Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

honestly, I really don't know where I said that people can't choose them. I just said putting them in a family supermarket is something I don't agree with.

And penis or whatever, it's a tool for stimulation. So ridiculous to fix on the odd word and try to make that into the argument. It's a detraction from the point. Which is that I think it's wrong to normalise artificial stimulation rather than letting adults choose that if/when they want. In Tesco where kids and young teens can see it does give it a kind of endorsement.

But adults can choose a vibrator if and when they want it. Just because it’s available in Tesco doesn’t mean someone will be forced to buy it. And if they do buy one - what’s the worst that could happen? They have a good orgasm?

I really don't know how to make this plainer, in English:

I am not saying anyone can't buy a vibrator (including my family members - that's their business). BUT I don't like them being present on a shelf where kids and young teens can see them.

I’ve said this before too. In 14 years of parenting 4 children, not one of my kids has seen a vibrator on a shelf in a supermarket. It’s not the problem you’re making it out to be. If they had seen them and asked questions, I’d have explained they are for adults and moved on. It really is as simple as that.

You have to stop insinuating posters are paedophiles. It’s not fucking on.

Warz · 27/10/2024 22:19

Wtf are you talking about?

I see MartinCrieffsLemon independant fanclub is back.

The only reason to find it creepy is to think I'm encouraging CSA. Which I've been clear is not the case. You are unable to explain why else it's creepy.

Because you keep mentioning how other people think it's "creepy" so I'm saying others must agree with me

I can't really defend myself against multiple people going for me because I dared to give my opinion that vibrators shouldn't be sold in Tesco. That was the question in the post. And I said 'women' too because apart from the prevalent MN view that they are wonderful tools of female emancipation and being in control of their own sexual pleasure, they can also be used by a partner in a way which degrades a woman. Or, even, a woman can feel she 'ought' to like them and that if she doesn't, she's somehow uptight/repressed (which is rubbish).

So, attack away, as is usual on here. I personally prefer a flesh and blood male body. And don't bother now 'educating' me that vibrators can be part of a perfect array of sexual options between man/woman (man/man, woman/woman, whoever/whoever), because of course I know that. Just not my choice, and I think it's wrong to put objects designed for sexual pleasure on show in a family supermarket.

Condoms are different because although going on a penis, they are for protection and contraception for the most part.

Condoms are for protection and contraception, you’re right.

For when people are fucking for pleasure.

Why do you think children shouldn't be exposed to "exposed to adult sexual behaviour in any context"? Proper sexual education is an important tool for tackling sexual abuse....?

Oh, I see....creepy.

(If it's beyond you, I'm making the point that grossly misrepresenting what somebody is saying, to imply they're some sort of predator, is appalling and dishonest behavior).

Explain why it's creepy then, if it's not because you're implying pedophilia?

Warz · 27/10/2024 22:27

Nope. You can agree with that poster if you like, but you don't get to tell me what my narrative is. There's a LONG road between creepy comments and pedophilia, ffs.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 22:28

Then explain why it’s ‘creepy’.

You know full well what you’re insinuating. We can all see it.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/10/2024 22:32

As someone who has regularly been accused of being a pearl clutcher on here, I can't understand the fuss. They can be walked past in a second. It's not as though they are at the checkout with the Percy Pigs, inviting comment. I'm sure many parents have giggled with their DC at gaudy, painted phallic objects in every little Greek Market.

The children on scooters in the supermarket offend me more. A shop can sell things, a customer doesn't have to buy everything they see.

The under 8's won't notice, the 9-12's can be swerved to another aisle, the 13+'s, should be told the facts and brought up to understand sex is to be enjoyed between consenting adults and it is not shameful.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 22:32

Warz · 27/10/2024 22:30

And?

Again, you're using my deleted post as an argument so I'm just pointing out it's the same

I do DM’s internet shopping for her, usually sat next to her.

Recently, she wanted some Teasers (like Maltesers, but chunkier). Anyway, I couldn’t find them under Maltesers, so I searched for Teasers, and this, I shit you not, was what came up.

Not awkward. At. All.

Especially if she said ‘The one on the left will do, dear. Do I get clubcard points on that?” Grin

Ask one of the other posters who also identified that posters comments as creepy? Maybe they can shed some light on it for you?

I’m asking you. Because you’ve said it repeatedly. You can’t give an explanation because you know what the implications are of your accusation.

Reserved101 · 27/10/2024 22:35

SwingTheMonkey · 27/10/2024 22:31

Yup. I'm also on the receiving end of "I see the poster who seems to understand you extremely well, yes. We can all see them."

And again, that's despite me making repeatedly clear that I don't think sex toys should be in supermarkets. I am not on the same side of this argument as @MartinCrieffsLemon but what Warz is doing is disgusting.

BalletCat · 27/10/2024 22:35

Member869894 · 27/10/2024 22:11

Parents generally have control over when and how to discuss topics like sex and having sex toys on prominent display in what should be neutral public space undermines that

That is a ridiculously naive opinion

In your opinion. I agree with her. External triggers for a conversation topic removed the power to bring it up in your own time.
