To not feel very sorry for Rebekah Vardy

This Rebekah Vardy Colleen Rooney business has ended up costing a huge amount of money. Now RV has to pay costs of £1.6 million. Total madness. Why did she do it. Obviously thought she'd win. The phone falling into the sea. Hmm how convenient.

Except Colleen had no choice. If she hadn’t gone to court, Rebekah would have got a judgment in default and probably massive damages. Rebekah was only willing to drop the case in return for Colleen publicly admitting she was wrong (which she wasn’t) and paying Rebekah (not a charity which is what Colleen offered as a settlement) large damages.

Would you be happy to publicly grovel, tell lies to benefit and pay shedloads of cash to someone who treated you the way Rebekah treated Colleen? I wouldn’t.

But Rebekah doesn't think her life has been ruined. She still has lots and lots of her husband's massive salary to waste on court proceedings. She still maintains her innocence. She was unpopular before the first trial. Everything that has made her unpopular has been of her own doing.

RV brought all of this on herself. It was utter madness to take CR to court.
Although others have pursued the same path and lost big time. Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitken to name just two other arrogant people who believed their lies would win a court battle.

This. Colleen had multiple people on her private instagram, most of whom had followed her for years. Not a single one has ever sold photos or stories on her.

RV was in a similar position in life to Colleen (both the subject of tabloid scrutiny due to their husbands, both mega wealthy as a result of their marriages) and Colleen thought she could trust her.

Also, Colleen had never been betrayed by a friend before and I would guess wasn’t looking out for it. She and Wayne seem to have good taste in friends - even childhood friends who are much less well off than them - none of them talk to the press, ever.

If Bob Jones on £30,000 a year doesn’t sell stories, she had no reason to think RV with a family income of £5 million would. She didn’t think of the fact that RV was trying to build a media ‘brand’ and would hand over stories in return for good press on herself.

I think RV saw herself as superior to CR . She thought wrong and underestimated CR who came out of this mess on top . CR offered RV mediation before court to sort this out . If I was RV I would have maintained a dignified silence and let my charity work speak for itself .

I worked at a chippy when I was at school and everyone I worked with showed a lot more decorum, class and integrity than Rebecca Vardy.

I'm a lawyer and in most cases this is true, but in this case it is clear that CR is the resounding winner, in all senses. The scale of RV's idiocy in relation to this case is staggering. She will have been advised by her legal team throughout the case of the risk of losing, and all of the related costs risks. Why her husband agreed to fund such a doomed endeavour is anyone's guess. She must wear the trousers in that household.

I don't know. I feel like she's played the ultimate game of "fuck around and find out".

I really do struggle to feel sorry for people with more money than sense.

Just watching Wagspiracy: Vardy v Rooney from 2023 which I hadn't seen. It was on BBC3, now on U. It talks about Caroline Watt wanted to make Vardy the biggest Wag in the world (for money obviously) It's interesting how it all worked.

Fair enough - I thought as it went on that it was increasingly obvious there was no case but I think you’re right that this is probably down to RV’s behaviour as it went on.

I know next to nothing about football wage, but yesterday I was feeling ill and decided I wanted to watch something easy and ended up watching the CR documentary which was unexpectedly compelling. Having previously known very little about Colleen Rooney before this I must say I was surprisingly very impressed by her. It's clear that she absolutely makes Rooney. I admired the way she runs her house and organises everything for her family like a tight ship, all hands on, I expected a nanny or housekeeper. I also liked her commitment to family whilst maintaining a down to earth persona, at the beginning you could see she deals with the intrusive paps in a very poised, unflappable manner.

That Vardy woman by contrast came across as thoroughly nasty, jealous, envious and spiteful all whilst feigning friendship. It shocking to think someone can be duplicitous to that extent and then keep doubling down.

However, whilst I completely sympathised with CR and felt her actions were totally correct, ultimately, I felt most sorry for Vardy. It's clear CR comes from a good, solid family, with a very loving, stable upbringing. Her parents are impressive salt-of-the-earth types. Her mother looks like a strong force of nature. She has only ever dated WR and not had to go through a string of bad men before finding love. Then he made millions! She has everything. She appears to have had it easy (from the outside).

By contrast, I don't think Vardy has had the same positive experiences in life (especially with regards to men) and so she has had to scrabble and claw her way to success, and I can understand that mindset of finding it hard to care about those who have so much more than you ever had or will have. To her, it's just a few stories and it's not taking anything away from CR and CR is hoarding success and doesn't want to share or is jealous of someone maybe becoming bigger than her! She needs serious long-term therapy. I wonder if her marriage will last and if she realises she's sabotaging it.

Also was surprised to find myself liking WR!!

I’m pretty sure Colleen had the lifestyle Rebecca married Jamie V for literally decades earlier. I also get the impression the money is a bonus to Colleen’s relationship rather than the whole point (and marrying Jamie just being the route to the cash) as with RV.

Jamie will be dumped when he stops earning as much. But only if she's found another mug man to take his place. She's too old to bag another footballer now.

I read earlier that Coleen was on the cover of Vogue. Vardy has a column in The Sun. That says all you need to know about how far apart they are.
