To be envious of these female Doctors

Choosingbetweenthousandsofmediocresandwiches · 04/10/2024 15:34

Dd has been ill recently so we’ve had to go to a range of different private specialists.
Ive noticed the majority were female-amazing, but also that they were young, good looking, trendy etc. The child psychiatrist was wearing smart clothes-wide legged trousers etc, but with really nice Gazelles and she walked out to my dream car. The female gp we have is beautiful, so kind and warm and was saying her husband was a psychiatrist etc.
I’m not one to be jealous or superficial normally, but I think them also obviously being very smart and the list of their educational achievements makes me more envious. I wish I’d studied harder at school, instead of having too much fun with my friends, in a way.
I don’t know, I felt a bit rubbish as a 40 something mum with my Primark bag, fairly old Quasqui and mediocre teaching career.

I came from a working class background and drive a 10 year old cactus. It's pretty grubby too! I dress nicely because clothes and style are interesting to me and I enjoy it, but my hair is pretty limp spirited (and I can't be bovvered) and I've never learned to do make up. I've also got a love of bread, so I'm pretty broad in the arse. I love my job, but there must be benefits to not seeing or hearing some of the things that come my way at work. I also see some colleagues and get style/car/classiness envy, particularly the generationally wealthy private school group, but on the whole everyone is nice irrespective of how glossy they look, and lots of them do not have their personal shit together. Not sure if that helps at all.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 04/10/2024 17:47

And teachers rule! You lot are made of steel and stardust x

SabreIsMyFave · 04/10/2024 17:48

@SardinesOnGingerbread Have you got a mediocre career too, say as a Firefighter, a Police Officer, a Scientist, or a Surgeon, or something? 🙄

#Teacherschangelives

Give yourself a pat on the back.

ChampagneLassie · 04/10/2024 17:59

it’s lovely that you think this but it’s a really hard slog and massively undervalued in Uk both socially and monetarily. The facts so many do NhS and private. There are many many Drs really struggling and I’d imagine the glossy ones you encountered are probably supported by well earning spouses or inherited wealth as you’re not getting rich being a Dr in UK!

Any particular reason for the needlessly bitchy reply to a perfectly nice comment?

Wasityoubecayse · 04/10/2024 19:04

Man op i dont know why your post makes me like you so much. I love the responces i feel like women are really beginning to move forward. I had hoped to be a teacher one day but untill im calmer not a good fit. Teachers are highly respected. If you want some fun and to shake off the funk..........

Sexify your wardrobe
Get a new hairstyle
And see if you can in a fun way experiment with fashion.

Repeated myself there oops!

I just imagine they also likely came from good backgrounds, with fairly wealthy parents engaged in intellectual pursuits (not always of course!) but how cool to meet someone on a night out and they ask what you do and you’re a child psychiatrist or surgeon and so on

My daughter is a third year med student - I wish she came from a wealthy background, and didn't have such a train wreck of a mother, who is currently unable to hold down a minimum wage job, due to physical and mental health issues!

Ireolu · 04/10/2024 19:09

I'm a medic and most of my friends are doctors. My most stylish friend is an interventional neuro-radiologist. She does her lists in 4 inch heels. Typically louboutins. You would be very impressed with her OP ;)

Doctor (Neuropsychologist). You have a good night there.

Wasityoubecayse · 04/10/2024 19:19

En gaurde😂

Stanleycupsarecool · 04/10/2024 19:34

I remember being about 12 or 13 and my dad took me to a local an and e on the weekend for a mouth infection I had after having a tooth removed.

I remember leaving with the antibiotics and saying to my dad I thought we would have seen a doctor. My dad says we did, the man with short hair. I was astounded he was wearing a very faded Subaru sweatshirt and jeans rather than a shirt and tie with a white coat 😂.

I am sure after another 20 years in the profession and a couple of kids they’ll start to looks a bit more frazzled.

Lol I'm a female Dr. Live in jeans and t-shirt (well scrubs at work as I'm an anaesthetist). Noone else in my family has even been to uni , parents aren't wealthy. Rarely get nights out as we work 60-75h weeks and commute 3h a day so are basically exhausted pigeons most of the time. Def not glamorous haha

Destiny123 · 04/10/2024 19:41

Currently have a 10y old KA after partner forced me to get rid of my 2003 plate fiesta a couple of yrs ago when doing a lot of motorway miles to work lol

HRTQueen · 04/10/2024 19:49

I’m my dream work I am a doctor (varies what area I work in but always highly respected consultant) of course glamorous too. seriously I would love to have been confident and clever enough to study to be a doctor

I would love ds to be a doctor but he has absolutely no interest in becoming one he told me when he was about 10 he didn’t think they earned much so woudl rather do something else 😭

still maybe one of my future grandchildren will be a doctor 😊

Afterrain · 04/10/2024 19:55

Just think, all these beautiful doctors all have something in common.
People like you !
They aren't all self taught they would have needed educators. From pre-school,nursery, primary, secondary, and universities.
They will have trained in the NHS.
They need taught every step of the way.
(State or private)
Be proud of what you do.
As people found out in lockdown it is hard and they only had their off spring.
Yes, the pay stinks the conditions are lousy but without you they wouldnt have the education, the car, and the clothes.

