Not to help catch a stray/escaped dog! Now it’s my fault it’s been injured apparently!

Someone’s dog keeps escaping and for some reason it kept making its way into my garden. It had been dodging cars apparently and being a nuisance. Regularly have people knocking asking is it mine.

Two weeks ago someone saw it run into my garden and they were banging on the door . I answered (I was WFH and busy) and they were demanding to be allowed into the garden to keep hold of the dog till the warden could get there. I said no. Wait till it goes back out again (I didn’t want someone I don’t know in my house / garden) then catch it and secure it .

Ive since got the gap fixed and the dog can’t get in anymore. Haven’t seen it

Had a knock on the door today (same person) saying the dog had been hit by a car and they’d had to take it to a vet and how it all could have been avoided had I allowed them access and they hoped I was happy with having it on my conscience. So i just closed the door as they were still talking which made them shout and bang on the door???

Im not the irresponsible dog owner so it’s not my fault !

They are idiots. If my dog escaped once (they can’t because I make sure my garden is secure) I would make sure it NEVER happened again.

thoonerismspread · 10/10/2024 12:35

YABU. Owner at fault as pp says however that dog was in a vulnerable position and you could have helped and chose not to.

The only way in and out of the garden is through the house I didn’t want a random person then a dog warden and they could have been hours ! I was working

They’re idiots and I feel sorry for the dog having such dumb owners. It’s their fault it gets hurt and they have no business taking out their guilt on you.

username3678 · 10/10/2024 12:38

Why didn't you either let the warden catch the dog or report the dog? It was in danger and dangerous if it was running in the road.

Myas · 10/10/2024 12:38

If they were asking for access to put the dog on lead and take it out of your garden I think yabu but to just stay with the dog for an unknown amount of time and then turning up shouting abuse weeks after the fact? You were right not to let them stay clearly if that’s their temperament

Procrastinates · 10/10/2024 12:39

Not unreasonable at all. I love how people are blaming you and not the crap owners who allowed their dog to get out multiple times!

OnlyOneNotOnWeightLossDrugsInTheVillage · 10/10/2024 12:40

YANBU, but not very pleasant about it and I'm glad you aren't my neighbour (though why couldn't they coax back through the hole it went in?).

MintTwirl · 10/10/2024 12:40

Obviously it isn’t your fault but could you have blocked the gap the dog was getting in with a temporary fix and left it in the garden until the dog warden came? That’s what k would have done rather than let a random person in or just leaving the dog to get out again.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 10/10/2024 12:41

So not the owner? Someone wanting to hold it until a dog warden got there?

You're being blamed by someone who isn't the owner, who thinks you should have assisted with the dog warden?

I don't see how that would have prevented anything. The dog warden (if the even showed up) would surely have just handed the dog back to the owner with a mild rebuke, which would probably have been ignored.

Laughable to suggest this is your fault. It's the fault of a shit dog owner.

Whyherewego · 10/10/2024 12:41

People are so unreasonable! What if you were unwell or vulnerable or working on something super sensitive. Of course you don't have to have strangers traipsing through your house. The owners are at fault!

zeitweilig · 10/10/2024 12:42

It's not your fault that the dog escaped however it might have been helpful to let it remain contained in your garden for a short while.

ReadWithScepticism · 10/10/2024 12:42

It was unreasonable of the person to show up after the event and guilt-trip you, but I think you should have let them in to try and get hold of the dog safely.

Fleur240 · 10/10/2024 12:43

I feel this is what’s wrong with society… this not my problem attitude. What happened to being kind and helpful? No the dog is not your responsibility and no it’s not your fault it got injured but you could have helped that person and therefore the dog to get the care it needed!

Backtoblack87 · 10/10/2024 12:44

YABU. Yes owners are idiots but you could have helped. I’d have felt awful not helping and it getting injured. Who cares if a stranger and warden come through your house!!

Yes they wanted access and to just stay in the garden till the warden came I asked are they coming now and they said it could be a couple of hours !

Exactly what I think!

notmyproblems · 10/10/2024 12:47

no it wasn’t the owner just someone who wanted to help

I’d be the same. I wouldn’t want a strange man (or woman) in my garden for 2 hours with a dog that’s not mine, especially being at home and I have young DC.

Honestly OP give no more thought to it.

I suspect this so called helpful person would have also shouted at you had they been injured or bitten in attempting to catch the dog.

I also strongly suspect they didn't shout at the actual owner.

JubileeJuice · 10/10/2024 12:52

Are people missing that the OP was AT WORK?

I work from home at the moment and absolutely couldn't drop everything for a random dog whose owners can't control it (and I have two myself!).

They sound awful, OP.
