to not want to go on holiday with DH as he’s taking Pot Noodles?

Hear me out on this, we are off to Italy in a month, a lifelong dream of mine, I had visions of long leisurely lunches and dinners, great Italian food and wine aplenty.

Food on holiday has always been a contentious issue for DH, he believes eating out is a waste of money and would rather sit in the hotel room with a Pot Noodle (seriously). On one holiday he actually went to a supermarket and bought all these pound noodles to try. Now I’m not for blowing money on fancy gourmet dinners but I like to eat nice, good healthy food. We’ve gone all inclusive and that’s usually a great compromise.

So this time I was informing him of the Italian tradition of eating late and it being an event, courses taking a while etc etc and he’s been so annoying about it saying he wants to go to McDonalds or he’ll just have Pot Noodles. He like to eat at 12 noon for lunch and 5pm for dinner on the dot, he eats very fast too. He says he’s going for the sights not for the food.

So I’m contemplating leaving him with his sad Pot Noodle and just taking the DC put for a nice meal on my own. It’s the way he keeps going on about it to get a rise out of me.

What adult eats dinner at 5pm?

Can he at least take the "Pot Pasta"? You can get carbonara and bolognaise. That would be a nice compromise.

Yes, that will make all the difference! 😁

He's just anxious around new foods. That's why he would rather a taste, than committing to paying for a dish he might not like.

It would get annoying being out with someone like that for every meal but at the same time, ld be fucking devastated if I was starving, ordered, and it was horrible😆

I have a friend like that who goes away and will only order basic chicken, chips, pizza etc. If he orders something 'familiar' but it arrives looking different/with extra or unknown ingredients, he genuinely looks like he's turning green. Once he's turned off food he feels sick and cant eat.
My parents make fun of him and roll their eyes for not eating the local food but honestly, its just not worth it if you have a weak stomach for new foods.
I tend to avoid trying very new flavours in public, I gag when I hate a taste and make the ugliest face. Nobody wants that to happen in public.😅

What adult eats dinner at 5pm?

Oh god don't get me started, this ended my last relationship, I would get all sorts of grief as I had our evening meal ready at 7 or 7:30pm.
Apparently that was was very late for an evening meal?

Notimeforaname · 30/09/2024 23:12

Is he Irish 🥴

I was just about to ask the same thing 😂

JohnTheRevelator · 30/09/2024 23:13

Sounds like he's one of these strange people who are not interested in food. Eat to live rather than live to eat!

Italy isn’t for me
I don’t eat pasta or pizza!

As if this is the entirety of Italian food 😂 I ate very well in Italy and I don’t like pizza and don’t eat much pasta. Pasta is not even eaten as a main course in Italy. They have a wide ranging menu. And the charcuterie is out of this world.

OP you’re just going to have to leave your husband to his sad noodles and get on with it, at least you have your kids to take out with you. I’m afraid I couldn’t be married to someone who hates eating out but i imagine he’s always been that way and he’s not going to change now. My dad is the same and I doubt he’s had anything more adventurous than a burger or a roast chicken in his life.

My partner, both my parents, my best friend. Loads more.
I don't know if we do this more in Ireland or not but its a normal dinner time for many people if they are home.

Flatulence · 30/09/2024 23:16

Leave him to it. Take the kids out for nice food and let your husband eat shite that won't even fill him up in the room.

I get not being adventurous with food (though I'd personally find it incredibly dull). But it's an all-inclusive resort. There will typically always be an option for something like steak and chips or really basic pasta or margherita pizza or salads.

But if he wants to sit on his own and eat a fucking Pot Noodle and not eat the food he's already paid for then 🤷🏽‍♀️. Let him. I wonder how long he'll last doing that before he gets hungry/bored/lonely.

Frankly he sounds like a dickhead but assume he must be marvellous in all other aspects for you to tolerate this attitude.

I think it was the "fish on a Friday of course" comment 😆

What a LOON!

Growlybear83 · 30/09/2024 23:19

Apart from the wonderful food thst your husband is missing out on, why on earth does he want to eat his evening meal at 5 pm? What is he planning to do from 5.15 onwards once he's eaten his pot noodle?

Notimeforaname · 30/09/2024 23:20

Definitely. 😂 I don't think I'd had pizza til i was about 10 and had never tasted curry sauce til i was about 12 or 13. And I'm only 37🤣

My folks are much more adventurous now with food but Jesus the 90's were bland in Ireland.

If youve gone all inclusive surely he’s effectively already paid for food so is paying more by taking his own pot noodles??

RampantIvy · 30/09/2024 23:21

I'm sorry, but eating pot noodles and McDonald's when on holiday in a country that is known for its delicious food is every kind of wrong, and utterly joyless.

@Astridastro Leave your fun sponge of a husband with his pot noodles and eat out with your children.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/09/2024 23:21

if you've paid for all inclusive, surely eating pot noodle means he wno't be getting full value of the AI?
I hope the cargo of pot noodle results in an excess baggage charge.

She meant that on past holidays they have gone all inclusive and that has been a good compromise. But All Inclusive is not an option on this holiday.

This holiday is not AI. Past ones have been.

It might be hard for some to believe but some people genuinely don't get much/any joy from food in general whether they are away or not.
They of course find joy in other things but for many, food is just fuel and not something they spend time thinking about or planning.

Who are all these man babies?! What time do they go to bed? If I ate my last meal of the day at 5pm I'd be....much thinner 🤣

That's actually pretty offensive to Italians.
We do eat more than this you know. 🤨
How do you manage in the UK on fish'n'chips alone?

  1. Puts me in mind of a colleague who gave up a job in an academic library to go to the Algarve and run an English pub type establishment. She was a fun person, probably a lot more adventurous than her customers.
  2. DC had his birthday just before starting uni. Pot noodles featured amongst the presents. He wasn’t impressed. Pot noodle was part of the hall of residence survival kit. He said his idea of emergency food is pesto, bacon and a handful of spinach.
  3. Enjoy Italy and if he wants to eat with you, great. If he doesn’t then don’t let it get you down OP
