2 right/2 wrong for me. It's bobbins.

Let’s not go there, it’s commonly referred to as the Chinese gender prediction calendar.

whilst I’m not of Chinese heritage or origin my acupuncturist is and there is a lot in traditional Chinese medicine about when you were born and different energies. I’m not saying this is the epitome of ancient Chinese medicine but it’s not totally out there

I’m of Chinese heritage and my Chinese grandmother told me when I was ttc my second child that I should only have sex in certain months because she wanted me to have a girl 😂

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 21/10/2024 22:47

Its only got to make a choice between two options - boy or girl. Inevitably its going to be right an overall average of 50%. So it will get some right and some wrong but overall it will be right 50% of the time. Nothing even vaguely magical about it.

HaddyAbrams · 21/10/2024 22:50

Better tell my 2 sons they are actually girls!

It's wrong for both of mine.

Frozensnow · 21/10/2024 22:52

It got one right and one wrong for me

PopcornSquirrel · 21/10/2024 22:54

Commonly? By whom?

Your acupuncturist being Chinese has absolutely no relation to this and it's bizarre to state that. Yes the Chinese zodiac is about as commonly cited as the Western zodiac.

But a generator tool from babycenter dot com claiming to cite the Chinese gender prediction based on age and month - no. It has nothing to do with Chinese heritage or origin. No Chinese person has had anything to do with it. It's on a par with "Hopi ear candles". Citing culture to claim nonsense. Simple racism.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 21/10/2024 23:02

The link won't open for me. It says "unsupported protocol"

But surely if it worked then there wouldn't be a long history of female babies being abandoned in China? People would have only had sex during those times that guaranteed a boy and orphanages wouldn't have been full of unwanted girls.

hoarahloux · 21/10/2024 23:05

nopenotplaying · 21/10/2024 22:31

50/50 chance for of being right 😂

Also, to complicate things your 'Chinese' age is different.

It's not racism. It's a calendar created by Chinese people for predicting gender ffs

Show me where a Chinese person was involved in this?

The article even shows its sources!
"National Institutes of Health, National Library of Medicine, MedlinePlus, What Is NonInvasive Prenatal Testing and What Disorders Can It Screen For?, July 2021.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Chorionic Villus Sampling and Amniocentesis: Recommendations for Prenatal Counseling.
Cleveland Clinic, Amniocentesis, April 2022.
University of Michigan, Chinese Lunar Calendar: Don't Paint the Nursery Just Yet, May 2010."

That last source?

"Dr. Eduardo Villamor of the U-M School of Public Health and colleagues in Sweden and Boston found that the so-called Chinese lunar calendar method of predicting a baby’s sex is no more accurate than flipping a coin."

These websites claim to be based on an ancient chart, but there's no evidence that there's anything behind it. It's a recent thing and although it specifically mentions Chinese culture, there's absolutely no evidence behind it. It's made up. Absolutely bizarre.

Well, exactly. If this worked, there'd be no unwanted girls born anywhere around the world.

It is commonly referred to as the Chinese gender prediction calculator, it may be inappropriately called that, but a simple google will tell you that. The link I shared by the baby centre was just for ease. I’m not saying it’s evidence based rather it’s a light hearted thread asking if it has been accurate for you with your children/ grandchildren.

"commonly". Sure. When most people in this thread had never heard of it before.

"triggered" refers to a strong emotional reaction from PTSD caused by trauma. People who use it to mean "upset" "angry" "hurt" or "mildly bothered" are simply ignorant and ill-informed. Or just reacting poorly to being corrected on the internet.

im not sure what you think you’re correcting me on…?

I’ve not said that this is a bastion of Chinese culture or traditional Chinese medicine.

rather that there is this chart, that is known by this name (inappropriately maybe) was it accurate for you as it was eerily so for me and everyone I know who’s had a kid. You don’t have to answer if it upsets you

I'm correcting your use of the word "triggered", as implied by my quoting your 7-word post using that word. It's very simple.

"eerily so" meaning a 50-50 shot? Wow! So eerie!

Mumofteenandtween · 21/10/2024 23:24

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 21/10/2024 23:31

@Dreamingofthree did you miss the maths classes at school when they focused on probability?

Nothing about this is a prediction - its just probability. Nowt else.

RareitySparkles · 21/10/2024 23:31

3 out of four is correct. Weirdly, when my eldest was born he was taken straight out the room to be resuscitated and we asked the Dr what we had and she said girl si always joke we had a dd and someone with five sons asked to swop. But, he looks like his siblings so maybe not
