CF parked on my driveway!

SEMPA1234567 · 15/10/2024 14:05

CF has now been parked on my driveway for at least 3 hours! Husband home soon and won’t be able to park!

My question is what can you actually practically do about this, apart from giving them an earful if you spot them returning to their car!! 😂

A quick google says

  1. the police won’t do anything (they might if it’s stoping you getting off your drive but not if they’re preventing you accessing your drive)
  2. My areas police website says try contacting the council . The councils website clearly states they will not remove vehicles or issue parking charge notices for private drives

Also you are not allowed to block them in as this is an offence to stop them leaving and obviously you can not damage their car as this would be criminal damage.

Assuming you don’t want to break the law 😂 what are you meant to legally do if someone parks on your drive??

Has anyone successfully got any type of justice against a CF?!? Or can I now just go around being a CF never paying for parking and just using other peoples drives?!?

Why haven't you updated, OP?

Did your DP or teenage kid tell their friend they could park there, I wonder?

Sorry for late reply, I was working last night then straight on school run this morning.

To clarify the space is 100% ours. It’s our land, we would not have brought the house if it didn’t have a parking space as parking round here is a nightmare! It’s basically a small front garden that has been converted into a parking space. There is one house that still has a fence up around their space and chooses just to have a garden but 99% of the houses have converted into a parking space.

DH came home after picking up kids from school CF still there!! Had to drop kids in house then drive around looking for parking space!!

DH not happy, started walking around car taking pictures, asked immediate neighbours, was ready to post pictures on local fb group to see if anyone knows CF.

We all go inside and not long after I hear CF speeding away. Too late to catch up with them but they must have known they were in the wrong as had very quietly (and quickly) moved the 2 cones I had placed either end of car!! 😂

Bit of an anti climax sorry! I have loved all your suggestions though! I have photos of car and if they are cheeky enough to do it again I 100% will use some of them. I’m thinking 2nd offence Vaseline + bird seed and 3rd offence would be nappies + poo on handles! 😂

I guess OP has not come back because the diagram shows it's not actually a driveway, but a space on the (public) road .... still, a dramatic title gets more interest doesn't it?

There are lots of different lay outs of private parking spaces including permit only parking on streets. I don't know why you find it so hard to comprehend this layout where each house has its own spot. Maybe you are only used to detached houses with sweeping drives.

Yogachick · 16/10/2024 10:50

@evtheria could you post a link to that one pls x

Title says 'driveway' - the diagram shows it is not what most of us recognise as a driveway, which is usually on a property's private land, but rather a parking bay on a public road. Not sure why that is hard to comprehend.

We have a parking space in front of our garage which is in a block of 7 behind the houses. Everyone still calls it their drive. Try to be less narrow minded.

You're somehow misinterpreting the diagram and the OPs subsequent clarifications.
I'm not sure if there's a specific term for 'front garden turned into hardstanding for car', other than 'driveway'.

Do you have a dropped kerb? If not they are entitled to park there.

All of our front gardens/parking spaces are level with the road so no need for a dropped kerb.

Why does that mean they can park on my land? Would you let someone park in your front garden?

No but if you didnt have a dropped kerb it's not technically a drive so someone could park across it. I would definitely put up a 'private parking' or similar sign from now on. Someone might have mistaken it for a layby or public/street parking. Hard to say without a photo. And no I wouldn't let anyone park in my land but I have a 'proper' driveway at the front of my house so I guess that's different.

If they don't have a dropped kerb, the CF is entitled to park on the road, blocking their space. CF is not entitled to park IN their space

Yes while i understand the op's annoyance it is in no way a driveway it is an allocated space at the front of their house. Easy enough for someone to park there if unfamiliar with the area.

usernotuser · 16/10/2024 11:55

I think next time something more substantial than a traffic cone is needed to inconvenience them and a really big piece of cardboard on their windscreen to state "do not park here, you're on private land".....you twat. Last bit optional.

wheel chocks?

Gloriia · 16/10/2024 12:02

You need to have clear signs saying private parking/permit holders whatever or even a bollard.
I understand it is your allocated space but many properties such as terraced houses like you don't have driveways so that is perhaps why the driver thought it was a public space?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/10/2024 12:14

Even though it is right in front of @SEMPA1234567's house, where their front garden would be, @Gloriia? I'm struggling to see how anyone could mistake that for a public parking place.

Yes, as I say I can understand the ops annoyance as it her allocated place but it isn't a driveway. It is just the front of her house, level with the road. I think it would be an easy mistake to make.

I’d say it’s pretty clear they’re out spaces, we’ve lived here 6 years and no one else has ever parked there (well not that I’ve seen! 😂)

They’re paved with pebbles/stones, surrounded with a paved boarder and a hedge that goes all the way around the space (green bit on diagram! 😂).

The stones on the floor a very obviously decorative and something put in by the owner of the house, nothing like what you’d get on a public road.

This is how @SEMPA1234567 describes the space, @Gloriia - it sounds pretty obvious to me that it doesn't look like a public parking spot.

Find lots of slugs and snails and place them on the wind screen..

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 16/10/2024 13:00

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in social media here, CF means "close friend".

Yeah, there is a slight difference between that and MN...

Reminds me of the grandma who received a text message telling her that somebody had died, and she replied 'LOL' to the bereaved family member, genuinely believing that it stood for 'lots of love' Grin

LlynTegid · 16/10/2024 13:01

Front garden would have been a better description, however OP I think your point remains.

Saracen · 16/10/2024 13:34

If you're still wanting your revenge, you might check the databases on the off chance the car is untaxed or uninsured or out of MOT, so you could report it.

usernotuser · 16/10/2024 13:41

@quantumbutterfly

Don't think a large wedge of cheese will help actually, they might eat it! 😁

Flipzandchipz · 16/10/2024 13:42

Have you gone online to check if the car is taxed? Would be a nice little revenge if it isn’t as you can report them to the dvla
