To be fed up of the political manipulation on mumsnet

ZenNudist · 31/10/2024 14:00

It's incessant and it's wearing. It's been going on for years and I'm fed up of the massive amount of tory party generated and lobbying content blocking up mumsnet.

I appreciate mumsnet is seen as a key voter demographic but a lot of the threads being posted are so transparently fiction.

The billion VAT on school fees threads must have been a mix of real people and tory HQ.

Fake outrage started immediately and now well into saying that with less than 4 Months of government and before enacting their first budget the Labour Party are apparently making a mess of everything and reversing the great gains made during tory rule. What great gains? I don't know. I saw one post trying to take tory credit for reducing inflation like that was Rishi's doing, laughable.

I also have seen a few fake scenarios for adverse impact of the budget on inheritance and small business taxation. Speaking as someone who will be adversely affects by increasing employer NI and the reduction in business property relief I still support these changes. My friends who are small business owners feel the same way.

Labour promised not to put up the main rates of income tax and employee NI. They were clear that measures would need to be taken to increase the tax take. They still are trying to drive growth because at the end if the day increasing the tax base is the best way of increasing revenue to the exchequer.

I know a lot of mumsnetters say they can't spot trolls or AI threads. I also think a lot of people will not spot the blatant manipulation by lobbyists and tory campaigners.

Tory party now playing a long game.

The Tory party is funded by the rich for the benefit of the rich. The rest of the middle, the poor, the marginalised have almost no voice and no one funding a political machine to work in our favour.

Of course people can readily ascertain a poster's political poster!

username7891 · 31/10/2024 14:14

It's pretty relentless and some sub forums seem to have been completely captured. MN seems to have moved pretty far to the right in some instances. Either that or it's a very vocal minority.

hattie43 · 31/10/2024 14:19

I'm fed up with how the left can't have a debate without resorting to personal attack and insult throwing .

Icanttakethisanymore · 31/10/2024 14:20

Is it political manipulation or just people expressing their views? I might not agree with them, FWIW, but I'm not sure what problem you are trying to solve? I speak to plenty of people IRL who spout the same tired lines about the Tories and Labour as people on here, I wouldn't call it political manipulation, they just have different views to me.

Dotjones · 31/10/2024 14:20

Well if you weigh up all the right wing stuff against all the left wing stuff that's on here, I guess it's kind of a balanced debate.

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 31/10/2024 14:22

In my opinion the tory party and Labour party are both bad but in different ways

Petrine · 31/10/2024 14:23

People have differing views on many issues, politics being just one of them. You have to accept that fact and allow free discussion.

OrangeGreens · 31/10/2024 14:28

I’m bored too of all the apocalyptic predictions on here about this very bland government. I didn’t and wouldn’t vote Labour by the way!

However I think while some anti-Labour posts are Tory marketing, most are probably authentic. You and I just notice them more than we did the anti-Tory posts, because we were more liable to agree with the anti-Tory posts.

If you look at the comments on almost any post about immigration, taxes, benefits, charging for basic public services etc you will see that there are plenty of right-wing posters on here - lots of them very far to the right.

Lincoln24 · 31/10/2024 14:30

It's well known that certain groups and even governments spend vast sums on online influencing. It's not always going to be AI bots you can spot a mile off. It's absolutely endemic online. It's naive to think it wouldn't happen on Mumsnet too.

Ironically loads of posts about pretty insignificant issues get accused of being AI generated but I think the more political the post the more likely it is to be a fake poster.

It cracks me up that I’ve often seen posters complain that Mn is a stronghold of handwringing left-leaning liberals. It’s absolutely not now, if it ever was. I’d characterise it as right-of-centre political illiteracy with frequent moments of Thatcherism-lite.

CoralReader · 31/10/2024 14:31

It’s not my fault you don’t agree with other peoples views. Go live in communist china

twistyizzy · 31/10/2024 14:32

I'm sick of anyone daring to critcise Labour is automatically a Tory bot.

Ambienteamber · 31/10/2024 14:32

I agree.
I do not believe there is really this amount of business owners and farmers on mumsnet who suddenly stand to lose millions in tax due to inheritance... or businesses who are at risk of collapsing because of hikes to minimum wage..
Maybe a few. But since the budget was announced there's been hundreds of these threads. I do not think they are all real people.

Your edit suggests you’re quite confused, @CoralReader.😀

What have I just read?

Labour have performed terribly - it is supposed to be a honeymoon period and it’s been anything but! They stripped pensioners first, they lost Sue Gray - their Chief of Staff within weeks, one of their MPs was filmed repeatedly punching a prone and defenceless man on the floor - and has now been charged with assault.

The private school is an own goal and likely to create even more pressure in the state system, and will cost money not generate income! We have seen a doom loop of bad news from Labour HQ resulting in a slowing down of the economy as people lack confidence. The budget was a disaster for business - many of whom are struggling already. To add to this shambles we have had riots and Starmer did nothing to address the issues at all. I see no leadership or master plan of any kind.

Yes I can see why pp are totally pissed off!!

All the Labour supporters are equally as upset as it’s just dawned on them nothing is going to change!

We wouldn’t have a massive black hole in the first place had they not caved in to union demands for millions to have a pay rise.

And your answer is that it must be Tory bots 🙄 Seriously!

Oh yes some of the posts from very niche groups of people affected by policy changes certainly do ring alarm bells! There was one about a GP practice being forced to close today/yesterday that felt off to me… 🤔

Sausagenbacon · 31/10/2024 14:43

I think you're deluded if you believe it's only coming from the Right.

GasPanic · 31/10/2024 14:43

So your are fed up of political manipulation on mumsnet.

Then make a post supporting Labour.

OK.

sharpclawedkitten · 31/10/2024 14:45

My feeling is that the Tories are male and Labour are female.

That is, Labour seem to have to be 100 times better than the Tories to be considered just the same. The Tories really need to mess up before they get criticised.

And it's the same in workplaces, women often need to perform better than the equivalent man to be recognised.

Unbelooth · 31/10/2024 14:47

Opinions I don't agree with = "political manipulation"

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay...

sharpclawedkitten · 31/10/2024 14:47

We wouldn’t have a massive black hole in the first place had they not caved in to union demands for millions to have a pay rise

Simply not true. There is also a black hole due to covid.

They didn't strip pensioners, they made a benefit means-tested.

And one of the reasons for the black hole (other than Brexit which could have been avoided very easily) is the fact that they need billions to compensate those affected by the Post Office and infected blood scandals. What I would like to see is an action plan to make sure companies and the government cannot mess up like that again!

HunsandRoses · 31/10/2024 14:47

What a patronising thread 😡

It's like patting us little women on the head saying we couldn't possibly have our own thoughts or disagree with political views (unless we're Labour supporters of course 🙄) It must be the work of big bad AI manipulation.

You don't get to police the views of others or diminish the voices of others with conspiracy theories because you don't agree.

How can you possibly say that after the relentless attacks on Boris Jonson and others. It beggars belief. The conservatives were undermined at every turn.

GimmeHRT · 31/10/2024 14:48

Reading some comments on various chats I would not be surprised if political parties have ‘people’ to create threads or comment on threads.

Both Tory and Labour have faults and neither are behaving particularly well.

Did you not realise that women and BAME people must all vote Labour?

Wasn't it Jeremy Corbyn who said "Only Labour can be trusted to unlock the talent of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people." 🙄