Nazzywish · 04/10/2024 19:57

All the gps I know once home from work love a good primark bargain 😂. Remember it's work clothes only. They're smart enough to be bargain hunters like rest of folk.

Choosingbetweenthousandsofmediocresandwiches · 04/10/2024 19:58

Sorry, not meaning teaching is mediocre, big respects to all the teachers out there! Just my position as I’ve been the same for so many years and feel like I need a change recently I think.
I actually have Sambas, but prefer the Gazelles 🤣
No, but seriously, it’s probably in part being used to seeing 60 year old, balding male Drs in the past, perfectly nice Drs though.
We can’t really afford private, but have had to use every last penny to see certain specialists, we certainly don’t use private as a rule
I feel similar about lawyers too and think that is also a super smart profession to have

OP, I understand completely. I have also at times felt envious of female doctors, mostly because they have job security, high pay, and a lot of respect. That's quite the trio! I have also met the very glamorous ones, recently when I took my stepmum for a private appointment, and once at a party in America that was only for female docs! Oh wow, you should have been there. I have a friend who lives in America and one of her friends is an American oncologist. She invited my friend and I to a soiree of female oncologists at her flat, when I was visiting. Bear in mind, these folks earn about $400k a year, and many of them were also married to specialist docs. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE DIAMONDS. I browse the Tiffany website, bc I like to look, and I know for a fact that one pair of diamond earrings cost about $20k. I came away feeling quite overwhelmed. I had never seen people wearing so many diamonds.

I remember many years ago, awaiting my A-Level results and watching Peak Practice, and feeling envious of the pretty young blonde GP because her life was just so sorted. Good pay, respect, and job security.

Female docs who have climbed the ladder are in a pretty good position. I think it's natural to feel a bit envious, especially if you're seeing one of the glam private ones. The one I saw recently was just gorgeous!

Demonhunter · 04/10/2024 20:21

I can say I've never looked at doctors or vets with envy, more admiration at how bloody hard they must've worked from being young to be doing what they do now.

Imjustlikeyou · 04/10/2024 20:25

I get you OP. I think it’s just doctors/high up medical professionals. I could be in a a room with firefighters, lawyers, MP’s, honestly even the prime minster and would just see them as people with big jobs… but put me in a room with a doctor I suddenly feel very, very inferior 🤣

NoisyDenimShaker · 04/10/2024 20:33

Seriously79 · 04/10/2024 16:12

My DD was born with a heart issue (all sorted now) and her consultant was young, beautiful and Irish, with a great lilt to her voice. She was married to another dr who was equally as gorgeous and she had 2 sets of twins very close together.

I was always amazed at how she was so clever, put together, mumsey and a generally nice person.

Four kids and a job as a specialist doctor? I'll tell you how she was all the things you mention - lots and lots of help!

Choochoo21 · 04/10/2024 20:52

YANBU

I think some people have a beautiful personality and make a big impress and it sounds like these women were like that.

But when they’re attracted and stylish then it makes you even more envious.

I tend to get what I think of as crushes on women like this.
I guess it’s a bit like how we used to love Disney characters when we were young.

I think we all feel like we wished we studied harder but there’s a reason we didn’t.

These women may have had to face tremendous obstacles but the majority of the time, successful people have successful and supportive parents.

It’s also never too late to retrain :)

TheMoth · 04/10/2024 20:55

I've never envied doctors, although I appreciate how much work they've put into getting there. Perhaps because had I wanted to be a Dr, that's what I would have done. But working in a hospital, and having to touch people, didn't appeal to me.

I have ended up working with people (teens), but at least I never have to touch them or deal with illness. I'm another mediocre teacher, but a stylish, sorted one with a funky car.

FragileIsAsFragileDoes · 04/10/2024 21:00

kaffkooks · 04/10/2024 16:30

This is very funny and describes me very well😅 Part of the problem is that, on days when I am not well turned out I find people (staff and patients) don't trust me or take me seriously. I need to look the part given what I'm doing so patients have confidence in me.

Completely agree. Swapped my scrubs (junior) for Own Clothes recently and noticed a big change in how patients related to me. OP, it's all for show! You can fake it till you make it too!!

Having said that, I don't hang around with other Drs outside work cos they make me feel inadequate 😅
