Not to help catch a stray/escaped dog! Now it’s my fault it’s been injured apparently!

Someone’s dog keeps escaping and for some reason it kept making its way into my garden. It had been dodging cars apparently and being a nuisance. Regularly have people knocking asking is it mine.

Two weeks ago someone saw it run into my garden and they were banging on the door . I answered (I was WFH and busy) and they were demanding to be allowed into the garden to keep hold of the dog till the warden could get there. I said no. Wait till it goes back out again (I didn’t want someone I don’t know in my house / garden) then catch it and secure it .

Ive since got the gap fixed and the dog can’t get in anymore. Haven’t seen it

Had a knock on the door today (same person) saying the dog had been hit by a car and they’d had to take it to a vet and how it all could have been avoided had I allowed them access and they hoped I was happy with having it on my conscience. So i just closed the door as they were still talking which made them shout and bang on the door???

Im not the irresponsible dog owner so it’s not my fault !

I haven’t read the whole thread but it seems to me it could be a scam where someone comes into a house on the pretence they have seen a stray animal. I wouldn’t let anyone in either.

curious79 · 10/10/2024 14:22

I'm surprised so many people think you should have opened up your home for a TOTAL STRANGER to hold onto a dog (that was repeatedly escaping) during your working day. Absolutely fu** them and everyone who thinks you should have. It is the dog owners responsibility who maybe now will actually take control

Look right yes ultimately it's dog owner fault i have 2 dogs it would be my fault but if I knew my dog had got on someone's garden abd they didn't try to call me as my number is on their collar stitched on or allow a guy to get dog then I woukd be a bit upset. If u saw dog was in your back garden why not allow the dude to do that. This wories for safety shit all the time is madness I say that as a woman not all me are gonna kill you

Edited

No, all men aren't going to kill you. Although most women are aware that most men could. And the ones who demand access to your home rather than waiting by a hole in a fence and then come ranting and raving at your door like they are allowed to tell you off - aren't in the good egg section of the safe men-crazy men, venn diagram.

You would honestly let a random man into your house when you were there alone?

I would, if I knew there was a dog in my garden that he was trying to get to.
Under other circumstances, no.

The 'lost puppy' analogy isn't a good one-if I knew the puppy probably didn't exist then I wouldn't let anyone in. But in this case, there was a dog.

mumtotwo11 · 10/10/2024 14:23

I don't think you are to blame.

As you said, the man could have waited by the gap for the dog to come out ... I assume it did at some point!

I wouldn't be happy letting some random into my house!

The dog has escaped numerous times from what you say on your post so it is entirely the owners fault for not securing their own dog 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hole in fence might be connected to another garden might not be to path outside he does have a point if she knew dog was in her garden

I would have maybe gone out and got the dog or told the man I'd usher it back through the hole maybe?

ByMerryKoala · 10/10/2024 14:25

No, the op told him. The hole in the fence was to her garden and to wait by it if he wanted to grab the dog. This waa established. He knew all this at the outset.

namechangetheworld · 10/10/2024 14:25

BarrioQueen · 10/10/2024 14:10

You could have kept the dog safe yourself. Poor innocent animal. You didnt need to let a random person in but you could have kept it safe.

It was safe, contained in her garden. The man should have waited outside the gap in the fence to grab it when it came out. OP didn't need to get involved in any way.

I certainly wouldn't be fucking about trying to catch a random, probably nervous, dog roaming around in my garden. God knows what temperament it has. I'm not getting bitten because some idiots can't keep their animal from escaping.

CharlotteLucas3 · 10/10/2024 14:28

It's obviously not your fault and even if the dog had been returned on that occasion it would have escaped again anyway.

However, you could have just grabbed the dog yourself and handed it to the person. I lived next door to a dog that escaped almost every day and I always returned him even though I ended up covered in scratches.

People should always look out for lost dogs and children. People are silly though...I once rescued two gorgeous golden retrievers that had got out when a delivery driver had left the gate open. I can't imagine going to work all day and leaving the gate unlocked but some people are very relaxed about safety.

Idontevenknowmyname · 10/10/2024 14:29

And this is why people don’t answer their doors. I’m with you op, this is ridiculous.
I don’t work from home, so if an animal ran into my garden I would have no idea. No one would answer the door and they would have to deal with getting the animal another way. None of this is your issue, and I would be inclined to get a ring doorbell if you haven’t already got one, to keep an eye on the nutters who live in the area.
I would absolutely not have this on my conscience at all. People are getting more entitled, especially over dogs that frankly need to be controlled better.

Great answer my point earlier though is we now live in a world where folks don't bother. Listened to a podcast dude tries to jump in front of train and no one on platform did fuck all they starred at him having mental anguish in london yet one giy did help him and no one asked after if ok it's a bizarre world now

You had a chance to help.

You chose not to. Own it.

I would also choose not to
I ain't taking time out my day to deal with a random dog

Well no because the bloke didn't want to simply get the dog..

He wanted to wait for the dog warden to get it.

She was at work ffs. Has nobody suggesting she go outside and mess about cajoling a dog through a fence/through her house for an indeterminate amount of time ever had a job where they monitor your productivity? Or get penalised for missing important meetings? Or need to respond to messages quickly? Does everybody think wfh means work when it suits other people's pets?

ByMerryKoala · 10/10/2024 14:33

Definitely a nutter.

What would you call a person who came to your home to tell you off?

I love the hypocrisy that you called someone else out for describing a man who shouted and hammered in a door a nutter but you're calling another poster names...
