Nursery incident. Ofsted?

Felly67 · 18/10/2024 18:27

My DD nursery has dress up women’s fancy hats and shoes from charity shops. Today she was injured by hat pin that was left inside one. It was a large pin that secured a decoration on the hat. Would you report this to ofsted?

I agree with the majority of posters here.

Why don't you start again OP and tell us what you said to the nursery staff and what they said in reply?

Well OP, are you going to?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/10/2024 19:25

Does she still have an eye?

If she does, don't be so ridiculous.

Felly67 · 18/10/2024 19:25

It wasn’t just a regular pin. It was a very long and sharp one. It poked her eye annd eyelid and she was very upset. It could have been worse. They said sorry but it makes me wonder are they careless and don’t check their equipment

Certain types of accidents do have to be reported to ofsted by chikdcare settings but I think this would be considered minor. They have examples on the government website.

Felly67 · 18/10/2024 19:26

Ok, maybe odsted was over reaction. But they state that they check and risk assess everything but this has been missed and it could have caused a bad injury

Forget OFSTED, you need 999 🙄

Don't be ridiculous! 999?
A one-off accident in a nursery with no lasting damage has to be the United Nations Security Council at least....

crumblingschools · 18/10/2024 19:28

Was there an accident form? Have you asked how they could prevent an accident like this happening again?

comedycentral · 18/10/2024 19:28

I'm sorry she was injured, but it was an accident. It sounds like they were transparent with you about the incident. You could ask them how they will ensure safety in the future—what will they change, do, or stop doing as a result of the accident?

You’re right, I clearly wasn’t thinking!

Frowningprovidence · 18/10/2024 19:30

If it has poked her eye have you sought medical care? It's just you need to be very careful with eyes.

The government website details the type of injury you might report to ofsted..

It’s amazing anyone can be bothered to run a nursery given some of the posts I read on here

Has anybody seen Superman recently? He might be at a loose end and looking for a shocking injustice to right with his x-ray vision for spotting hatpins, laser eyesight to melt them into the shape of little round bunnies and his ability to turn back time by flying around the world widdershins.

Ozanj · 18/10/2024 19:33

Absolutely, yes. Wtf are they using hat pins to secure decorations onto dress up clothes?

Emily19944 · 18/10/2024 19:34

Would you report yourself to social services or the police if this incident happened in your own home? Of course you wouldn't, it’s an accident.

stichguru · 18/10/2024 19:34

If it was a pattern of accidently not checking things like toys falling apart when she was on them, or non child safe equipment being left out unsupervised, yes. Otherwise, of course not.

I find it difficult to believe that everything in your home that isn't in a locked cupboard is safe for your child to play with. Or maybe your child is within reach and sight of an adult at 24/7?!

Orangewinegum8481 · 18/10/2024 19:36

Give your head a wobble.

crumblingschools · 18/10/2024 19:37

@Ozanj I would assume it came from the charity shop like that, not that the nursery thought it would be a good idea to use a hat pin. It was just that the nursery didn't see the hat pin already in the hat

PorridgeEater · 18/10/2024 19:37

Yes it's horrible having something like that happen to your child.
I agree nursery staff were careless but doubt Ofsted would be interested.

Glutenfreebread · 18/10/2024 19:37

TreeofStrife · 18/10/2024 19:19

So you’re saying she should go to Ofsted? I don’t think anyone is suggesting this is great, but I seems to be isolated human error.

No I said complain to the nursery and if the response isn’t satisfactory take it further but really the nursery should be apologising and looking into their risk assessments and checking who actually got the clothing and finding out why they didn’t check it was safe before children were able to play with it . If they were dismissive then absolutely go to Ofsted as we don’t know if there have been other safeguarding problems so it’s always best to make then aware if necessary

WhatsInTheRug · 18/10/2024 19:38

Babbadoobabbadock · 18/10/2024 18:30

What do you expect Ofsted to do ?

Also wondering this!? OP?

Glutenfreebread · 18/10/2024 19:39

Would you report yourself to social services or the police if this incident happened in your own home? Of course you wouldn't, it’s an accident.

If a child was injured with a sharp object like that at home and presented to a medical professional I would expect there would be some kind of contact from either a HV and/or SS for a quick follow up to make sure the home environment is safe, don’t see why this would be any different and you could argue that a nursery should actually be safer than a home !

TreeofStrife · 18/10/2024 19:09

Yes, you should also notify the Prime Minister and the UN Security Council.

Or maybe just don’t?

I thought an audience with the King might be in order...

I'm sure you check and risk assess everything as a parent too, but bet your child has still been injured or had an accident. It happens and it's not always somebody's fault
