Iwishicouldflyhigh · 12/10/2024 10:08

whoever you voted for, what are your thoughts after the First 100 Days?
I didn’t vote for Labour, but I was quite excited in their first few weeks as Keir got his head down and I was excited fir change.

Now I just feel deflated. Same old….freebiegate, nitpicking, infighting. A bit depressing really.

i don’t even think there was a decent alternative really….and that’s even more depressing!!!!!

These posts are genuinely embarrassing

Even Starmer has admitted their performance hasn’t been great so far. Labour sleaze will be its downfall. Not just for the acts themselves but for the utter hypocrisy of the party and supporters.

Isn't it funny that a few freebies (that didn't break any rules) and dancing while on holiday is classified as sleaze when it comes to labour, but affairs, lying to parliament, breaking the law, million pound government contracts to friends and family, failing to declare interests, and sexual assaults are just a normal part of politics for the Tories.

I wish I had the same double standards that conservative supporters have, would make life a hell of a lot easier.

EasternStandard · 12/10/2024 17:37

You meant another poster, I’ve been posting that support was there and now it’s gone under Labour

Oh, sorry if it was a different poster. But as I said, we don't know what support will be available, if there is any it should be means tested as giving billions to people who didn't need it has probably made the financial situation in the country worse.

Nasyan · 12/10/2024 17:49

I'm disappointed they haven't rolled back banning ICE vehicles to 2030, maybe they will do that at the budget

Electric vehicles will never happen. Manufactures are closing down production. 2035 won’t even happen. Hydrogen is the natural successor to the ICE. Widespread technology is 15 years away. Petrol cars won’t disappear in my lifetime.

I’m not a conservative voter

It’s sleaze when a millionaire donor pays for clothing, holidays, birthdays parties of labour MPs….and in return gets security access to 10 Downing Street.

Its hypocrisy when Labour supporters try and make out Tory sleaze is worse. Sleaze is a sleaze. Just this time it’s gift wrapped in a bright red bow instead of a blue one.

If only Labour supporters held their party accountable, recognised and acknowledged what has gone on is completely unacceptable, then the party would be able to move forward and have a chance in Government. However,
posts like yours and many others on here, pretending the situation is perfectly acceptable, will seal the party’s downfall.

I doubt we’ll see the same support, if any.

High energy costs will be part of what makes this winter hard for many.

Plus there does seem to be a contradiction in your posts. Saying the costs were high under last gov, but when support comes up that’s also bad. Labour is good without support

Starmer’s taken over £100k in freebies.

Hardly “a few”.

RobinStrike · 12/10/2024 18:12

@PinkFruitbat I don't like the amount of freebies that Starmer has taken but it would be helpful to know how many Cameron took, or Johnson-outside of his wallpaper and holidays. Because he is only compared with current MPs and not previous PMs or even previous Tory ministers who are no longer in Parliament it's a bit of an unfair comparison. Cameron and Clegg also had suits bought for them see the podcast "How to win an election" with Danny Finkelstein, Peter Mandelson and Polly McKenzie (who the quote was from-worked at the time for Clegg). There is also a difference between being at an England match representing the govt and going to Taylor Swift as a freebie. Not all are the same in my view.

What about Alli’s No 10 pass, crony appointments, nepotism, a slum landlord who broke rules he himself introduced and - my favourite - a Covent Garden penthouse comically justified as a revision aid?

I leave out Labour’s vehement opposition to removing WFA a year ago and the caustic criticism of Tories using private jets that got forgotten as soon as Labour starting using them…because those come under the headings of ‘dishonesty’ and ‘hypocrisy’ instead.

And I'm not a Labour voter, but I can clearly see the double standards in how you and others treat Labour's actions compared to the Tories'.

As far as I know, Starmer hasn't broken any rules in this regard and has simply followed the status quo. Millionaire donors have been buying access to Downing Street for years, but that wasn’t sleaze 5 years ago, last year or even four months ago. Why is it suddenly considered sleaze now? Hell, Starmer isn't even the worst 'offender' when it comes to donations, with Jenrick, Badenoch and Cleverly all having recieved significantly higher gifts than him but there's nothing being said about that of course.

