How on earth are we allowing porn like this to access

Surely aggressive and violent porn and all the other filth must be affecting people? I worry so much about what children get to see. Surely it must have an effect on men, it’s just so shocking the things that are out there.
We never had access to this before, just some magazines, Page 3, a few videos…what’s available now surely must have a psychological affect on people

At every point I have said that those under 18 should not view pornography. Just because I put the onus back on the parents to deal with their childrens illegal behaviour. Does not mean I am unreasonable.

You really need to add a degree of reality to your belief that it is always the extreme sex that all men view. While some may view it, There is far more non extreme content out there. Which suggests it is one of the less popular genres.

I just think it's fascinating that a man is so dead set on defending porn consumption. You don't seem to care at all about of the points raised here by women. As long as you can get your rocks off eh?

You sound shockingly naive tbh.

Yes I think they have pretty much all seen it by the time they leave primary school.

I'm not in anyway "naive", I just don't accept hyperbole and sweeping statements unconditionally.

Many ex porn actresses now campaign against the industry. A lot have serious mental illnesses such as BPD and have been victims of child sexual abuse in the past, it’s exploitation even if they are over 18.

It's been known for years that many sex workers including those in porn, are survivors of child abuse. Many ex porn actresses have spoken of the trauma, dissociation and drug use needed in order to work in the industry.

Its so screwed up and the biggest sites are complicit

All governments. In western countries at least.

I'm from New Zealand with family in politics. My Aunt told me of visiting a MP and his wife in their home for dinner. After they all ate he disappeared. My Aunt and her husband asked where he went to? His wife told them he would be down in the basement watching porn. He does it every day.

They were horrified.

There is no reason why porn cannot be treated in the same way that child porn and animal porn currently is. Force it onto the dark web.

Please never ever refer to child abuse as porn . It is a disgusting and ignorant thing to say

I cannot believe some of the comments on here defending it or being blasé. Have you actually seen the shit on Pornhub, even the adverts, the language used, it’s agressive and derogatory and it seems to be getting worse and worse. How this cannot affect people’s minds I’ve no idea. Also, to the people saying there was porn in the 80’s & 90’s, it was NOTHING like now. My Dd is
only still v young, but I’m v scared for her future
I find it very odd the people downplaying it, have you actually looked at it recently, are you men?

well, considering a large majority of men watch it, a decent number of women too, and the majority of regular users are men, there will be plenty of people here on this thread who are regular watchers

they like it

they don't want to stop

so they're gonna rationalise and minimise, then tell the rest of us off for "pearl clutching"

I get the tube to work and often wonder how many of the men sitting near me watch violent, degrading porn, then share train carriages with women and girls. What are they thinking? Are us females completely dehumanised to a large percentage of them?

This.

Every day when I go outside and am amongst strangers, I wonder, how many of them regularly watch violent porn. And most of it nowadays is violent. The things done to women in regular porn; gagging, choking, hair pulling, slapping, ejaculating on faces, it's all so utterly disgusting.

I know men around me watch this stuff and like it. I'm utterly disgusted by them. I hate that I have to move through the world amongst them.

As a survivor of CSA it's bloody uncomfortable at best...

I have a niece at uni. She and her friends will not date guys, since high school. They complain almost all the boys watch porn and they don't want to have anything to do with them.

I think this may be a big part of our declining birth rates. Women are increasingly turned off by men as men become addicted to porn.

Luckily not all men, but enough to put me off dating ever again if I was to be left a widow.

ATenShun · 02/10/2024 20:17

Are you able to show the amount campaigning agaisnt porn now as a comparison of the numbers in the industry?

@Surf2Live
As you like a number of others on this site only parade the most extreme sex as the go to for chastising any porn use. How many viewers are actually using that particular genre compared to others.

@theresabluebirdinmyheart
Yes I do mean police, social services, schools. You want something done about it then give the child and more so the parent the responsibility of raising and looking after their child. After all, if a child was caught stealing from a shop the authorities would be informed. Why is the crime of viewing porn not the parents problem?

