To not feel very sorry for Rebekah Vardy

This Rebekah Vardy Colleen Rooney business has ended up costing a huge amount of money. Now RV has to pay costs of £1.6 million. Total madness. Why did she do it. Obviously thought she'd win. The phone falling into the sea. Hmm how convenient.

RV needs to start accepting who she is, and stop trying to prove something to the “world”

@Yancy I think you’d be surprised. You’ve got a wife out spending money like water, she’s probably insisted all of her kids have private schooling they’ve probably got a mortgage then add in international travel where RV insist they all travel in first, hairdressers and make up artist on tap. They’ve probably bought family members houses. Plus the undoubtedly numerous aesthetic treatments RV has.. It never fails to astonish me how many people are on the average celebrities payroll if you include all of the above plus agents fees etc. And don’t forget the ones who are taken in by investors who were them to sink money into tax efficient schemes that end up being nothing of the sort. All of these costs coming from people who came from relatively normal backgrounds. They simply don’t spend money in the way that most of us would - most women don’t have a clutch of Hermes handbags and the like! Their spending would be more aligned with lottery winners than the average prudent person

Let's not forget that during the original Wagatha Christie case Rebekah Vardy was turning up for Court each day wearing Chanel, Prada etc whilst Coleen, although she did wear v expensive clothes sometimes, also wore Zara on more than one occasion.

viques · 09/10/2024 12:52

There was a discussion on Radio 4 yesterday about owning up to mistakes, and RV was mentioned. The consensus was that she is monetising her infamy and pursuing the expenses thing because it puts followers on her social media accounts which ( somehow, I don’t understand how) earns her money.

If you are that desperate for money that you are prepared to look more like an idiot than you actually are then fair enough, but personally I would rather go out and get a proper job rather than proving to everyone that “ Yes, my name is Rebecca, and I really am as thick as mince.”

Zilla1 · 09/10/2024 12:54

HNRTT but one school of thought is that RV's actions, including gaining this additional personal publicity regarding the costs hearings is part of a deliberate plan to maintain and boost her profile and revenue model as an 'influencer', seller of press stories and whatever TV work she has in train, separate to and lasting beyond her husband's football career. It might be incorrect but I read it was RV rather than CR who sought to trademark 'Wagatha Christie'. I have no understanding of her income from her press, social media presence and influencer activities but it might be more deliberate and successful than some people think.

Zilla1 · 09/10/2024 12:55

partly cross posted with @viques

As Prince Philip once said paraphrasing a well-known phrase "It is better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it"

itsnotabouthepasta · 09/10/2024 12:59

Jamie will be bankrupt within five years. I would bet on it.

he hasn’t played long enough at a top level to have an infinite wealth, not like Wayne Rooney. He’s got a year or two tops left on his career. He might move into coaching but I doubt he would be anywhere close to making mega sums that will keep Rebekah in the lifestyle she thinks she’s entitled to.

if he was sensible, he would have invested carefully, but with the amount of legal fees that RV is racking up, that cash will soon be gone. It sounds as it CR legal team could consider a defamation claim against her now for what she said about the law firm. That’s twice now in the space of a year that she’s been told off by the courts for lying. Her influencer career would be over because what brand would want her representing them?

Zilla1 · 09/10/2024 12:59

But imagine if there's now more money in confirming ones fool-status than leaving uncertainty.

Lawyers who can only stay in expensive hotels or book at short notice, and whose costs seemingly cannot be challenged, is a wrong that does not make things right.

The laws on defamation are a rich person's thing that in many cases (not this one) are used to bully people into silence.

Of course their costs can be challenged. That is precisely the process that they are going through at the moment. I'm quite sure the expensive hotel charge, if it is real, is going to get struck out.

I don't think she could have foreseen the £1.6m bill. Somebody told me they didn't have that sort of money. Not to waste on ridiculous court cases anyway.

Edited

Yes, she could. Her solicitors would have warned her that this was precisely what she was risking. Defamation cases are notoriously really expensive for the loser.

I don't see how...she hasn't posted anything on insta since July? I'm no influencer but I think you do have to post content to do this. She's toxic to any TV channel and as pp have said, why on earth would any brand want to work with a proven liar? I mean, whenever I see a member of Towie promoting anything I usually think 'yeah, right of course it does x,y,z'... I'd think even less of any product/service if RV was posting about it!

