There's something weird going on in my house

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Hi op, I had an extremely similar experience and it was rats 🤢 lights in the kitchen started flickering because the little monsters had chewed through some wires, things moved around a they were trying to take it, blood in the cupboards because they had injured themselves getting in to the house. I was extremely freaked out, we live in a crumbling old farmhouse so I knew what mice are like, it wasn’t the same, so I was really worried but it turned out to be some critters from the drains as the rat flap in the drain had wedged open from the storms allowing them to come explore. I know it’s gross to hear, but a visit from pest control sorted it and I wanted to share to might offer some reassurance that there’s very unlikely to be a poltergeist or a homeless man in the loft! Xx

Could be a poltergeist

Ihavesomeideas · 23/10/2024 13:36

Apologies if already suggested but do you have a working carbon monoxide monitor?

It's literally in the OP.

Probably just missed a bit on top of the toilet. Your bin needs emptying and there's bits on the floor too.

raindaisy · 23/10/2024 13:49

Think I'd be laying traps to see if things move or footsteps. Powder sprinkled on the floor. Take photos of where things are. A piece of thread in the door as it's closed so when it's opened it drops so you can see if anyone has opened that door. Same on fridge door.

I'll keep saying this...I haven't known them to be that keen on milk, or doing things unobserved

How do you drop toothpaste on the cistern?

I know someone that had the same and one day they had an unexpected day off work and heard a noise and someone was coming out of the loft. The previous person had been living in there and coming down then they were out

ThePoshUns · 23/10/2024 14:53

Can't believe how many people have had people living in their loft. And there's me thinking it was an urban myth. 🤔

Definitely sounds like an intruder using your home
you need to get more cameras up asap . Off could you stay home to catch whoever it is

The same way as on the bath mat, or the bin, or the cat, or your bare foot, I dare say. By dropping the toothpaste.

Aren't you a delight? @Cakencookieobsessed

Was that comment really necessary?

My bathroom bin is full too, wanna have a dig at me about it? 🙄🙄🙄

Do you always feel the need to be so unpleasant?

Tangerinenets · 23/10/2024 15:51

SummerFeverVenice · 19/10/2024 23:35

If it’s not an intruder than a possibility might be husband has lost job and pretend leaves for it every morning and then sloths about the house all day, leaves just before you come home and then comes back at usual time if he’d worked.

He would know the blind spots of your cameras.

😂😂

Mmmm dunno. Just doesn’t seem a likely place one would naturally be at risk of dropping toothpaste on. The mat and the bin sounds more likely. I dare say.

There's a great big windowsil behind the toilet where I keep stuff.
