Taking an object to an interview

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:21

Okay, where do I start
I've just had a job interview confirmed and they've asked me to bring an object that best reflects my personality 😂
Never heard of this before
What does one bring? 🤔
Not strictly an AIBU but can I have some ideas please!

It's only a seasonal position
In a retail shop is all I'll say incase they find my thread 😬😂

I saw Tiger advertised recently....I can imagine they might have an interview like that?! I love the shop btw :)

onaroll · 06/10/2024 20:15

Oh, I’m so hoping you have an over gregarious dog to take with you 😏

Beautifulweeds · 06/10/2024 20:16

An axe and a creepy smile...

MellersSmellers · 06/10/2024 20:40

Oh fgs, I hate that kind of thing. As a PP said, brace yourself for the team meetings...
How about a plant or a fruit/vegetable that you've grown (or can claim to have grown!). Nurturing, reliable, wholesome, committed blah blah

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:29

I have four kids so you know, I don't have any 😂 I used to enjoy the gym
I quite like live music, maybe an old gig ticket?

This is a good one. Not sentimental but an interest or hobby.

I'm a friendly person, get on well with everyone, reliable, will gladly be over worked 😂

SALaw · 06/10/2024 21:11

Think of the attribute you want to highlight and find something for that

RudySundays · 06/10/2024 23:15

I was asked this in my interview for Topshop yeeeeears ago! I took a bra and said I was uplifting and supportive 🤣 got the job as well!

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 06/10/2024 23:17

Well sounds like someone has read a book on "quirky interview techniques " 🙄

Take a manicure set so you can use your time effectively while being interviewed.

Or bake a cake. The promise of baked goods coming their way might sway it.

glittercunt · 06/10/2024 23:40

Had this in Tesco group interview about 26 years ago, we had to go out to the shop floor and bring back an item which best reflected us. I've told so many folks about what my adhd mouth came out with for mine that I'm not sharing here. But it's a bit of fun.

terracottafarm · 07/10/2024 00:08

Custard cream. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside.

JMSA · 07/10/2024 01:44

A chimney.

And say 'guys, I'm not going to charge you for this. It's on the house.'

I hate things like this too. I would take in a dildo. I probably wouldn't get the job but it would be worth it just to see the look on their faces. 🤣

Incognito1975 · 07/10/2024 07:42

Take something you can use as a prop for your positive character traits. Eg a diary and say you are organised and punctual and like to keep to task 🤣

PrettyParrot · 07/10/2024 07:48

I'd take a favourite book - it doesn't define me but gives a pretty good sense of my way of thinking!

Hameth · 07/10/2024 08:28

I interview all the time and I don't do this bit it's a good idea. They are probably fed up of learned answers so this will give them a bit of an insight into you. It will also allow them to calibrate your body language and tone when you are interested in something. Employers do usually want nice people who will fit into the team, so bring something from a hobby thats fun, or picture of you doing something intersting. Interviews are tiring so pick something to stand out for them. I would say to those who think team building etc etc is a waste of time etc, well you've got a long life hating your job so good luck with that.

Whisperingangel1 · 07/10/2024 08:39

Oh god OP you just reminded me, i interviewed for a retail job a long time ago and they made us go to a recruitment day. They put a box with various objects in on the table and we had to each take an item and then 'sell' it to them like we were on the QVC shopping channel. Horrific. I stayed long enough to use the staff discount then quit.

I absolutely hate 'team building' and have refused to do it on several occasions and I would never do it in my own time. It doesn't mean I can't do my job or be part of the team.

Absolutely. I’ve interviewed for 25+ years and this sounds my idea of hell for both candidate and interviewer.

Most people manage to get their job done and have perfectly amicable relationships with their colleagues without the enforced ‘fun’ or team building BS which in my experience about 90% of people would rather poke their eyes out that partake in

Enforced fun really isn’t fun in any way shape or form. Most of us want to go to work, get our jobs done, make polite chat with our colleagues and go home.

Drachuughtty · 07/10/2024 10:46

What a ludicrous request for a retail job. That would put me right off the company.
Good luck op!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/10/2024 10:58

I'd take my walking boots. Solid, reliable, not much to look at, but does a great job.

I've been in many jobs for forty years, liked most of them, and never had to do any of this "team building" shit. It was well known to be a load of wank that achieved the opposite of what it purported to.

pollymere · 07/10/2024 12:20

So Jellycat made an orange toy and a purple one. They called the orange one an aardvark when it's actually an anteater and the purple one an anteater when it's an aardvark.

I'd bring my orange "aardvark". Purely so I can say that he looks like an anteater but identifies as an aardvark... 😂 And because I'm probably an orange anteater who thinks I'm an aardvark (utter nonsense).

Nutcrackers? Meat tenderiser?

I think a swiss army knife as you're multi-talented and have hidden skills that people don't even know they need...

Vibrator

Shows you're hard working, always buzzing about and keen to get stuck in.

Nearly choked on my cheese salad sandwich laughing at this! 😂
