To be envious of these female Doctors

Dd has been ill recently so we’ve had to go to a range of different private specialists.
Ive noticed the majority were female-amazing, but also that they were young, good looking, trendy etc. The child psychiatrist was wearing smart clothes-wide legged trousers etc, but with really nice Gazelles and she walked out to my dream car. The female gp we have is beautiful, so kind and warm and was saying her husband was a psychiatrist etc.
I’m not one to be jealous or superficial normally, but I think them also obviously being very smart and the list of their educational achievements makes me more envious. I wish I’d studied harder at school, instead of having too much fun with my friends, in a way.
I don’t know, I felt a bit rubbish as a 40 something mum with my Primark bag, fairly old Quasqui and mediocre teaching career.

Ooops... I'm a female NHS consultant and I'm fat (it's rare but we do exist - no time to eat for me means binge all the sugary crap when I can - yes I should know better) and my clothes are very casual but weren't "good" to start with. I wear scrubs all day so don't need proper work clothes, otherwise I would put a bit more effort in!

Some people are just more put-together than others regardless of profession. Everyone has different priorities!

This. Snap although I am pregnant so I just wear scrubs. I do gave a wardrobe of stylish clothes that I am hanging on to and used to wear when I was a size 10 pre covid. I will be working hard to get back into them as you definitely get more respect from patients if you dress well especially in my super surgical specialty.

I am one of those doctors...I'd like to say a huge thank you to the OP...there are usually horrible doctors bashing threads on mn...one running at the moment at a 15 yr old making a scene at GPs.
It's lovely to hear someone saying something nice.

Yes, I agree.
I read this thread before I went to bed ( Southern Hemisphere) and felt all nice and glowy- thankyou for the lovely comments.
It made me feel appreciated.

Repeated myself there oops!

I just imagine they also likely came from good backgrounds, with fairly wealthy parents engaged in intellectual pursuits (not always of course!) but how cool to meet someone on a night out and they ask what you do and you’re a child psychiatrist or surgeon and so on

I do know what you are saying. I know of a young doctor who lived near us. Her father was a GP, her mum a sahm who was constantly ferrying the children around. The children went to the local private, were very sporty & musical, just general all rounders. Typical middle class family.

QuickDenimDeer · 18/12/2024 08:07

They’ll usually come from middle class backgrounds though OP, and you can get a smart kid through private school and get them into medical school, but I have to say I admire those who come from working class backgrounds who go on to medical school, a lot more of their own intelligence has got them where they are today. I think there’s a big difference. It’s also a very hard job and they have big responsibilities. I’d rather not have that burden and work my ‘shitty’ job instead.

A lot of first and second generation immigrants, too - the former would have overcome much adversity either in the home country or as a foreigner in the UK in the 80s (or both).

Hmmm as a nurse I work with a load of doctors of all levels, and like us nurses, I’d describe none as glamorous 😂 frazzled and overworked and underpaid more like. BTW ask loads of people and they’d be totally envious of a mum that’s a teacher with a Qashqai!!!

KimberleyClark · 18/12/2024 11:52

My SIL is a Consultant. She is tall, blonde and striking. But not glamorous or trendy - she has her own style. She is very down to earth. I was very much in awe of her when I first met her and imagined her to be very together and sorted. But getting * to know her better andI realised has problems and issues like the rest of us. And she has had a couple of bad health scares over the past couple of years. OP what you see may not be the truth!

They really would! You have kids which loads of people that cant wishes they had, and a great job that makes a difference in young people’s lives. Don’t be envious of anyone in health care, trust me, it’s not all sunshine and roses; quite the opposite!

FWIW I'm not a doctor, but am in a good profession/nice clothes/house and I'm constantly in awe of the teachers at DCs school! I could never do your job and really appreciate those who do the 'raising the next generation' roles because I know I'd not last a day 💜

I’m not sure what to do with these new react options so I’ll use my words - nice comment!

I'm friends with some female doctors. Their lives are no better than mine really. They have exactly the same worries, they get tired and stressed, they work long hours, evenings and weekends.

Not trying to be holier-than-thou, but I’m really not impressed by glamorous people. I do try not to make snap judgements, but if somebody is dressed very slickly I suppose I am more likely to suspect they are a bit vain or insecure. Same for women who wear a lot of makeup. Not saying I’m right, I’m just aware that’s the way my biases fall.
Obviously being scruffy isn’t a good look either. Overall, I’m most impressed by expert social skills and the ability to put others at ease and handle tricky conversations.

Agree. I see people who are beautifully turned out and I'm afraid my first thought is that they may be shallow / judge people on looks

I prefer people who focus on being kind, caring, honest and have integrity

And yes, before everyone pounces, I know it's possible to be smartly dressed and kind

Doesn’t that make you shallow and judgemental?
I am not remotely glamorous or trendy but work with a couple to glamorous looking consultants and they are absolutely lovely and good fun as well.
