Nose piercing

TheWorstWeek · 28/10/2024 17:20

Is it daft of me, as a 35 year old mum of two, to want a nose piercing? I think dainty little nose rings look really lovely - on other people at least! Am I too old to be thinking of getting my first piercing since I did my ear lobes when I was 12?
Also, right or left nostril?

Nah, just that quite a lot of us don't have partners who need to approve what we do with our bodies. Mine may not like everything I do, but thankfully our relationship is a tad more than how I look.

Of course it's attractive TO YOU.
Other opinions do exist you know.
Just because you like it doesn't mean to say every one does.
It's actually quite a marmite thing: either people really like it or they really dislike it. I obviously find it extremely distasteful.
I acknowledge your right to think otherwise. But it's apparent from pp on this thread they don't accord other people the right to deviate from their viewpoint.

You have the right to your view, others have the right to challenge it, as you have done to the OP...

Allinadayswork80 · 28/10/2024 20:10

Go for it OP! Life is too short, you regret the things you don’t do. I had mine done in my late 20’s and still love it at 44. Sometimes I wear a ring, sometimes a stud.

Cotswoldmama · 28/10/2024 20:19

I turned 40 this year and I just got mine done a couple of months ago, ive just changed it to a ring and I love it! I think they're attractive, not that it matters. I've been on a bit of a piercing spree recently and in the last 2 years I've got a daith, conch, and 3rds and 4ths of each ear and my belly button pierced!

Well yes they have the right to challenge me.
But pp are using phrases such as " wide eyed" and " faux innocence" to criticise me. And I have no idea what they mean, what they are talking about. I have asked them to explain what they mean but they have failed to do so. So I don't know what the basis of their challenge is. If they explained what they are talking about I could answer their challenge. Heavens I might even agree with them.
As it is they cone over as outraged just because I've voiced a personal opinion that doesn't fit in with their own narrative about piercings and tattoos. Why can't they explain what they mean?

Alwayssomethingtheretoremindme · 28/10/2024 17:58

Because I celebrate the beauty of the human body in its natural state.
Piercings and tattoos are not natural. They also gave an unpleasant association with pain and suffering.
If that's what you are in to fair enough but I reserve my right to find piercings and tattoos unattractive and actually repugnant.
But I'm civilised enough to try to not let my feelings affect my behaviour towards those who feel differently.

Christ on a bike, you need to get out a bit more.

Well my goodness here's another one who has nothing to say but a dismissive meaningless put down !
Why don't you actually give a meaningful critique of what I said instead of just a snide remark?

TheWorstWeek · 28/10/2024 20:38

@Toffeeeapple that okay. I actually really like "sleeves, chest pieces, mandalas, and other weird things" so I think they are more likely to be my sort of people.

I don't remember asking for opinions on whether or not others like piercings. I'm aware they can be quite divisive. I like them. It was more of I was daft to do it after not having piercings for years - and which nostril to get it in.

To be honest, it was meant as a very light-hearted post because at the end of the day I dont actually care if anyone, including my husband (shock horror!) LIKES nose piercings. I do.

Crazy how we're talking about things that the op has expressed interest in on ops thread. Wow. Who'd a thunk

Well you actually asked if it was daft to get a nose piercing
That to my mind is asking for opinions on nose piercings.
And on that basis I talked about disliking nose piercings although admittedly expanded it to include piercings in general and tattoos.
But yes if you ask the question is it daft to get piercing you are inviting people to give a view point on piercings.

I actually only used faux innocence to explain the wide eyed thing to you. So it was merely a definition.

Also you know full well she was asking for an opinion on getting it done at her age, not an opinion in general, thats why you've been accused of wide eyed innocence when you pretend that's not the case.

I didn't actually relate the question to her age.
I related it to nose piercings.
I've seen a lot of people with piercings and a variety of ages.
In my opinion they are equally unpleasant whatever the age.
I'm always taken aback as to how ageist a lot of posters on MN are.
Personally I treat people as individuals. I don't look at people and what they wear, how they present themselves etc and judge whether it's appropriate for whatever age they might be.

ObliviousCoalmine · 28/10/2024 21:38

@Nikitaspearlearring yes I absolutely did; the post was met with the same energy it was giving out 😊

Nightshiftlightweight · 28/10/2024 21:48

I say do it, but if you are unsure you can get fake nose rings and sticky stud effect ones really cheap on eBay. Try those first and if you like the way it looks, do it.
It doesn’t even hurt and heals quickly, definitely quicker than a cartilage piercing in your ears.

Alwayssomethingtheretoremindme · 28/10/2024 22:01

No doubt I'll get total abuse for asking this but if you have a nose piercing how does that work when you have a cold?
It's bad enough and sore enough having to blow your nose without having studs and rings and whatever in it. I can't imagine how horrible and sore it must be with them in place.

It's only sore for the first few weeks after piercing, can't feel it after that

I forget it's there. Its never got sore. It's just another part of my nose.

I clean mine as I wash my face at night

TheWorldisGoingMad · 28/10/2024 22:35

Before you make the decision to have a permanent piercing, get a clip on nose ring and try it in different places on each nostril.

If you decide you like the clip on enough to make it permanent, make sure you get a proper peircer to do the job with a needle NOT a gun, which leaves a permanent visible hole.

As an ND person I can't look at a piercing without fixating on it. I find it distracts me away from the whole face. 🙈 I have to look at the floor.

You ha e to satisfy yourself. There are big rings and dainty rings. As long as you don't have a young child who can grab at it.

Brianmaysmagicfingers · 28/10/2024 22:41

I got mine done when I turned 40! I’ve just had it swapped to a tiny ring. I love it. My parents hate it.… 😆

murasaki · 28/10/2024 22:50

I have an amethyst stud in mine at the moment, I think it looks pretty. And that's all that matters.

murasaki · 28/10/2024 22:54

In fact DP bought my latest stud, having made sure it was titanium due to my allergies, so I can only assume he likes it or doesn't care. The piercing predates him, and if necessary will outlast him. You go for it, OP, but as said, make sure you get it done with a needle and try a fake ring clip on to decide which side.

TeabySea · 28/10/2024 23:06

I'm in my mid-fities and got.mine done last year. Unfortunately I had some issues with healing and had to take it out, but seriously considering trying again next year.