Those of you accusing me and others of being blase, none of you seem willing to take the steps to deal with children viewing it.

VapeVamp12 · 02/10/2024 20:49

Someone made a comment above that children, by the time they reach the end of primary school, would have seen pornography. Is this actually true?

My son just started Reception. I certainly have no plans to provide him with any kind of mobile phone until he is at least secondary school age, but my question is are primary age kids having phones that can access the internet by some parents? And if so, can't all of those types of sites be locked out by using parental controls?

The thought of my son seeing this stuff at any point horrifies me but the idea he could see it within the next few years makes me feel sick.

Yes. It's been reported that primary school children are addicted to porn and acting it out in school. Their parents should be prosecuted for neglect and yes, you can block illicit websites easily.

Sunhatweather · 02/10/2024 21:21

I work in mental health and yes, this extreme porn messes up people’s brains.
There’s no defence for it - if that kind of weird, violent shit is your kink, use your imagination or find a consenting, willing partner.
The amount of extreme, violent porn shows a highly damaged society, not proof that it should be widely available because there is ‘demand’. I’d go as far to say that anyone trying to defend or normalise it hasn’t quite recognised their own mental health problems.

theresabluebirdinmyheart · 02/10/2024 21:28

@ATenShun you seriously think police or social services have resources to do anything about it?
Even people caught viewing child abuse online get a slap on the wrist (ie. Huw Edwards), you’re living in a dream world.

My issue isn’t only with pornography being readily available for kids to see it’s the fact it’s even made in the first place anyway.

Charley50 · 02/10/2024 21:30

TheaBrandt · 01/10/2024 17:53

I don’t understand that society is so careful with health and safety at work and not saying the wrong thing etc yet for that industry all the bets are off and they can say and do the worst things ever. Have never understood this.

Yes. This.

theresabluebirdinmyheart · 02/10/2024 21:31

I have a friend who works in safeguarding and she told me of more than one horrific incidents in primary schools clearly influenced by exposure to porn. (Not all the kids involved but usually one instigator). Teachers reported it but all that happened was told social services were “aware”.

Firstly the authorities resources or lack thereof, really isn't the problem of the reporter. You say you want all porn removed. As it happens there are some things that are legal I would prefer to be removed. But as this thread is primarily about children accessing it, lets be sensible and use the weapons available to us to stop that happening.

That is have the grown ups parent their kids and deal with illegal behaviour, and restrict their ability to access the internet. This would do their mental health no end of good. No social media, no constant screen time etc.

Can you suggest any realistic workable solutions?

Puttheneedleontherackets · 02/10/2024 23:20

@ATenShun But this thread isn’t primarily about children accessing it? People keep telling you that and talking about all the other negative aspects of porn too…you don’t seem to want to think about it…

Exactly how do you ban the internet? The dark web? Control individuals who share on porn hub? The answer is you can't so you need to use societal influencing factors.

What that looks like I don't know. But I believe we have the capacity to corrupt for the positive. In Ireland we have a citizens assembly, a 100 people representing society and they collectively work with subject matter experts to tackle big societal issues, e.g. drugs.

I think national and international forums would be a good start. It's a universal problem so the solution needs to be universal.

No one's talking about banning the internet. It's not difficult block websites and images. Brazil blocked Twitter. Lots of countries block porn and we already block illegal content.

Marblesbackagain · 03/10/2024 00:25

@candlewhickgreen the dark web exists believing anything is inaccessible is exceptionally naive. No IT person with a tiny bit of knowledge can get around the blocks short of a china approach and that's never gonna be a runner.

How many people know how to access the dark web? Do you think children do?

Marblesbackagain · 03/10/2024 00:34

Well going in the information event I was at for professionals, they don't need to. Adults do and share content on WhatsApp, Snapchat etc. the images could be screen grabs etc.

To be honest they don't have to go to the dark web for 90% if horrific content.
