Women being nasty/body shaming other women

Autumnlovelove · 01/11/2024 14:37

Ive just seen an article in the Daily Mail with a headline intending to body shame.
It really angers me.
I know everyone says what do you expect from journalists especially something like the Daily Mail.
But seriously in this day and age with so much focus on being kind and issues surrounding peoples mental health you would think this horrible attitude would stop.

The article is about Lauren from Only way is Essex and is clearly written in a way for people to mock her. Its so nasty especially as Lauren has spoken up only recently about how low she feels.

The fact that its another woman doing this for some reason makes me feel even angrier.

Ive posted the article on here just to show how awful journalists are and hope that Journalists like this will eventually be called out and cancelled.

Why are you so at me? Do you work in media because you seem to know a lot about how it all works.

Because you're the one posting all the photos?

Who else would be commenting towards??

Knowing some basic stuff about how things work online doesn't mean I'm in media and what would it matter if I did?

MartinCrieffsLemon · 01/11/2024 15:17

Seeing these photos and going "must be bait" means at least some part of your brain went "she looks a mess and everyone will judge her"

Please leave me alone. You are taking this to a nasty level. We can have a discussion without trying to get at me.

DM do this all the time and it's so bloody obvious I'm surprised posters on here are responding so naively.

The headline is usually something along the lines of "X flaunts her fabulous curves" or "X can barely contain her assets" while using photos of women at unflattering angles/mid conversation/slumped over/face contorted etc.

It's a tactic used to bait people into engaging with their content. Bizarrely people will fall over themselves to point out that the women don't actually look attractive in the photos.

Those headlines directly call attention to the body type of the subject though

This one is about her smiling with her daughter on a trip out.

With a caption on SM, so not by the journo, that is a generic "looking good"

Amyknows · 01/11/2024 15:21

A women's worst enemy is another woman. The most judgmental opinions are from other women. Just like you have done op.

I wasn't judging her at all. Im actually supporting her and hate the fact that the press try to bring her down.

The DM does this all the time, come on. They post unflattering pics of celebs with the faux naivety of 'Looking good!' because they know people (idiots) will fall over themselves to comment on them, but they themselves can't possibly be accused of anything underhand because they've just written something nice and all that. It's part of their brand at this point.

More than one person has said comment this was relating to. I didn't tag or quote anyone.

I'm also not being nasty. You're now pulling a "I feel so attacked right now" because you've been told by multiple people you were wrong and you're also potentially causing problems for the journo contrary to your "be kind" belief

Why aren't you calling any other poster out? Stop attacking me...

Autumnlovelove · 01/11/2024 15:25

@MartinCrieffsLemon we can agree to disagree

It’s true that society pits women against each other, and that many of us have internalised that. But you’re being very judgmental of other women, considering you did it too. You read a comment saying she looked good (not by the journalist you’ve attempted to incite people to contacts btw) and didn’t even entertain the fact that it could be true. You judged her appearance so negatively, that you’re started an entire thread to discuss the fact that no one could possibly genuinely think she looks good!

loropianalover · 01/11/2024 15:28

Autumnlovelove · 01/11/2024 15:09

@loropianalover it wasnt all men.

The image you shared to prove your point was of 3 men, that’s what I based my reply on…?

Are you the journo looking for traffic to her article??? (I’m not being serious before you suggest I’m attacking you and should leave you alone after you started a thread).

narns · 01/11/2024 15:32

@MartinCrieffsLemon and yet they haven't chosen a single photo of her smiling in the article have they?

There isn't a flattering image of her on there and Lauren is a beautiful girl, I'm sure they wouldn't struggle to find/take one.

The article also refers to her posing in lingerie etc for her only fans page. Let's not pretend that this article won't prompt comments about her body.

That wasnt my intention.
I do not know how the media works. If i see a name on the article then the assumption is made that the person who wrote the article has also chosen the photos and tone of the headline. I wouldn't put my name to an article that i haven't seen before print.

