There's something weird going on in my house

1000 replies

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Sorry I haven't read all the thread and I was joking when I mentioned ghosts before. The thing with your cats explains a lot, but not the fridge left open. They are seriously not that clever or dextrous. Have you seen The Sixth Sense? Sorry to bring it back to the supernatural but it is coming up to Halloween, maybe this is someone playing tricks on you.

Biddie191 · 21/10/2024 15:49

If you dampen the potential blood spots, they should give reddish brown on tissue paper.

My cat broke our fridge by leaving the door open when we were away and we had to have child locks installed to keep the little bugger out as he was in there merrily eating all the chicken and bacon on more than one occasion. He even moved a chair or two from in front of it a few times 😂. Some cats can and will get into everything including a fridge or two

As does insect poo.

Of rats?! I bloody hope not!

Though it would explain a lot. 😑😑

I'm very interested what is 'of rats' since the original post has been deleted?

fashionqueen0123 · 21/10/2024 16:27

hopefully you can set up some cameras and see what’s going on!

Memory being unreliable is fact.

I don't need to know the op to understand that memory is scientifically proven to be completely unreliable.

You seem to believe I was saying my opinion on the most likely explanation of the op's situation is what I was referring to as fact.

You are wrong.

I was referring to the proven unreliability of the human memory as fact.

Which it is.

Totally get and understand what you’re saying, and yes that’s how memory works. It sounded as though you were categorically saying this is the case here for OP. However, there’s a huge amount of memory trickery here if that’s the case, therefore it’s unlikely to be this imo.

Sia8899 · 21/10/2024 17:28

I'm sure you've thought of this already but did you change the locks on the back door as well as the front door? And made sure all windows are locked as well as closed? Have you bought humane traps for rats/mice? (although that'd be one hell of a rat to get milk out of the fridge). My money is on your sister as that's really the only explanation at this point, not that she's doing it to prank you but she left some bits out, you left some bits out and these things have all come together to freak you out

SassySnake · 21/10/2024 17:36

Does anyone who comes into the house get nosebleeds? When I was pregnant I’d get nosebleeds and whenever I’d blow my nose in the bathroom there would be droplets of blood on the walls, or on the toilet just as you showed in the picture.

No. Not at all. I was saying I think it's the most likely explanation for anything odd once you rule out - what was it I said? people, animals and shit breaking? something like that. The bit in brackets.

I personally think, but am not stating as fact, that given the op has said she feels it's definitely not her animals, there's nothing she thinks could be broken and she is sure it's not her family who live locally and have keys, then what's left is either

an ex from years ago who lives miles away and who the op really thinks wouldn't be arsed to come over every day to move milk.

or misremembering stuff and becoming aware of things and putting them all together and being hyper aware of little things that otherwise wouldn't even be on either her or her partner's radar. All the times we're convinced we put our shoes in the cupboard but we find them on the shoe rack. Because we put them on the shoe rack and totally forgot sort of thing.

The wild cards here, of course, are a stranger who has got hold of a key and sneaks into their house to move keys and make sinks dirty or the world's most boring poltergeist. :D

I'm joking there, OP, it's almost certainly just quirks of memory, not someone coming into your house, I'm sure.

WhatsInTheRug · 21/10/2024 17:45

This thread will end as a disappointment.....been here too long to get over excited...

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 21/10/2024 18:20

I hope it does.

Anything that is 'exciting' for strangers reading it can only be upsetting for the OP living it.

I hope it turns out it's the pair of them being half asleep in the mornings and both utterly drippy.

Andthesky · 21/10/2024 18:26

The phrase 'when you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras' is apt, particularly with OP's name.

In the balance of probabilities, the odds are very much that this is forgetfulness and flea dirt, not poltergeists and intruders.

It is the sister

sister with ND, undiagnosed OCD and retidying your house or just being nosey

horseHorseHorse · 21/10/2024 19:22

It's not my sister. I've asked her point blank multiple times now and she's said she's not doing anything. In 40 odd years of knowing her, I have never known her to lie!

@VikingFortiesCromartyNorthWest4to6South3to5Later yep. I agree. Started off believable..... not so much now.

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 21/10/2024 19:43

but i shared some of our local neighborhood stories. We have some dementic and special needs guy who go to sheds, take people's things, move between sheds lol and we know some low level criminal also who goes into people's properties also but does not steal, just wants to make sure no one will get him - we tolerate them

the police came and what they did, what I suggested, had a look and asked you are valuables missing? No, they are not. OK, then good bye

it is someone who has access to your house and that currently is your sister
if it happens to have a crazy dementic who has keys , you will discover it also

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 21/10/2024 19:44

dementic - not a word , sorry. A crazy guy with a possible dementia who gets confused where his home is and the authorities still are not aware of him, because he lives with family and keeps switching on

Calling you out for not being willing to accept that the simplest explanation is the most likely explanation and is what is happening here I would think.

The phrogger in the walls is probably watching you post on MN, knowing he's caught out

MiriamMay · 21/10/2024 20:11

This kind of thing happened to my mum.

It turned out it was the very early stages of dementia.

She would accuse us of leaving things in weird places, lights on etc.
