The Labour Party are bloody hypocrites

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:13

I think Angela rayner has got a nerve to start slashing the right to buy when she has profited from it, is she going to give the money back then that she pocketed from this scheme when she sold her house? I have always been a labour supporter and I am as working class as they come but I am so angry about this. I am not denying that the right to buy policy has its issues but it's just tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis and ignoring the real issues. I may be slightly emotional about this as I live in a one bedroomed council flat that I was planning on buying next year, my only hope of probably ever owning a property. Instead, if and when I choose to have children and I am overcrowded, they will now have to rehouse me themselves instead to a bigger property and I will now probably be a lifelong council tenant. Fabulous. Why are they targeting the people at the bottom? I can't support them anymore sadly.

What you have written is defamation.

https://fullfact.org/online/naz-shah-diversity-quote-tweet/

In 2020, Ms Shah successfully sued the campaigning group Leave.EU after it called her a “grooming gang apologist” in a 2019 Facebook post. The group apologised and accepted Ms Shah was a "vociferous campaigner for victims of grooming gangs", said their post was “ill-judged and untrue” and paid her damages for libel.

She told the Yorkshire Post at that time: “I refuse to be defined by a tweet, that was up for eight minutes, that was rectified.”

You can choose to believe she liked a tweet and then reposted it as an ‘accident’ - I don’t.

She was also suspended from Labour for antisemitic remarks.

Like I said above MPs behaviour on Twitter is unprofessional & appalling. And is a huge driver in the separatism we are seeing in society.

They should be banned from using it.

And that is fine. Stating she tweeted those words herself isn't.

Agree about MPs and Twitter though!

Like many other people, why not you?

how does a single woman, with no children, on £30,000 even qualify for council housing? Families are being (if they're 'lucky' ) housed in shared housing.

let alone RTB ay 50%???

Exactly...after splitting with my ex, I'm on 23,500 pa with three kids and privately renting a one bedroom as I don't qualify for benefits or social housing. 30k for one person is more than decent!

Which MPs were involved in the cover up?

There is no evidence. You always know when you’re told to go and Google it.

She might not like it being repeated, but it is not defamation to state a fact. And the fact is she tweeted, and that is what I have posted.

Ouch!

Hypocritical, devious Labour

After signing the petition against the Labour Party’s disgraceful and devious decision to stop the Winter Fuel Allowance for millions of pensioners, I wanted to let you know about the actions I have taken over the last month or so.

I have informed my local Labour MP Ruth Jones that, after listening to the excuses trying to defend this outrageous and wicked decision, I will never again vote for Labour.

I first voted for Labour in 1979, and have been a member of the party alongside my father for a number of years, attending meetings, plus actually helping Neil and Glenys Kinnock in his bid to win the 1992 election. I am absolutely gobsmacked at the arrogance and contempt which Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and Liz Kendall seem to be showing for the people who voted for the party in July.

Clearly it is defamation. That’s why she won her libel case.

Barbadossunset · 28/10/2024 09:32

But when you die then the house is free again.

I don’t think that’s always the case. In our village the resident of a council house died and it has been sold by the council. It’s quite compact, a small sitting room & bedroom and galley kitchen so not suitable for a family, but nonetheless I’m sure there are plenty of single people or couples without children who need it.
I don’t know why it’s been sold - maybe it needs a lot spending on it.

She did that. She admitted to it.

Yes. But she did not write the tweet, which is what pp said (or cover up for abusers, which pp implied).

bloody hell. I'm astounded you don't qualify for UC with housing element.

The same as those who didn't get a council property?

I don't know why you've responded to my comment in a shitty way, as that's exactly my point.

I'm talking about everyone in the rented sector, both private and social.

Surely it's an issue and a bit of a time bomb. Millennials and generations afterwards are disproportionately facing living and raising families in rented accommodation. I'm just saying there are several benefits to consider if RTB is done right. The alternative is surely that millions of people across the countries in the next few decades will be elderly pensioners needing to rent forever, with no prospect of not having housing costs. So that will still be a significant cost to councils.

