To think all these weight loss jabs are a bad move?

I’ve seen so many people recently saying they’re on Mounjaro - someone wrote on Facebook that they were struggling to eat anything at all, hadn't eaten for over 48 hours. Just zero desire to eat anything. Surely that can’t be healthy?

I also know of someone who has lied to an only e pharmacy to get the jab, because her BMI would be considered too low to be prescribed it. She’s wanting to get down to a size 6.

@I8toys then that's on the manufacturer. Nothing to do with the weight loss injections as there's no shortage of pens amongst the weight loss jab manufacturers

True but one is life saving medication not just life changing. Hopefully it will all be sorted out soon and it dies down.

Then do a little more research before you castigate those who have and then think a little more.🤷‍♀️

Who was I castigating?

itwasnevermine · 23/10/2024 12:14

@I8toys this medication is life saving too.

DH is diabetic and I was furious when his doctor tried to prescribe Ozempic but couldn't because so many people were taking it for weight loss that there wasn't any available for people who medically needed it.

Truly. Fucking. Selfish.

This is bullshit. Nobody has been taking ozempic for weight loss in the UK for over a year. Wegovy was licenced in autumn 2023 and Mounjaro in early 2024. You can't even get ozempic for weight loss any more if you try!

SilenceInside · 23/10/2024 12:15

@I8toys the pens used for weight loss are not the same pens as those for insulin. They come as a unit and aren't interchangeable. Any shortage of insulin pens is nothing to do with people using weight loss injections.

Minimising the side effects, some of which are life changing, doesn't really help in having a balanced debate.

I knew someone would say that. Its completely different. Its not even in the same universe. Yes losing weight is life changing but I can't even comprehend how if you miss one insulin dose how ill you will be.

Freydo · 23/10/2024 12:17

Why do people who know fuck all think they know better than people who actually use these drugs and find them beneficial? 🙄

SilenceInside · 23/10/2024 12:18

@I8toys the issue with getting an insulin pen is nothing to do with the popularity of weight loss injections. It's a misapprehension to think that it is.

This is what the pharmacists have said - the shortage is due to weight loss jabs. No clue if its true but that's what my dad was told.

Hiya. I don't know though. Say a person lost weight the way everyone generally does - by changing what they put into their body and how they use their body - they are then a lower weight - maintaining that will be easier because they got there the right way yes?

Mind you you could say that about vaping - it's a substitute that doesn't really address the core issue.

I do take your point. But in life I have found generally that there are no quick ways to anywhere worth going. There's no such thing as a free lunch, as it were.

You dont seem to know how these medications work do you?

Did you not ask why insulin was short due to weight loss jabs? I mean that’s like saying insulin is short as too many people take nurofen.Confused

itwasnevermine · 23/10/2024 12:07

No, because insulin and weight loss jabs are two different things.

I do know of diabetics being moved on to different pens actually. A lot of the manufacturers are the same as those that make insulin. My friend was on disposable insulin pens but has been moved onto a cartridge smart pen and was told by her consultant it was due to the increase demand due to the weight loss jabs. A family member experienced similar. However both say they prefer the smart pens which records their doses so are quite happy about it

Its the pen used to administer it not the medication.

itwasnevermine · 23/10/2024 12:21

@I8toys probably as ill as I would have been had I stayed at 26 stone to be honest.

SilenceInside · 23/10/2024 12:21

Then the pharmacists are misinformed. It's just not true.

www.diabetes.org.uk/about-us/news-and-views/what-you-need-know-about-insulin-supply-issues-uk

Nothing to do with weight loss injections otherwise they would say here. It's a manufacturing issue from the manufacturer.

Thank you. You explained it better than me. Its causing my elderly dad a bit of anxiety and he's been on it all as a 3 times a day insulin user - pods, injections everything. I hope they sort it out soon.

SilenceInside · 23/10/2024 12:23

Also, it's Novo Nordisk who make the insulin pens that have been in shortage. It's Eli Lilly who make the Mounjaro pens. So not even the same company.

As someone who is obese (BMI says so I wouldn't say I was obese, I'm definitely over weight though maybe I carry it well 🤣)

I think you've got to think about the long term risk of being over weight and compare that to the risk from the medication.

For me, my weight will largely be a bigger risk to my overall health but I haven't time or energy for those kind of side effects. I need to be fit and well for a demanding physical job.

I do over eat. I eat the wrong things. I am moderately active day to day and exercise as well. I know what I need to do to lose weight and I'd rather do that slowly than get a quick fix medication. I've tried all kinds over the years and it always goes back on because it's the habits and lifestyle that needs to change long term.

This is 100% the right attitude.

The fact you accept you over-eat, are taking accountability for being over-weight, and have the determination to do something about it will make you a stronger person. The characteristics of a successful person!

I can't help feeling these injections are a substitute for accountability and effort. Most people are obese because they eat too much and exercise too little.

itwasnevermine · 23/10/2024 12:21

I'm not arguing with you but its not the same at all.

itwasnevermine · 23/10/2024 12:24

@TwinklyAmberOrca

I was 26 stone, I lost a huge chunk of that through "hard work"

Then decided I shouldn't have to suffer the crippling mental health consequences of that, and decided I'd start the jabs. Who cares as long as it comes off?

Summerbay23 · 23/10/2024 12:25

YABU
You have no idea how people have struggled with weight loss, serious associated health conditions, having tried all manner of weight loss routes over many many years. Quite honestly if I could be prescribed something to support my weight loss and get rid of my many associated health problems (that are a risk to my life) then I would take the injections in a heartbeat.

The problem is people who use them inappropriately not the people who have a genuine need.

SilenceInside · 23/10/2024 12:26

They're not the same pens, they're not interchangeable. The ones for insulin are just used for that. The ones for Mounjaro and Wegovy are just used for that. You can't swap and change the medication in them. An increase in the production of one doesn't have any impact on the other.m

The shortage of the insulin pens was caused by a problem the manufacturer had, not anything to do with any other medication.

Consultants and pharmacists are just as able to get the wrong end of the stick as other people. None of them should be alarming customers by talking inaccurately about things that they have a misapprehension about.

Unfortunately no parent can control all the influences on their children.

Nice attitude though.

Seriously, you actually think people who are taking a legal, safe, privately prescribed life changing medication should support banning the medication because some teenagers might abuse it? Are you ok?
