@Bagpuss83 "The other, you have used a tool to get you some way to the answer - albeit not all the way there. That's a better method than just guessing."

Ah. No it isn't.

It is better to use a tool than to guess. Of course it is. That just makes sense.

It suppose it's like a mental version of using a mower to cut the grass instead of my hands or a lesser tool like scissors.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/10/2024 16:16

But the tool is based on bollocks.
You could get the same results by flipping a coin

Bjorkdidit · 22/10/2024 16:17

What's your sample size that proves, to the 95% confidence level, that it's a better method than just guessing?

I'm not a mathematician, but a scientist with a side interest in statistics. Every hypothesis, in this case 'a tool that gives you the answer based on evidence rather than just randomly picking option A or option B, ie 'just guessing'' needs to be proved with a mechanism, rather than just occurring by random chance, or a correlation based on an unrelated factor.

TheKeatingFive · 22/10/2024 16:17

0/2 for me

Tadpolecat · 22/10/2024 16:17

Wrong. I concieved in May at 30 years old, and had a boy, not a girl.

Kdubs1981 · 22/10/2024 16:19

Well it'll be right 50% of the time

Spidey66 · 22/10/2024 16:20

I've not got kids but went by my mums age and the month I was conceived. I should've been a boy. Would have saved me a hysterectomy!

Favouritefruits · 22/10/2024 16:23

no just random, I have two boys but it came out withgirls

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 22/10/2024 16:24

I just tried it for my 3 boys and it said girl every time lol

DowntonNabby · 22/10/2024 16:32

Nope. Told me I'd have a boy, I had a girl.

So would you say that tossing a coin is better than just guessing?

Beezknees · 22/10/2024 16:51

Just checked it. Said girl. I have a boy.

Ok. I'm sorry I've been unable to explain it to you.

You’ve explained, but your explanation is nonsensical. If a tool is completely made up and based on nothing, it is no better than using no tool at all. It’s like saying a pretend lawn mower is better than using no lawn mower.

taggy321 · 22/10/2024 17:04

Weirdly right for both of mine!

Well, now you're completely changing the terms of the discussion - with this pretend tool angle. We've not been talking about a tool that does nothing (ie doesn't cut the grass, as your pretend lawnmower wouldn't).

But the Chinese prediction tool does do nothing. The end result is the same, whether you use it or not. Just like the end result is the same if you use a pretend lawn mower or if you use no lawn mower at all.

custardcreamsies · 22/10/2024 17:12

Just checked it was right for me, DM and paternal DGM. Wasn’t right for everyone else I could think of though!.

Bjorkdidit · 22/10/2024 17:13

A stopped clock is right twice a day.

@Bagpuss83 if the tool doesn't do nothing, what does it do? What factors does it assess when making it's prediction?

It does nothing? It gives you an answer. That's not nothing.
It's not the same as the pretend lawnmower at all - which actually does do nothing.

But, as I say, you're slyly steering this into a different direction and sowing confusion. You're looking to have a whole different debate than where this started. I've given you some ammo to do so in my first paragraph but, that reply is in response to altered terms.

Reserved101 · 22/10/2024 17:14

Surely Bagpuss is trolling...

Right, now you're trying to change the terms to something else than the last poster. If I read you right, you're looking to debate the inner workings of the tool. That's another topic/angle again.

We can't have 3 different debates going on. I think enough people are confused enough as it is

But guessing also gives an answer. We're just asking you to prove that the answer given by the tool is better than the answer given by randomly picking boy or girl, eg by tossing a coin.