Absolutely this.

A fool and his money is soon parted...

Pinkandbluesocks · 09/10/2024 13:18

RV has just under 400k followers on instagram, I don't know about other socials. Google reckons people can charge about $10 per 1000 followers for a sponsored post. If that's vaguely true, and I have no idea, she'd be netting about £3500 a sponsored post. So a nice chunk of change, and I can see why she might do it given that Jamie's in his late 30s and doesn't really come off as the sort who's going to keep making loads of money afterwards in a successful management or punditry career. But their lifestyle must cost a lot more than that.

My guess, having never seen their bank accounts or anything like that, is they can afford it now. But Jamie's not earned the sort of Rooney level money that allows you not to worry about this kind of thing. And Colleen herself has been pretty successful. More random googling suggests she's made above £10 million from her WAG related activities. She might even be worth more than Jamie by herself!

Coruscations · 09/10/2024 13:18

But this time with even more of a legal bill after bringing yet another action. It’s like watching a gambler in a casino chase their losses. RV/JV will have had to pay into court before starting legal action.

This isn't a new action, it's the last stages of the original action with costs being assessed. They won't have had to pay into court any more than court fees before starting the original action.

Comefromaway · 09/10/2024 13:23

CR offered several out of court settlements which RV rejected so that will go against RV

ajandjjmum · 09/10/2024 13:24

A £5 million salary sounds great, but after tax it would only be half that, and £1.6 million in costs would leave them with less than £1 million to live on for the year. Poor lambs!!!

Comefromaway · 09/10/2024 13:26

£295 per night doesn't sound unreasonable for central London. Recently my student son was asked to travel to London last minute for some temporary work. The hotel was just over £200 per night including breakfast. It was nice but not posh, just happened to be within easy travelling distance of where he needed to be.

Maybe we should have a board for folk struggling along on £1m a year net. Seriously though it's quite a lot of money to lose even for them and they won't be pleased,

My choice of wording was poor. My point still stands though - they would have to have paid into court before the original trial started (so knew exactly what order they were in for) and had they settled the 90% of CR's legal bill their own legal bill would've paused and they would be done and dusted at the directed amount. However, in trying to save a few bob, they have accrued yet more fees from their own legal team poring over literally every line claimed for and of course will likely now have to pay for CR's team costs incurred in defending baseless claims. And now CR's firm may well decide to take action against RV and her team for defamation (and would be well placed to do so). All in all, nothing saved. As I said, like a gambler chasing a bad debt.

Oh I'm sure. Jamie is the main earner in that family and he's had quite a small number of peak earning years. His playing career isn't likely to go on for more than a couple of years, tops, and after that there are really no guarantees. So basically 10-12 years on top wages, in the best case scenario.

It's the sort of money that will leave you set for life if you're sensible, even with the 6 kids between them. But open ended, completely avoidable multi million pound legal bills are going to be a worry even on that income.

Yep. Look at Wes Brown. Wife spent money like it was going out of fashion. They are now divorced and he has declared bankruptcy.

Unless her lawyers value her as a repeat client. They’re presumably doing very well by repeatedly representing her….

I wonder what all JV’s teammates and their partners think of it all. It can’t be conducive to good team morale if his team mates daren’t make any comment on their family/home life in front of him for fear it will end up in the Sun.

Arraminta · 09/10/2024 13:42

She's nothing but a gobby, uneducated chav. Her inner circle of similarly gobby, uneducated chavs deluded her into thinking she had anything useful or interesting or intelligent to say. She clearly hadn't.

She looks and sounds like she should be working in a chip shop.

Wellingtonspie · 09/10/2024 13:43

Don’t forget Jamie’s child maintenance to his oldest child.

Also how did Lauryn or the papers get the texts from 5? Years ago from
Vardy who’s phone went ploop… can’t recover texts for the Colleen case but can get texts to get her spoon out for Lauryn v Annie.

Arraminta · 09/10/2024 13:48

And don't take me to task for being overly harsh. I sat on the same table as the Vardys at a charidee dinner not that long ago and believe me, I could have been a lot harsher.
