want nice looking teeth? Manky teeth are the first thing I notice when I meet someone new. Most intelligent people would not go and get cheap Turkey teeth as they look bloody awful, but modern veneers done by a dentist who specialises can look completely natural and transformative.

ThePoshUns · 03/11/2024 08:31

Omg is that photo of Chrissy Tiegen up thread real? She looks awful. What a shame.

@GettingStuffed So the rather scary photos of prepped natural teeth (that sometimes look like points) are actually for crowns, rather than veneers?

Or is that if it’s done badly?

All that is supposed to be done for veneers is to roughen the surface to enable the veneers to stick, and it doesn’t actually harm the teeth.
Filing them down is preparation for crowns and much more drastic, it actually is the last resort. I see reports in the media of people going to Turkey for veneers and actually having crowns which may be unnecessary in some cases.

Given that just using whitening toothpaste is said by dentists to degrade enamel, I don't think "roughing the surface" is without a downside.

Pete Burns died of a sudden heart attack after he went under the knife for at least 300 times for cosmetic surgery. A few ended badly like one where his lips blew up and loads of yellow pus came out. Plus going under the knife hundreds puts stress on the heart..

Hope people are put off from plastic surgery from him.

Getting anything permanent or even semi permanent done when it’s fashionable seems like a bad idea. One of my personal bugbears is tattoo fashions. I have no problem with tattoos per se, but they shouldn’t be beholden to fashions. Gen X’s thick black Celtic and ‘tribal’ tats look really dated now, as do the Sailor Jerry style hipster tats from the early 2000s. The current detention desk look of Gen Z is going to date quicker than last year’s calendar.

I could never have a tattoo, it's way too permanent, but I do love having a temporary one, lasts for about a week or so.

I saw an influencer filming self at a London street market. From the side, her lower face looked like a facial deformity. Her whole mouth area protruded too far from face. Like her face was big eyelashes, huge lips. Talking talking about the exciting “antique” finds on a table full of basically junk.

She was only filming straight on. She was a petite person, like maybe only 5 ft, she looked Very full lips front on, but from side you wonder how she can speak.

In 1980s, she would have been considered a candidate for some sort of corrective surgery.

Defo going to be hanging down past her chin at some point ..

The virtue-signallers know all that full well, but their smugness and disingenuity keeps them warm at night!

So many people acting as if they can't see the difference between Bet Lynch and Marion Cotillard!

I couldn't care less to signal virtue (stupidest cliche ever). This is just a chatboard.

I dislike reading sneery comments about women's appearances and the associations made about them and say so. Those comments are never made about men. I don't like many aspects of personal adornment that other people enjoy. It's not my business.

I pity the generations that have social media to deal with as well as women like you. Before that it was just women like you.

I think it's fed by insecurity and instagram- the elusive insta lifestyle. Beautiful faces being manipulated.

I don't disagree with your posts, this thread could have been a useful discussion about why women (particularly) are being so heavily influenced to make these permanent adjustments to their looks. It is toxic, no doubt about it.

But the thread has been taken over by the usual posters who live to put women down. Shame.

This. Just using whitening is really bad too, enamel is there for a reason.

Mlanket · 02/11/2024 08:16

yeah It’s a pretty nasty thread regardless.
Imagine if it was about how awful overweight people looked…

How is that comparable? We are talking about people paying money to replace good teeth with ones that look “perfect” and the pressures to look a certain way.

This. Actively seeking to alter your appearance is very different. Not many people actually go out of their way to become overweight Confused

fashionqueen0123 · 03/11/2024 13:30

I guess the reason it looks so bad is because it looks so odd to the eye- it’s not how humans looks. It’s not like people get it done and you think oh that looks younger/fresh faced, natural but slightly whiter teeth.

It all looks distorted? And just odd. It’s not an improvement so it stands out and all you can see is that someone looks a bit strange or made themselves look older. And paid for it!

Colourfulduvets · 03/11/2024 14:05

Ok, will no doubt go down in a load of flames for this but the idea that we can't ever discuss or point out the problems with things like this without being accused of all sorts is part of the problem.
It's obviously not a good idea to shave down your teeth to stubs or even just "rough them up a bit" so you can have things stuck on them in the name of vanity.
Not is it good to inject all manner of chemicals into your lips, your face, your body or whatever for the same reason.

None of it is a good idea and it's actually dangerous in many cases, particularly when done on the cheap.

Not talking about it for fear of upsetting people is just daft. It needs talking about the folly behind it needs pointing out.

Auburngal · 03/11/2024 14:05

People need to stop copying celebrities and be themselves. Natural beauty is nicer than plastic surgery and spiders eyelashes

Agreed, on the odd occasion I've had gel nails and they 'rough up' the surface of the nail a tiny bit first it absolutely trashes my nails and they aren't strong again until I've grown a whole new nail.....can't do that with teeth.....

mouldypumpkin · 03/11/2024 14:10

I think that in a way because it looks so obvious and like a facial deformity, it’s making me question who that person really is. Because you can’t see the real person behind it all, it’s just a fake facade. Like a factory mould. And it doesn’t make me interested in that person. At all.

Right or wrong, it’s how I feel.

Colourfulduvets · 03/11/2024 14:14

I am in late middle age now and I regret not using sun cream enough when I was younger, goodness knows what some young people will regret when they get to my age!
