Nursery incident. Ofsted?

Felly67 · 18/10/2024 18:27

My DD nursery has dress up women’s fancy hats and shoes from charity shops. Today she was injured by hat pin that was left inside one. It was a large pin that secured a decoration on the hat. Would you report this to ofsted?

Well, I would have thought these types of hats would be checked. It hurt her eye as she was wearing it

It's an unfortunate accident and luckily your DD didn't have a serious injury.

This hat has been checked and sold from a charity shop. It's been in the dressing up section for who knows how long, played with by who knows how many children, been handled numerous times by children and probably staff.

It must've been wedged into the hat where it wasn't noticeable, for no-one to notice it when they picked up or handled the hat, before wearing it.

I expect the nursery have done their own accident form and they've informed you of what happened.

What are you hoping to achieve by reporting the nursery?

Wishboneswishes · 18/10/2024 19:04

Could have been nasty but seems your DD was ok?
I would hope the nursery would learn a lesson from this to check all dress up clothes in future.
Not an OFSTED matter really but it depends on the response from the nursery and of course it’s up to you if you report or not. I’d be upset if it happened to my child/grandchild and I think any parent would be.

frenchnoodle · 18/10/2024 19:05

Ofsted isn't for this.

Ttcagainnow · 18/10/2024 19:05

Of course I wouldn't contact ofsted. Do the nursery contact social services everytime you make a mistake?

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 18/10/2024 19:05

Really…do not do this!

This!

LuluBlakey1 · 18/10/2024 19:06

If it is anything it is Health and Safety. Discuss it with the nursery. If you feel they were neglectful after that, you can ring H and S at the local authority. If no one was seriously injured, I doubt they would be much interested but they may have had other concerns flagged up so it could be part of a bigger picture.

It's not for Ofsted.

VioletCrawleyForever · 18/10/2024 19:07

Good grief. No. It was an accident. 😳

StampOnTheGround · 18/10/2024 19:07

No it's not an ofsted matter, you can talk about it to the nursery.

Imagine if something like this had happened at home, and nursery then suddenly reported you to social services straight away.

Bellatrixpure · 18/10/2024 19:08

Hiya, hope your daughter’s eye is ok. I can understand your concern but I don’t think ofsted would be interested. Just make a note in your diary and watch out for any other careless incidents. The hat really should have been checked.

so many mean sarcastic replies on here. Grow up please

PrueRamsay · 18/10/2024 19:08

You’re That Parent.

TreeofStrife · 18/10/2024 19:09

Yes, you should also notify the Prime Minister and the UN Security Council.

Or maybe just don’t?

lolablink · 18/10/2024 18:35

Get a grip

It’s not a grip, it’s a hat pin!

Also, OP - no.

JellycatParent · 18/10/2024 19:11

Report to Ofsted for something that was literally an accident and I’m sure the staff are really upset about? Come on…

DrinkElephants · 18/10/2024 19:11

Ffs no!!!

hockityponktas · 18/10/2024 19:11

No not ofsted worthy at all. I’m sure it was a genuine mistake. If you don’t trust them to keep your child safe, take them out.

Mallysmomma · 18/10/2024 19:12

Absolutely not; you’re being ridiculous! She must be your first child! Totally understand you being annoyed that due diligence wasn’t applied here but if they are a good nursery other than this isolated incident you need to chill out and chalk it up to an unfortunate lapse in judgement.

BotterMon · 18/10/2024 19:13

No. Accidents happen and as long as accident report done & nursery informed you and apologised then not an issue. Ofsted wouldn't give a shit.

LoafofSellotape · 18/10/2024 19:14

I'm surprised at the responses here , everything should be checked thoroughly. What was the injury and what was the response from the nursery.

I'm just imagining as a nanny if I'd let that happen, don't think my employers would've been best pleased.

crumblingschools · 18/10/2024 19:17

@LoafofSellotape but would your employers immediate reaction be contact Ofsted

Glutenfreebread · 18/10/2024 19:17

I’m surprised at some of the responses? This is a dangerous sharp item that could cause a nasty injury ? The staff should make sure everything is safe and age appropriate and would absolutely at the very least be making a complaint to the nursery itself and depending on their response perhaps take it further. It could be a small piece of a puzzle you don’t know there may have been other issues there before ?

Dinosweetpea · 18/10/2024 19:18

No, FGS 🤦‍♀️

So you’re saying she should go to Ofsted? I don’t think anyone is suggesting this is great, but I seems to be isolated human error.

Fluufer · 18/10/2024 19:21

Hurt how? Pierced her eyeball? Possibly. A little scratch on the skin? No way.

I would expect them to take it seriously and improve their risk assessment in the future though.

Hat pins aren't really something most of us use these days, I wouldn't even think to look for one. It really wouldn't occur to me to do more than check it was clean.

RoastLambs · 18/10/2024 19:22

Well no.

What would they have done had you been in this situation?

Contact OFSTED?
Summon a policeman?
Fire you?

Or talk to you about what happened.