Panama2 · 28/10/2024 09:58

Apologies if already said but you are amazingly lucky to have a council property in the first instance. If you can only afford to buy at a heavily discounted price then it would be very difficult for you to purchase a property at market value and it would also be quite difficult to resell an ex council property unless in a very desirable expensive and desirable area.

No they are not difficult to resell. The estate I grew up on a purpose made LA housing - in fact it was the over spill from Ancoats in Manchester. They were bought in the right to buy and are now going for £250,000 which is bonkers as it was very poor when I was little. These are just 3 bed council houses.

She still liked and reposted it. Thats the same as an endorsement. When you like and repost a tweet from your own account you might have well as wrote it.

Stop justifying it, its pathetic.

And regarding the covering for the abusers there is a lot of evidence such files warning about the activities of paedophile rings were stolen from a locked council office in Rotherham and the Home Office was urged to do an investigation. The report from Prof Alexis Jay in 2014 about the cover up is shocking and i suggest you read it, it found that the Home office knew as far back as 2002 what was happening. But they wanted to keep the seats in those areas and kept quiet about it.

It blows my mind people still refuse to accept it

I am not justifying the tweet itself at all. It was a reprehensible tweet, parody or not and Shah was wrong to retweet it. But it does seem that she made a mistake.

Which MPs were involved in the cover up of Rotherham? There were terrible failings and those girls were absolutely let down by all authorities involved, no doubt about that, but I don't think any MPs were involved in a cover up? Happy to see evidence that they were, though.

There’s an estate of former council houses where I live that are all in private ownership now. They’re all well built, solid semis on huge plots and they sell the minute they hit the market on the very rare occasion that happens.

MikeRafone · 28/10/2024 11:19

or you could buy the council property and then on meeting someone move out and rent the council property out as a landlord charging twice the rent that the council does - and that is what has been happening.

So a council property that rents for £560 a month will rent on the private market at £1000 - which is what is happening across the country

so the [person then renting your property will never have a chance to buy it - as its private rental and they also get to pay way more rent each month

The Jay report was highly critical of Rotherham Council and the police. As far as I can see MPs weren’t even mentioned.

But to recap -

"Girls were "left at the mercy" of paedophile grooming gangs for years because of failings by senior police and council bosses, a report has said.
The review covers 2004 to 2013, external and sets out a series of failed investigations by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
It also highlights the apparent local authority indifference to the plight of hundreds of youngsters identified as potential victims of Asian men.
GMP has apologised and said such cases were handled very differently now.
The report also identifies 96 men still deemed a potential risk to children, adding that this was "only a proportion" of the numbers involved in the abuse.
Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has since called for disciplinary action to be taken against police officers and council officials who "failed in their duties" as well as some prosecutors in the North West.
He also praised whistleblowers, including health worker Sara Rowbotham and former GMP detective Maggie Oliver, who raised concerns despite facing vocal criticism from authorities.
In 2007, Ms Rowbotham and her team had alerted GMP and Rochdale Council about a gang of men of Pakistani and Afghan heritage engaged in child sexual exploitation (CSE) while Ms Oliver resigned from GMP in 2012 to publicly reveal the extent of the police failings"

Are you telling me that the police knew, the council knew BUT the Labour MPs who served that council - had no idea. Lol.

I seriously doubt it - especially with Naz Shah conduct around it.

But you do know it don't you, you just dont care about it. I see you

Very well said Showme.

Disgusting that some remain in denial.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/10/2024 12:10

It's my understanding that council house residents have secure tenure for life, so it isn't as if they are going to get kicked out if they don't buy

This is generally true, @MrsBennetsPoorNerves, but it's very noticeable that some on the waiting lists who are loudest in insisting "there should be more housing" are the first to grab the opportunity once they're in and there's money to be made

Ask how this can be justified and the best you'll get is "Well you have to look after yourself", which funnily enough is exactly what they used to blast others for before their own opportunity arose
