Taking an object to an interview

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:21

Okay, where do I start
I've just had a job interview confirmed and they've asked me to bring an object that best reflects my personality 😂
Never heard of this before
What does one bring? 🤔
Not strictly an AIBU but can I have some ideas please!

What hobbies do you have OP?

I have four kids so you know, I don't have any 😂 I used to enjoy the gym
I quite like live music, maybe an old gig ticket?

Edingril · 05/10/2024 09:29

I would take a suppository

Freydo · 05/10/2024 09:30

A book, a diy tool, a paintbrush, a letter, something sentimental you were given for being such a lovely person?

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 05/10/2024 09:31

Vibrator

Shows you're hard working, always buzzing about and keen to get stuck in.

Attelina · 05/10/2024 09:31

If it's a seasonal job in retail presumably Christmas they are possibly looking for someone gregarious who will communicate with the customers in a positive and friendly manner. They don't want someone quiet and shy.

I would bring something in that makes you appear as being outgoing.

That's if you really want the job.

Strawberriesand · 05/10/2024 09:31

A box of donuts or cupcakes and say because your sweet and thoughtful 😂

MasterBeth · 05/10/2024 09:31

SunnyHedgehog · 05/10/2024 09:26

Oh gosh- take a christmas tree decoration to indicate you need a seasonal job then give them a big nudge and a wink

Yes, they are just looking for someone with a bit of creativity and fun. All of you saying it's too difficult or revealing are being far too literal and unimaginative.

A Christmas decoration because "I just love Christmas. I think it's the most special time of year and everything about it makes me happy" is a perfect answer. They're not looking to drill into your deepest personal depths, they just want you to talk with enthusiasm about something.

Mmhmmn · 05/10/2024 09:31

Oh god. This nonsense would put me right off. Interviewers once asked what star sign I was 🙄. I’d take a cup of tea OP. The cup would have “Idiots” written on the bottom so they’d get a flash of it whenever I took a drink

Bribery - I like it 😂

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:32

I googled it and someone on a different forum said Lego bricks
And talk about how the different colours represent your skills

ShellFace · 05/10/2024 09:32

I'd take a bit of equipment from my sport- then I could talk about whichever positive qualities are relevant to the job....I'm fit, reliable, hardworking, part of a team etc etc

Gettingbysomehow · 05/10/2024 09:33

Not sure I'd get a motorbike into the interview room.

Freydo · 05/10/2024 09:34

I used to have a toy sabre toothed tiger that my DH said represented my work personality.

Maybe a helpful animal, sheepdog maybe. Loyal, rounds up customers.

And self-sufficient

SometimesCalmPerson · 05/10/2024 09:34

A piece of jewellery. Then make up some bullshit about how the clasp reflects your reliability and strength and the fancy bit represents your imagination/love of something or some other inspiring crap.

Don't do this. It's very odd! Gig tickets sounds perfect

Screamingabdabz · 05/10/2024 09:35

I would think about what skills they are looking for and match a narrative around whatever object you think you can authentically link it to.

LadyQuackBeth · 05/10/2024 09:35

Do you have an old fashioned address book? If friends are important to you this would show that.

Take off your watch and put it down, if your personality is liking to be busy.

A book important to you.

Don't do Lego in case other people have googled it too!

HoppityBun · 05/10/2024 09:36

Your purse / wallet. Like everyone else you’re working because you need the money

Freydo · 05/10/2024 09:36

An ex colleague brought some playmobile people to act out a scene. She didn’t get the job but she did get feedback saying how much they’d enjoyed her presentation.

Mmhmmn · 05/10/2024 09:36

RocketPanda · 05/10/2024 09:25

I'd bring one single grain of sand because that would be the measure of patience I'd have to deal with such bullshit.

You’re my kind of interviewee, @RocketPanda 😄

MasterBeth · 05/10/2024 09:36

IsitaHatOrACat · 05/10/2024 09:34

It's a perfectly reasonable answer that points towards a certain type of person - ordered and considered.

It's a better answer than "I brought Metallica tickets because I like Metallica."

Do you think? I thought it sounds perfect,
The post carried on to say how you can explain that you/the bricks are customizable depending on the task in hand

Same concept with a jigsaw puzzle I guess, to illustrate you are a good problem solver and fit in

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 05/10/2024 09:37

Given your self description I'd take in a toy Labrador 😂