I don't want to get into a whole debate about whether Lauren looks good or not. It's the way that the article is being presented and its intention which is what i have an issue with.

Autumnlovelove · 01/11/2024 15:35

@loropianalover earlier in the thread i had posted a snapshot of what women had said as well.

I wasnt looking tbh at whether the comments were made by men or women just at the comments themselves.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 01/11/2024 15:38

Women's physical appearance has been policed harshly for as long as there's been a patriarchy.

In the media, it got worse from the 1970s on, 'coincidentally' at the same time as feminism was making major strides for women in the white collar workplace, in birth control, etc.

To think that the Daily Mail is alone in doing this is frankly totally divorced from reality.

The most vicious policers of women's bodies are young straight men, gay men of all ages, and the absolute worst, women themselves.

Attelina · 01/11/2024 15:39

Lauren sells her stories to the Daily Mail, Any sad face she pulls is all carefully played out for the camera. She started off being famous for being on the tv show and the drama with her love life, then she progressed to the weight loss photos and then the weight gain photos posing in dreadful outfits all aimed at clickbait foe the daily Mail readers.

Of course it was terrible that her daughter said and her sorrow is obviously genuine surrounding that but everything else is paid for drama, rows with boyfriends, falling out with friends and too tight outfits as they all reap in financial rewards for her

Lauren is in no way a victim and is very well paid for her photos and stories. She doesn't care that some call her fat or laugh at her bum squashed into a pair of leggings three sizes too small as it's the £'a she receives that buys her home, furnishings, make up and clothes etc.

It pays for her to stay the size she is because the Daily Mail will pay for the ridiculous looking photos of big lips and big bums more than when she was younger, slim and naturally pretty.

Sugarysugar · 01/11/2024 15:40

Well I agree that this is a none story purposely published to include very unflattering photos of some woman going about the business of parenting her child.
Tbh I haven't a clue who she is but I think for a start it's an invasion of her privacy to have this article and photos published at all. What good does it serve? What is the point of it if not to set her up for judgement ?
And I think pp who are really saying she is not going to be judged by a lot of people who buy this rag are either being totally naive or being disingenuous.

CreationNat1on · 01/11/2024 15:40

Yes, men are not photographed like this, it's an absolute invasion of that woman's privacy and that of her daughter too.

Attelina · 01/11/2024 15:42

CreationNat1on · 01/11/2024 15:40

That's completely laughable. She warns her living from arranging these photographs to be taken. You have no idea how it works!

Honestly it’s confusing, and why I believe that media literacy should be taught in school. For what’s its worth, the tagline will have been added before the article was posted to website by which point the journalist will have already submitted the final article. She’ll have absolutely no say (and possibly won’t even see) the click bait link the social media team use to promote it.

But you still blamed ‘women’ despite the fact in the screenshots you shared, the only negative comments came from men. The women said positive things. Maybe consider why you were so quick to assume it was women who were being awful? You’ve judged women just as negatively as you’re claiming the last who wrote the article did.

vegaspot · 01/11/2024 15:45

I agree with @Autumnlovelove and people are being obtuse . The DM regularly put up an unflattering picture ,to get the thick male readers to make misogynistic comments ..it happens on a very regular basis !

Autumnlovelove · 01/11/2024 15:46

@DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby because a woman wrote the article

I'm with you OP. I'm not sure if other posters really haven't seen this sort of thing or if they're just being disingenuous. It's a very well known ploy. Post an unflattering picture with a faux supportive headline. And watch the bitchy comments come in

Cornflakelover · 01/11/2024 15:47

I agree with you OP
it actually came up on my FB page earlier and the comments were all horrible about how she looked and how much weight she has put on

they have posted unflattering photos of a person just going about her day “ saying looking good “ when there is no need to put that at all

the lookinn good was done ( imo ) to incite people to say horrrible stuff about a women just going about her day

although if you put yourself in the public eye and most of what your doing is based on a particular image you portray and filter your photos then people will comment when they see the real person.