And yes, I would absolutely say that things like Partygate, failing to declare financial interests in companies set to profit from government policy you're voting on, funneling public money into businesses connected to your wife, girlfriend, or friends, and having to remove / expel eight sitting MPs over accusations or convictions of sexual misconduct are far worse examples of sleaze than anything Labour has shown in their first 100 days.

Maybe they'll prove to be just as bad, time will tell, but what's beyond doubt is that posters like you are holding labour to significantly higher standards than you held the Tories to.

Millionaires can’t buy security access to Downing street. Once it was found out by the press, it was removed. I’m astounded you not only think this is normal practice but see no issue with it.

They are already just as bad. This is the first 100 days and it’s already a disaster. It will only get worse. This is the so called honeymoon period.

You leave out Labour's opposition to removing the WFA, and I'll leave out the Tories' dismissal of their concerns as "disingenuous scaremongering."

All the examples you mentioned reflect badly on those Labour MPs and the party itself. I have no problem calling out poor or criminal behavior, hypocrisy, or dishonesty from any MP or party, including the one I actually support

But Tories just can't seem to admit, even for a moment, that their party has done anything wrong. You’ll never see a Tory concede that their party has made mistakes; it’s always, "But Labour…" And they never hold their own party to the same standards they expect from others.

The "freebie" scandal is the perfect example, for 14 years Tories have been accepting donations, gifts, freebies and even actively touting themselves out to the highest bidder, yet the Tory faithful have defended them in every instance. Yet the second Labour do the same it becomes diabolical, dishonest, sleaze, etc.

It must be nice to sit in judgment of other parties and hold them to standards you'd never expect from your own.

I can’t speak for all Tories, obviously, but I will readily admit that they got things wrong and did sleazy things.

What I find so objectionable, though, is Labour’s self-righteousness in campaigning against greed and cronyism and then doing it themselves. People really don’t like hypocrisy.

I’m judging Starmer on the lofty standards he claims to meet. A government of service, a government without sleaze. Blah blah blah.

He has been shown to be a sanctimonious hypocrite taking all those gifts and freebies.

Any civil servant and most employees would be sacked for such behaviour. He also seems to duck out of paying tax on these. Again not the same rules as everyone else.

Yes of course Johnson, Cameron were dreadful. And sleazy. But they aren’t under the spotlight now. Starmer is.

I didn't say security access, I said access, or do you really think companies like The Phoenix Partnership, PPE Medpro and Infosys just happened to win hundreds of millions of pounds of government contracts because they were the best?

I think me and you have very different definitions when it comes to disaster. I'm sure since we managed to get through 14 years of actual sleaze and scandal while the Tories asset stripped the country, we'll survive one rare security pass and a few gifted dresses.

What sleaze are you referring to? Surely not totally above board, properly declared gifts?
You (and I) may think they shouldn’t be allowed, but they are. No sleaze.

Yerdawasasausagemaker · 12/10/2024 17:16

Labour said they’d bring the price of energy bills down. They said they’d use home grown energy.

Bills are rising, the energy minister flew to South America for a net zero conference and is now planking on importing energy from Korea and Afghanistan and investing in ridiculous energy policies that will make us poorer. But the rich (green lobby) richer. None of which will help the environment but they need a Trojan horse to make it palatable. The cost of energy is going to be astronomical.

Just because someone criticises Labour (on a thread about their - frankly dismal - performance in their first 100 days in GOVERNMENT) doesn’t mean they are a Tory. Student politics eh?

You thought they could sort issues with energy in 100 days, most of which was some form of parliamentary recess? Really?

Disappointing so far. Drama llama Starmer. I’be not been a Labour voter, but I had hoped to be impressed and maybe vote Labour for the first time next time. I really thought they’d be doing better at this early stage.

Look, I agree that the gifts situation needs review. He hasn’t broken the rules as they stand though, and hasn’t received as many gifts as, for example, Johnson did. Plus he’s not tried to hide them. They are properly declared.
