To not recognise Kemi Badenoch's views on ASD?

Locutus2000 · 14/10/2024 15:22

The likely next leader of His Majesty's opposition

The Tory leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch has been criticised for a campaign pamphlet that said autistic people received “better treatment” and “economic privileges and protections”.

A pamphlet published by Badenoch’s campaign team at the Conservative party conference argued that conditions such as anxiety, as well as an autism diagnosis, had gone from something “people should work on themselves as individuals” to “something that society, schools, and employers have to adapt around”

I'd love to know what improved treatment and economic privileges I should be getting - maybe I forgot to apply.

What do Kemi supporters find attractive?

What economic privileges are there to being autistic, exactly?

I had to drop out of the workforce for two years in order to secure appropriate support for my autistic non verbal daughter who has a genetic disorder.

As ever, DLA and Pip are about care needs and not diagnosis.

It really is awful she is trying to appeal to the ignorant masses who fail to understand this point.

MrsHemswoth · 14/10/2024 16:25

I live in her constituency and she is very disliked and it's building... she only just about clung on to her seat at the last election!! She may even lose her seat as this area is becoming increasingly liberal minded and far less right wing thank goodness!!! Many families moved out to Essex from London since the pandemic and many Londoners and their families are less rightwing, hence a Labour mayor. I think if she becomes leader it's will be curtains for the Tory's!!

What do Kemi supporters find attractive?

It's just the standard fare of picking a group and saying "look, they're getting all this stuff that you aren't getting, isn't it unfair!" while wilfully ignoring any context, or actual facts.

To my mind this is evil in action. Maybe it's my 'autistic privilege' talking...

Also, children without disabilities- not just ASD - absolutely fo also get home to school transport.

She needs to stop huffing paint

Huffing paint is surely too lower class for our Kemi.

My money's on a whole load of cocaine. As with many tories.

There will be thousands of people reading this post and quietly thinking "well, I agree with her", unfortunately. They're on every thread where a struggling parent is struggling to get reasonable adjustments made at school, or an autistic person is struggling at work. They're agitating to get children with SEN removed from their own child's classroom, or they're sending their kids to private schools to avoid pupils with SEN and then complaining that they're still having to share resources with them. Badenoch may be the intellectual equivalent of a crack-addicted honey badger, but her advisers know there are plenty of British voters who won't be deterred by this sort of bigotry.

whiskeyarmadillo · 14/10/2024 16:38

I'm autistic as are two of my children. There is no privilege. Our lives are so difficult because of our autism.

Pernicious, offensive and factually wrong. This is the modern Conservative Party? Fuck the Tories.

Singleandproud · 14/10/2024 16:02

No publicity is bad publicity though. Kemis had at least 8 different threads on MN over the last few days and whilst it might not be good for her I bet it works in favour for the Tory's overall. They need to out reform Reform and get the dissenters back and crap like this may well do it.

Tbh they can have people who buy this crap back.

SerendipityJane · 14/10/2024 17:47

St. Kemi who KWAWI ? Surely not ! I thought she was the saviour of everyone of us all ? (To the tune of "Flash !" by Queen)

There must be some mistake. Maybe another Kemi Badenoch ?

Paw5 · 14/10/2024 17:51

Oh my goodness that’s appalling, does she not realise autism is a protected disability!!😱

WTAF!!! So she’s massively ableist and decrying disabled people getting reasonable adjustments and you trot this out.

That poster was surely being sarcastic. Mocking Badenoch supporters?

Jessie1259 · 14/10/2024 18:01

Took me 4 years of asking just to get DS sat that the front of his classes as he can't filter out distractions, didn't cost anyone anything but still took 4 years! NHS offered us a badly photocopied book list. If only Kemi had pointed us in the direction of all these 'privileges' at the time we'd have been very grateful.

That's how I read it. There's a core of support who'll overlook all the ableist stuff Badenoch spouts because "she knows what a woman is".

Not when the UK is out of the ECHR it's not.

Soukmyfalafel · 14/10/2024 18:01

I see there are lots of posters agreeing with her point of view 😂

Exactly and the rest can be forgiven if they support one issue.

She's a vile POS.

So over qualified as Tory leader, really.

Not when the UK is out of the ECHR it's not.

The 2010 Equality Act which protects disabilities including autism is still in force.

EUmumforever · 14/10/2024 18:19

She knows what a woman is, apparently, but doesn’t know what autism and depression are, wow!
She is a not very intelligent climber who will say anything. I am sure she was a bully at school.

Paw5 · 14/10/2024 18:23

She sounds just like Trump.

A leader who doesn’t enlighten themselves with legalities before they spout off complete rubbish would be a horrendous leader even by Tory standards.

DoubleShotEspresso · 14/10/2024 18:25

As if we required confirmation of what utter pond life this poor excuse for a human this woman is.

Vile, abhorrent & desperate for shock value attention.

JohnTheRevelator · 14/10/2024 18:25

Ghastly woman.

LetThereBeLove · 14/10/2024 18:29

MrTwatchester · 14/10/2024 15:43

Pretty standard for the trounced opposition to go through a couple of complete duds as leaders while they regroup. There's no point expecting any real contenders for a good few years.

Boris is just biding his time.
