Reading it now its horrific. People saying we heard screams- and yet did nothing??? How does a person just think that no im not going to report this, most likely because they cant be bothered/ dont want to be involved. Scum of the earth the dad is. The stepmother ( and her sister!) going on and on about how they feel bad etc and dont do anything!

So Olga leaves a young girl with a psychopath and doesn't think to ring the appropriate services? Rubbish. Plenty of people can translate Polish if necessary.

She did tell SS.
Also ' female social workers accused Sharif of being coercive and abusive towards them'

MN is full of threads started by women who have been forced by the family courts to allow contact/leave their children with violent, abusive ex partners. I guess a woman with learning difficulties and no support would not know how to begin a battle with a controlling, violent, abusive man.
But, of course, blame her, not him.

It always puzzles me how people don't see it.
Husband (police officer) says that lots of people live in their bubble and don't really understand until it happens to them.

Its incredible that a judge thought it would be a great idea to leave a child with a man who tried to set a woman on fire before.

I think THAT needs looking into.

It was said in court that the reason the mother lost residency was because she was abusing the children. The whole scenario is bizarre. Why would the state hand custody of the children to another abuser?

I doubt it was that straight forward.

Of course, and I'm terribly sorry the Mum has difficulties and can't speak English.
No family? No relatives? Nobody?

Lifeomars · 12/11/2024 18:29

i assume that after the inevitable guilty verdict and the hopefully very long jail sentences the whole truth about how that poor girl was let down at every stage of her life will be made fully public. This case and the all the other ones preceding this involving unspeakable cruelty meted out to children have made me sob. The pain and fear that she must have endured do not bear thinking about.

ElsaGreen · 12/12/2024 01:33

Have not read the thread yet, bookmarking to read. I have a young daughter and am filled with maternal rage for all the people, all the systems and agencies that let Sara down.

BourbonsAreOverated · 12/12/2024 10:19

I saw the daily mail at the petrol station today. Their headline
“let down by EVERYONE” in big letters.

her poor ex teachers. I don’t believe they let her down.

She was let down by the man who murdered her and the people that were in the house.

It’s very odd that everyone else is being blamed.

It’s not odd to blame people whose job it is to protect children from known violent men and who in this case not only failed to do so, but actively decided she should live with him.

She was let down by many people.

She was let down by those who gave custody to her father who had an abusive past. She was let down by social services who, despite his background and complaints by her school, closed her case. She was let down by neighbours who didn't alert authorities when they heard her being abused. She was let down by her family.

I myself am from a similar ethnic background, and you bet that in many from our community will just brush it off. It makes me angry that because its a child, they are allowed to be beaten

Perhaps they'll be less likely to brush it off now. Hopefully, anyway.

Nitgel · 12/12/2024 10:41

The system is broken. On Radio 4 they just mentioned Every Child Matters, the former Labour government brought in so many fantastic services that just got cut and cut by the tories.

BourbonsAreOverated · 12/12/2024 10:41

When she was taken out of school where social services had said to monitor her. They should have taken over the monitoring.
It’s clear why she was being home schooled and I bet those poor teachers hearts sank when she was taken out.

Lettherebejustice · 12/12/2024 10:56

From what I read, her teachers and the school did everything they were supposed to including reporting all concerns. I don't think it would be fair to say she was let down by them.

Anonymousess · 12/12/2024 11:03

She looks happier in the newly released photos of her at school… seems like she was able to have some fun and just be a child at school even though she was enduring all that at home.

I found a BBC article really sad - her teacher mentions seeing facial bruising once Sara starting wearing a hijab. The BBC added the widely shared photo of Sara in a hijab right next to the teacher’s comments. The discolouration the teacher saw is even slightly visible in the photo which has been widely shared.

hotpotlover · 12/12/2024 11:05

From my point of view the school did everything they could.

Reading the history of the case over the years, it seems like a major failure from children's services.

Nitgel · 12/12/2024 11:17

A>4998-DfES-ChildrenGPaperCOV this is worth reading at how things were set up to make sure these sort of cases didn't happen. even if you just read the first couple of pages.

Actually I’ve really changed my mind on this. This poor little child was hugely failed by the teachers who didn’t report the concerns officially - twice, on SS who didn’t take it seriously even though when this child was born she was put on a child protection register BECAUSE of her DAD & and the police got knowing he was an absolute monster and living with children.

And The absolute cheek that Starmer is blaming home education 😮

Home ed always gets blame.
No one really thinks why is that. Most home ed kids are already 'known' to LA, becase each time child is withdrawn from school, a notification is sent to LA. School decided not to notify SS again when S was taken off register, bc 'she looked well in the morning'.
Lots of people also confuse home ed kids with 'ghost kids' and also those with 'attendance issues'.
Three separate problems - ghost kids would be one of mine with EHCP, at home for 3 years, with no suitable school arranged by LA. He was not on any roll, not officially home ed, just vanished. LA knew of him as we fought them in tribunal for that time, but did anyone see him in 3 years or called to ask? Nope

NOTHING.EVER.CHANGES. I suffered appalling abuse in the 1960s but survived. Nobody did anything then and nobody does anything now.
My experience of school was teachers don't want to know. They can't be bothered with the extra safeguarding paperwork. If someone is dirty and doesn't speak nobody cares about them. I recall my teachers active dislike of me. There will be more and different Sarah's every day of every week.
