whoever you voted for, what are your thoughts after the First 100 Days?
I didn’t vote for Labour, but I was quite excited in their first few weeks as Keir got his head down and I was excited fir change.

Now I just feel deflated. Same old….freebiegate, nitpicking, infighting. A bit depressing really.

i don’t even think there was a decent alternative really….and that’s even more depressing!!!!!

This is one of those classic threads where I read a load of drivel, clock the username (you again!) and exit stage left.

I think cutting the WHA was necessary but was done wrong as there will still be those who need it. However the state pension is set to rise.

I like what they've done regarding their changes to labour rules, some great stuff there.

They've scrapped the Rwanda scheme thank god, some sense at last.

I don't like the fact that we're providing weapons or military assistance to Israel. They took too long to call for a ceasefire and Starmer's attitude at the beginning was diabolical.

I'm glad the strikes have been sorted and thought the riots were dealt with well.

I don't like the changes they're bringing in regarding benefits such as checking accounts and cutting them for those with disabilities.

They're spending a lot of time putting out fires eg the prison crisis.

I find it sickening that given the lack of investment over the last 14 years and the state of vital infrastructure and public services that the right wing press are scaremongering regarding the upcoming budget. Tories are scurrying around terrified they'll have to pay more tax while the country is a complete shambles. They want all the benefits but not to contribute towards it. That's the legacy of Thatcherism for you.

Rummly · 12/10/2024 13:15

It’s been a runaway success!

[Morgan, I’ve posted what you told me to. Can I go now? The other Labour PR underlings have gone to the pub to bitch about Rayner and Lammy. I always seem to be left here on weekends boosting Labour on Mumsnet. It doesn’t seem fair.]

I’m looking forward to the realisation by the people that voted for them that they are going to be significantly poorer.

It isn’t true that anybody with any great amount of money will be poorer. It just isn’t! We have ways to prevent our money being taken away via IHT. VAT on school fees will make no significant difference to our standard of living. It will to the parents of kids that scrimp and work second jobs killing themselves to give their kids a good education but hey fuck them right! The kids can go to the local sink school where they will be bullied to death for coming from a private school. CGT increases on rental properties? No problem. I’ll just put rents up to cover the lost income. The illusion that labour is going to punish the wealthy is nothing more than that. We will be ok whatever. At least under a conservative government those that work hard and try to get on in life aren’t punished for doing so.

Im from a working class northern pit village. My parents worked their arses off to get me where I am and I’ve done the same. Social mobility for those that are willing to work is really important in a functioning economy. Labour are trying their best to stop that.

We may be in a similar financial bracket though our kids have left private school. You are clearly more savvy than us! We can’t see a way to avoid IHT and CGT and rent increases will not cover the mess left by Truss so we will lost money on our rental property. Really not looking forward to the budget. But I don’t expect sympathy!

Oh look.
Another post by Tory Central Office.

I never understand why people say this stuff. It’s been on the news that Starmer has been asked about his first 100 days. It’s not unusual then to have a thread to discuss this too. Why do you think it’s from Tory HQ?

midgetastic · 12/10/2024 13:31

I guess because every day there is a new thread knocking the government ? And generally rather weakly ?

But there have always been loads of anti-Tory threads. Were they written by Labour HQ?

Ohnobackagain · 12/10/2024 13:49

@Iwishicouldflyhigh what is clear to me is, while ideally people wouldn’t accept freebies, gifts and bend rules on second homes, it’s a cross-party thing. The laws should be tightened to make it impossible to do stuff that is currently legal but most of us may view as morally ‘wrong’. Personally I’d accept nothing even if nobody would find out, but standards and morals vary. It’s too short a time to judge the new govt, regardless of how you voted, but a few individuals haven’t made it easy for Sir Keir, that’s for sure.

Maybe some think mn should just be pro Labour but looking at other commentary it’d be very much out of step if so

So far, off the top of my head, the two main things are cancelling the Rwanda plan and the reforms to Ofsted. Good moves both.
I'm sure there are many more I could mention.

What’s great about their actual approach instead?

Smash the gangs etc

Didimum · 12/10/2024 14:04

Voted Labour. Doom and gloom has been too strong but I’m really happy with them so far. Very happy.

Tiredalwaystired · 12/10/2024 14:23

Broadly still feeling relief. Not set me alight but it’s only a couple of Mis steps so far from my perspective. So much better than the previous incumbents that just left me in a constant state of horror.

Getting rid of universal cold weather payments in itself is not a bad thing but the bar has been set too low. This needs to be rectified.

On the other hand they have made excellent advisory appointments like James Timpson and they squashed the riots very quickly (given that one was planned minutes from my house this meant a lot). Glad they also stopped the NHS strikes as it was ending up costing the country more both financially and in terms of the welfare of the nation to keep them going.

I also wish they would be more upbeat but maybe we can’t be?

Budget will be a big test.

PinkFruitbat · 12/10/2024 15:03

Starmer is a sanctimonious hypocrite, and Reeves has a massive chip on her shoulder which is being revealed in the winter fuel and private school fees VAT. Nasty nasty politics of envy and spite.

High earners like me will get milked even harder (High Earners Not Yet Rich - HENRYs). I know several who are/have left the country.

IsTheOffDutyDoneYet · 12/10/2024 15:07

iamtheblcksheep · 12/10/2024 10:24

I didn’t vote for them but I’m really enjoying the realisation of their voters that they aren’t what they said they were going to be.

Looking forward to the budget where no matter what they do I’ll be ok, yet those that voted for them are likely be penalised.

Edited

Aren’t you just delightful.

Why have they left the UK?

PandoraSox · 12/10/2024 15:08

Why have they left the UK?

For a better lifestyle.

Dubai, Singapore, USA, Germany!

Better pay, fairer taxes, more upbeat.

UK is in a depressing death spiral. Nothing works; success is hated, people are resentful. Why would you want to raise a family in that environment?

I don't blame them, life under the Tories has been awful.

Ie that’s why they’re leaving. I have seen a few posts along the same lines

Apparently this is a bit of a myth that this is common - main reason being because they really enjoy living in/near London and all the other places you mention don't really compare

Dubai and Singapore in particular are 'cultural deserts'

Definitely cross party which is why tories have been so quiet about it. But Labour /KS was soooo pious so now with freebiegate it comes across as so hypocritical.

Voted Labour, don’t regret it.

It’s not been a great start but a lot is presentational and relates to the (incredibly poor) handling of bumps in the road. However, hopefully that will get ironed out.

And given the Tories have just committed political suicide, they’ll probably have just cracked out the champagne.

yes very much so. Labour are very honest that they seek to punish me and my peers; who already pay mountains of tax each year already. It was already bad under the Tories…

Beezknees · 12/10/2024 15:32

Voted Labour and I'm happy so far.

Shakeoffyourchains · 12/10/2024 15:33

Voted SNP (no other choice) but happy enough with how things are going.

It's been refreshing having a government that doesn't lurch from one genuine scandal to another every 24 hours (I don't count the very tiresome attempts at creating mountains out of molehills from the tory defence brigade as scandals).

Hopefully after the budget, they'll finally realise labour have 5 years in power and we'll get a break from their incredibly selective memories and even more selective outrage for a while.
