Not to help catch a stray/escaped dog! Now it’s my fault it’s been injured apparently!

Someone’s dog keeps escaping and for some reason it kept making its way into my garden. It had been dodging cars apparently and being a nuisance. Regularly have people knocking asking is it mine.

Two weeks ago someone saw it run into my garden and they were banging on the door . I answered (I was WFH and busy) and they were demanding to be allowed into the garden to keep hold of the dog till the warden could get there. I said no. Wait till it goes back out again (I didn’t want someone I don’t know in my house / garden) then catch it and secure it .

Ive since got the gap fixed and the dog can’t get in anymore. Haven’t seen it

Had a knock on the door today (same person) saying the dog had been hit by a car and they’d had to take it to a vet and how it all could have been avoided had I allowed them access and they hoped I was happy with having it on my conscience. So i just closed the door as they were still talking which made them shout and bang on the door???

Im not the irresponsible dog owner so it’s not my fault !

I'm wondering whether the dog is actually a stray rather than one that keeps escaping and had been loose for 2 weeks at least now. What makes you think it keeps escaping?

I don't understand why you didn't go put the dog on the lead if you could though? Assuming it wasn't a XL Bully or something, alternatively why didn't the rando wait by the hole while you chased it out the garden? You're being silly to suggest they had to stand in your garden for two hours to wait for the dog warden, they could wait for him at their own house. You sound a bit weird tbh OP.

coldcallerbaiter · 10/10/2024 13:07

No to letting anyone in your house. He could be a criminal. Could you even see the dog? Someone can stand in my garden, as long as there is no access to the house and I would keep an eye on them. But that wasn’t the situation, access was via house - no way.

YABU. Owner at fault as pp says however that dog was in a vulnerable position and you could have helped and chose not to.

Totally disagree. What if op hasn't been at home?

Owner is totally at fault.

And what does this post make you?

Wtf, calling someone "shitty person" for not allowing stranger with a dog story into her house and garden. If he wanted to help the dog, he could had waited at the hole.

Irresponsible human being - no thought for helping others at all. Karma mate.

Karma mate 🤣🤣

no it wasn’t the owner just someone who wanted to help

So what was the problem with him sitting in your garden? What bothers you about that?

Then she wouldn't have been able to help.
But she was.
And could've.

A strange man knocks at your door and says he needs help looking for a lost puppy, can he come in?
I think some posters skipped the stranger danger talk at primary school 😂

Edited

Seems that way! I hope none of them are passing on this sort of advice to any kids they have.

namechangetheworld · 10/10/2024 13:09

Not a chance would I have let a stranger into my house or garden. The blame lies fully with the idiotic owners who can't stop their dog from escaping.

I wonder why a lone woman would be bothered about letting a strange man into her home...

No it doesn't. We don't all have time to fix other people's mistakes. Owner should have looked after it better.

Paperchase100 · 10/10/2024 13:10

phoenixrosehere · 10/10/2024 12:59

Considering how the man acted towards OP , OP did right not to have allowed them in.

No one seems to pick up on the fact crazy strange man shouted at OP, exactly

WithoutACherryOnTheTop · 10/10/2024 13:10

Why are you even asking? You must know you were unkind but you clearly don't give a damn. Own it.

ChiffandBipper · 10/10/2024 13:10

I wouldn't want a random strange man coming into my house in the middle of the working day for an unknown length of time. Especially one who seems prone to bursts of rage!

His anger now is totally misplaced. Whatever happened in your garden has very little bearing on what happened 2 weeks later.

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 10/10/2024 13:08

You would honestly let a random man into your house when you were there alone?

phoenixrosehere · 10/10/2024 13:12

OrdsallChord · 10/10/2024 13:02

Definitely not! OP had no way of knowing if that bloke was safe, and the fact that he's come to her door mouthing off in this way indicates she was right not to let him in. Berating a woman he doesn't know and then shouting at her when she closes the door?! Fucking weirdo.

Exactly!

If something were to have happen to OP, there would be several posters questioning and victim blaming her about allowing some random man into her home while she was alone.

OtherS · 10/10/2024 13:13

Well, I'd personally do what I could to help an animal - or person - in need, especially if what would help wouldn't even inconvenience me. But then I'm not a crappy person. I also try not to pointlessly ostracise my neighbours. Just hope you never need any help from them...

DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS!

*unless they say there are dogs involved, in which case invite them in, get in the their van, go with them to help them look and BE NICE!

She was working at that time, so she didn't have time to run after the dog.

We don't know the dog size, but not everyone has a lead at their house and is willing to touch random animals.

Maddy70 · 10/10/2024 13:14

Why didn't you let them into your garden? That was a really shitty thing to do

Its not your fault that the dog escaped but you could have easily enabled its safety and you didn't

I suggested he wait there by the fence but he just wanted to stay in my garden waiting for the warden

OP posts:
InvisibleBuffy · 10/10/2024 13:14

I find it ridiculous that OP should have let a strange man into her house and then let him hang about in her garden for potentially hours while he waited for the dog warden, who he would presumably let in too, all while OP is trying to work from home and can't even monitor the situation.
And he wasn't even the owner?
I like dogs but people lose their absolute minds when it comes to them. This wasn't unreasonable in the slightest.
If strange man was that worried about the dog, he could have waited by the gap until the dog warden turned up. He has no right to demand entry or feel entitled to go into a strange woman house.

Without sounding mean I’d put my safety and my DC safety first before a dog that’s not mine.

Unless it was a neighbour that I had spoken to I wouldn’t let anyone stranger or not into my garden home alone. I’d be happy for a dog rescue company to come in to retrieve dog, but no way would I let some stranger off the street in.

If that makes me unkind then I’d take it on the chin over letting a stranger in my home.
