What do you collect?

And why?

I've never been a collector, have moved over a hundred times and have no emotions towards physical things but I always think it would be nice to collect something, it must be satisfying finding something for your collection or saving up to get something etc

It would be outing to explain exactly what I collect, but in general terms it’s antiques that relate to my hobby - usually from the early to mid 1800s. So imagine if I were a knitter, I would collect interesting knitting bags and needles, or if I were a painter I would collect artist’s palettes and paintboxes. I clean them up and use them for my hobby.

My favourite is finding a thing that needs a bit of restoration, and is really cheap as a result. I’ve had some excellent finds on eBay and in second-hand shops.

Sometimes, the things I collect come with other random stuff from the period - I’ve found letters, shopping lists, a coin purse, a penknife, all kinds of things. That’s always really fun - you get a strong sense of the human being who owned the object before you and used it.

That sounds really interesting, like a treasure hunt!

I collect tarot and oracle cards, as well as weird and wonderful pagan / witchy curios ( bones, stones, preserved specimens etc.

RabbitsRock · 14/10/2024 19:51

Rocks. I love rocks😊

I still have some of the first rocks I found as a small child. Beautiful ones from around the world.

We have little piles of rocks all over that house collected by me and the children. I love it.

Swarovski crystal because they are pretty & I like sparkly things.

StressedQueen · 14/10/2024 19:56

Bows and ribbons, I find them so pretty and they are always useful. My daughter has a very big obsession with everything bow related so I often find some missing!

NorthernGirlie · 14/10/2024 19:58

Yarn. Not on purpose, I'm meant to buy it to make specific things but it's so pretty and squishy it's definitely become a collection 💖

K0OLA1D · 14/10/2024 19:59

I collect ceramic ghosts.

It's a fairly recent thing. But I'm really enjoying it!

curiouscat1987 · 14/10/2024 20:00

Money. Im not very good at it 🤣

Flucanfeckoff · 14/10/2024 20:00

Gem stones, crystals. @overmydeadbody we are similar. Everyone in our house likes a stone. DD appears to collect shells and Damascene jewellery. I collect coins, stamps and small antique tems from house clearances off eBay. I love it when someone has written a personal note on the back of something from the 20s or whatever.

PassingStranger · 14/10/2024 20:00

Dust.

MyEarringsAreGreen · 14/10/2024 20:00

Pens in a specific colour. I've got about 15 in my pot on my desk. I know, it's weird! 🤣

How did you guess? 😂😂

Mollyplop999 · 14/10/2024 20:03

Pottery. I love old pitcher and bowls, art deco cups and saucers, and anything else that takes my fancy.

Flucanfeckoff · 14/10/2024 20:03

Ex teacher. I still dream about purple and green pens. For my sins.

Flucanfeckoff · 14/10/2024 20:03

Forgot to quote @MyEarringsAreGreen about the pens.

Zoomo · 14/10/2024 20:05

They are amazing.

Hummusanddipdip · 14/10/2024 20:08

Books, I've got over 600 on my bookcases and bar 1 shelf I've read them all.

Dh collects guitars.

Zoomo · 14/10/2024 20:05

Are they from York?

Oh no. They are from a local ceramics business (Black Star)

But I aim to go to York to the Ghost Merchants 👻

Academic books. Too many of them!! I’m an academic and I’m so bad at getting rid of them. I think, “what if I start a new project related to this and need this?” I even have duplicates in different translations of some texts but can’t get rid of them because they’re like old friends. I guess it’s more hoarding than collecting. 💜📚
