To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

Donald Trump’s own former Chief of Staff John Kelly.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/22/us/politics/john-kelly-trump-fitness-character.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&tgrp=bth&pvid=09FDE714-D9FD-417E-A1C1-0F4C0B8BF63B

The former general says Trump meets the definition of a fascist, would govern like a dictator and has no understanding of the Constitution or the concept of rule of law.

Kelly says: “Certainly the former president is in the far-right area, he’s certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators — he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure.”

Kelly says Trump would not want to be pictured with amputee veterans saying that “it wouldn’t look good for me.” Kelly confirms Trump spoke positively of Hitler as president. “He commented more than once that, ‘You know, Hitler did some good things, too.”

It's odd how invested people in the UK are so invested in Orange Man Bad.

Surely you know why? The leader of USA affects the world. Why would you not realise this?

I will be stunned if Trump wins. The momentum seems to be 100% with Harris.

If you had listened to the Americast podcast I posted above - you'd begin to see why our view in the UK is so far off. I have several long standing English friends in several states in the US and they tell me it's even more insane seen close up than it seems to me from across the pond: Trump definitely can win - his private polling suggests that he will: listen to the podcast - Harris is making mistakes and missing opportunities and as postal voting had already started it's probably too late to recover from that.

What are you basing this on?

I think a few weeks ago Harris had this but it seems to have waned

I've been listening to some international experts on this. The real worry is how it will embolden the far right across Europe, and the impact it'll have on climate change world wide to have a climate change denialist and conspiracy theorist in the White House.

Very, very worrying.

Exactly

It's tempting to ignore the election, just like I ignore US incidents due to lack of gun control now

But the world wide long term consequences of this are horrific

MorrisZapp · 23/10/2024 11:28

He's a vicious misogynist and he wants to close down access to abortion, yet there must be enough women in America who also want that too to make him an electoral threat.

I've never really understood this bit. In a democracy where women make up half the population, how is it possible to roll back their reproductive rights against their will?

Menopausalsourpuss · 23/10/2024 11:32

Because not all women are pro abortion especially if they're Christian. I'm quite anti abortion myself.

Out of interest what are you views on IVF? (You don't have to answer, its not meant to be a "gotcha" question). I just find the fault lines on those two issues are different in the US than the UK and that's interesting...

Are you anti abortion for other women or is it just something you wouldn't personally do? I don't ask that in an argumentative sense, more trying to get a handle on women voters.

LostittoBostik · 23/10/2024 11:45

We ALL hope that. It would be a total disaster.

Well then don’t have one. Amen.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 23/10/2024 11:55

There’s actually no such thing as being pro life. It should be re-titled pro-birth.

Because the reality is that these people who target abortion clinics, who feel that women should be denied the ability to terminate a pregnancy regardless of the reason, who shoot abortion doctors (pro life you say? Oh the irony) don’t actually care about the resultant children once they’re born. It’s all about the baby being born. None of these activists think about what happens to these babies as they grow up into children, often in poverty, sometimes the products of rape, and then into adults. Their interest stops right there, just as long as the baby is born.

In the case of rape and incest too? And what about a D&C which is impossible to get in some States, even when there is no fetal heartbeat, thereby endangering the mothers life

pointythings · 23/10/2024 12:14

Women have died in the US because they were in states with abortion bans. Banning abortion kills women. Being anti abortion is anti women.

If you're anti-abortion, don't have one. Don't remove the right from others with no exceptions for incest and rape. It has also led to women dying as in certain red states, if a woman is miscarrying and needs a D&C, it is denied to her until she gets to the point of death.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2024 12:29

Even the exceptions for rape and incest are meaningless, as if anyone who is anti abortion will readily believe a girl/woman in that situation.

Exactly. I watched footage a husband took of his wife. Their baby had died in the womb.

The mother desperately needed a D&C but she had been refused 3 times, just given medication and sent home again and again. The Doctors were too scared to do a D&C on a dead baby and the second time of going to hospital they said 'she (the mother) is not dying yet'
In other words, she needs to be literally dying before they would perform anything.

I would link the vid here but it really is too gruelling.

How any woman votes for Trump is beyond me.

User123456713 · 23/10/2024 12:39

Trump will a disaster for the world at this time, anti climate change, anti Ukraine, anti NATO and thats before we get to his protectionist tariffs ... which will hit world trade.
A Putin win in Ukraine is going to impact on the UK and Europe for many years to come and without US support, Europe cannot defend Ukraine.

If it were only just about abortion and womens rights (as vital as they are) but thats for the American people to decide.

Unfortunately, Trump will be able to do the things he didn't do last time around as now he has no re election concerns.

Should he win, WW3 comes that little bit closer.

+ + As opposed to a woman who got her initial position ( by her own admission) by sexual favours to her boss. Who has never been elected to any office ( withdrew from her primary when it was obvious that she was going to get the smallest share of the vote). Who didn’t visit the border when she was supposed to be in charge of it?
we won’t mention the earpiece, though. + +

Well yes, better that than a sex offender.

I know, right? It's like saying,

"Here are all the reasons to vote for Sandra Smith and not Peter Sutcliffe."

Yeah, but Sandra stole a Snickers in Year 9 and she stole Nicola's boyfriend in Year 10.
And don't even mention the phone pranks.

Just people confidently repeating outrageous misogynistic lies about Kamala Harris. On mumsnet.

FFs are we not better than that 🙄

thepariscrimefiles · 23/10/2024 14:30

This morning audio has been released of General John Kelly who was one of Donald Trump's closest advisers and his longest serving Chief of Staff in which he he paints a picture of a former President who has no regard for the Constitution and the rule of law and warns that he’d rule as a dictator.

He says 'certainly the former president is in the far right area, certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators, he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure'.

He also said that Trump would praise Adolf Hitler.

The fact is there are many women who are anti-abortion. I think people fail to realise just how religious many Americans are. I have dozens of American Facebook friends (because of a disease I had/joining a support group). They all talk about God and Jesus all the time. They are very proudly conservative. Being conservative is a big part of their identity. There are staunchly pro-life. They couldn't care less if a woman is pregnant because of rape. In their eyes the fetus is a person, a child of God, and deserves to live.

It's not just about being 'religious' though.

Plenty of religious people aren't supportive of total abortion bans. 59% of Catholics in the US support some access to abortion. only 25% of evangelical Christians do.

The whole concept of fetal personhood is incredibly dangerous for women.

brentwoods · 23/10/2024 18:55

People keeps saying he's a convicted sex offender. He's not -- it was a civil lawsuit, not a criminal one. Regarding an incident from almost 20 years ago. At least get your facts straight if you want to criticize people for voting for him.
