I've booked the trip of a lifetime

DH & I have been looking for ages and after a few drinks we have booked to go on a holiday of a lifetime, however I need to tell my manager next week. I will need 3 weeks off including over Christmas /NY

I work for a smallish team and we have to split the leave between us as we can't all be off at the same time, so it will mean that some of their Christmas plans will be affected if they were hoping to have time off. I know he might tell me I can't have it off in which case I would leave my job.

I feel awkward about it but also I've just got to that point where I just want to do what makes me happy. Aibu?

You wouldn’t get 3 weeks leave off with a couple of months notice in most places I have worked, and definitely not over Christmas.

Fine, book the leave but I’d fully expect you to have to resign to take the time off.

ps, we allow people to take extended holidays for a ‘trip of a lifetime’ - Mexico (if it’s just a beach holiday) wouldn’t usually meet this

Edited

As she has said trip of a lifetime I very much doubt it's just a beach holiday.

Mexico has an awful lot more to it than Cancun and sitting on the beach...

Someone who can afford to resign? Within weeks of leaving a role colleagues move on, and people are quickly forgotten.
Spending time away with someone you love is remembered forever.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 12/10/2024 19:33

You almost certainly won't get that time off agreed, so put your notice in and see if you can get a new job sorted to start in the new year. Doesn't hurt to start looking now.

Bloody good for you though 👏🏻 if you died, they'd have an advert out for your replacement within a week. Life is too short! Have an amazing holiday.

I've been thinking of leaving/finding a new job for a while. I'm fed up and just lost my mojo a bit. I accept it's probably not the best way to go about it.
I do need a job but can realistically afford to go 3/4 months without working.

You might be thinking of leaving but you are still being a selfish arsehole leaving your colleagues in the lurch like this. The world does not revolve around you FFS

LurkingFromTheShadows · 12/10/2024 19:37

Your poor colleagues
Hopefully they'll get a replacement in for you soon so that your colleagues don't have to work extra over the holidays.

Your trip of a lifetime is to Mexico? A whole lifetime? Mexico?

That's really rude

Are You Mexican?

Stompythedinosaur · 12/10/2024 19:50

I think you've been pretty hasty. I don't imagine most managers would be inclined to grant 3 weeks off over Christmas. I think you're running the risk of choosing between losing your money on the holiday or losing your job.

I can't imagine booking a holiday before leave was agreed.

ahemfem · 12/10/2024 19:57

InNeedOfAWin · 12/10/2024 19:49

Are You Mexican?

Why?

It's rude. Someone really wants to go to Mexico. Their life ambition. Who are you to rubbish it even if you personally think Mexico isn't a good holiday destination.

GivingitToGod · 12/10/2024 19:58

Most workplaces have a policy re booking leave and getting it approved before booking a holiday! Services wouldn't work otherwise

Finetoday · 12/10/2024 19:58

I think, mentally you’ve already left.
Just resign and either holiday in between, or declare it in any interview.

Congratulations on your new chapter!

Mexico is amazing. have you been to Chichen Itza, Coba or Uxmal? Have you swam in the Cenotes or snorkelled with Turtles at Akumal? Have you been on a boat trip to swim with Whale Sharks or waded through the bioluminescence off Holbox island? Honestly Mexico is one of my favourite countries in the world, stunning and so much to do.

Franklyyes · 12/10/2024 20:00

Trip of a lifetime - Mexico?

Dymaxion · 12/10/2024 20:01

I'd re-book and go to Costa Rica if I were you and wanted the holiday of a lifetime.

WonderingWanda · 12/10/2024 20:01

Well if your notice period is short enough that you can do this then why not. Although I wouldn't present it as an ultimatum when you ask. I am sure there will be plenty of people looking for work in the run up to Christmas so they will be able to fill your role.

What bit of Mexico are you going to?

Bet you a tenner OP is going all inclusive and does none of these things

greenrollneck · 12/10/2024 20:06

It's pretty selfish unless it's next Christmas, congrats you've just potentially ruined others time off!!

Because OP has posted on a public forum and invited others’ opinions.

Also, I’m clearly not the only one with that opinion, so feel free to jump on them too.

MSLRT · 12/10/2024 20:07

Great for you but sounds very selfish.

While this is true, it doesn't require three weeks off over Christmas. It could be done at a different time of year, or in a slightly shorter time, or after negotiation with her manager. My concern is that someone who seems Mexico as once in a lifetime probably can't afford to give up their job without something else lined up. 3-4 months passes quickly.

Dymaxion · 12/10/2024 20:08

waded through the bioluminescence off Holbox island?

Is that where that poor girl nearly got eaten by an alligator/crocodile ?

Newdaynewdrama · 12/10/2024 20:20

Jesus! So because on a drunken whim you decided to go on holiday - no one else is allowed Christmas or New Year plans.....wow.

westisbest1982 · 12/10/2024 20:35

You have savings for only three or four months to cover you if you don't get work for a while and that isn't much money - what if it takes you longer than four months to get a job? Also the potential lack of a reference would worry me. And what would you say in an interview when you're asked why you left your former job? Seems a bit silly what you've done, tbh...if you're comfortably off, however, that's another story.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2024 21:11

But @coffeesaveslives its not about a couple of extra quid. It’s the opposite of that.
