An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

Yes it has and it makes me furious. There’s been a deliberate move to rebrand benefits, or social security as “welfare”. This ensures the system has negative connotations associated with the US system of time limited “handouts” rather than a system set up to benefit us all. It’s so cynical.

That started with the Blair government. It was the first to coin the phrase ‘welfare reform’ when introducing the changes to sickness and other benefits at the time. Britain has been a ‘welfare state since Asquith’s reforms circa 1910, but the phrase has been used much more recently.

Some people were actually there and saw the damage she did on a daily basis. It doesn’t look any better in hindsight.

Exactly.

You've already posted that exact thing earlier in the thread. Please don't spam us with your Labour HQ messages.

I've nothing to do with labour hq, if there is such a thing - but if people keep saying labour/Starmer aren't doing anything then its only fair to point out what they have done and ask whether the original complaint is valid.
Do you have a problem with that or does it rile tory/reform hq?

ThisOldThang · 30/09/2024 17:49

I'm actually getting a bit worried that he might end up resigning and then we'll be stuck with some far left nutjob.

I don’t think he will. He is fairly settled on being in power but I know what you mean. It would collapse the U.K.

deeahgwitch · 30/09/2024 18:07

I salute you Mr Nick Faulkner of Farnham Surrey on your excellent letter.

Thank you @Tryingtokeepgoing for posting it.

I have a problem with you posting the exact same list multiple times in a single thread. It's spam and against the site rules.

Well if contributors are not reading the thread and effectively repeating unfounded harangues what is supposed to happen? you want me to change the order of the current list before reposting?
As for calling it spam - how about addressing my point instead?

Yes, some of us were there. Quite a lot of us! And we saw how so much better things were as a result, and the opportunities that were created.

There is a tendency for those on the left, almost always with a primarily public sector background, to think they are always right. Regardless of the facts. But they are often not bright enough to accept they don’t know it all, and so when challenged with facts that don’t agree with their version of the truth they are unable to actually debate. But instead resort to tired old tropes. Thatcher bad. Blair good. Actually both were good leaders, who could inspire people and effect change. Brown, May and, it appears, Starmer cannot inspire people. And all were/are probably ‘techocratic’ leaders, which actually means micro managers. So, not only can they not lead, no one wants to work with them either. Which brings us back to the thread. He’s lost the respect of much of the public and party.

Not at all condescending....🙄I actually agree with some of your points but to suggest others with a different view or memory of the Thatcher era are not bright is not on.

Look at the state of the water system in the UK, for example, that can be traced back to Thatcher - she made an absolute mess of that - and don't get me started on the trains etc.

Paul2023 · 30/09/2024 19:22

Isn’t there a story on Starmer that is yet to be released?..orthis just more conspiracy theories?

It happens all the time. I wish I had £1 for every time I’ve been called dim on here - I bow to the superior intellects that have such compelling arguments they have to resort to insult.

Junked BIBI Stockholm

The new government are still using the Bibby Stockholm as far as I can see - the contract expires in January. Where are they going to house the residents in January - will they be handing out tents?

Junked Rwanda scheme

Over 10,000 new asylum seekers have arrived by boat since Labour announced that decision - is there a new deterrent in its place?

Settled rail, doctors disputes

The Guardian - 'It has raised the possibility – feared by NHS bosses – that other health workers may feel emboldened by junior doctors receiving a 22% pay increase after a long campaign of strikes and will now seek a similar rise.'

Not inviting Musk

Regrets?
27 Sept 2024 - Starmer says Tesla investment welcome after Musk row.

Removing Thatcher potrait :)

Petty and mean spirited.

Visits to mend relations with France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, US

Sunak managed to sign a number of bilateral deals without much fuss - what has Starmer achieved and what is he going to give away?

Climate & nature envoy

Does that involve sending more money overseas? Why has Ed Miliband pledged to send £6 billion overseas in climate aid by the end of 2025 when there's a black hole? The Conservatives were planning to ditch or delay the pledge which was made before the energy crisis.

Removal of single word OFSTED judgements

Whether the new report card is helpful for parents remains to be seen.

Devolution for Hull, East Yorks, Lincolnshire

The devolution deals were in the final stages when Labour took office. The new government has scrapped devolution deals for Norfolk and Suffolk - presumably you think that's a negative? The Labour opposition in Hull were against devolution anyway.

DarkDarkNight · 28/09/2024 19:57

As a Labour voter I’m pretty pissed off with it all. The problem is the mainstream media (The Mail and Telegraph in particular) were just waiting for something to get them with. The freebies and ‘scandal’ absolutely fade into insignificance when you compare them to the COVID contracts or anything Boris Johnson has done but that’s beside the point.

They had to be better, they’re held to a different standard by the right-wing media yes, but also because you can’t bang on and on about Tory sleaze then pull a chair up at the table and join in.

Agree
I don't doubt that politicians of all complexions have received freebies such as Footie tickets for ever and a day, but given what happened under Boris I'm hugely disappointed that Labour haven't been smarter about this. They've fallen into the hand of the right wing media.
As foe incompetence- don't be ridiculous! It's 11 weeks after the election and summer recess duing nearly all of that time. I'm suspending judgement.

That’s such a strange way to look at it: not that the most senior Labour figures are greedy freeloaders and appallingly hypocritical, but that all this freebie grabbing is bad because “They've fallen into the hand of the right wing media.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 30/09/2024 23:07

Yes indeedy @Rummly… Starmer and Rayner caught red handed with their snouts in the trough, but it’s the right wing media at fault. Laughable isn’t it.

Though Labour themsleves called it the "welfare state" when the whole construct was set up post war... So while it's convenient to say it's been deliberately rebranded to make a point, as is often the case it's not actually correct

Well exactly - a long list of things that are either business as usual, already started under the previous administration, statements without plans or action or gesture politics.

Nothing on the Mission Boards that were going to be set up to deliver real reform and change. No update on their 100 day plan and growth 'mission'; indeed its almost as if it was another soundbite... Since if the plan was to have budget at the end of October (I asume that was also the plan, and not something they only decided when in power) then teh 100 day thing was never going to amount to anything!

The only sad thing is, so far, there is no sign from the conservative leadership proces that there's a leader with any more charisma...although, plenty with more experience of actual delivery! It's just a question of whether we want want they say they want to deliver ;)

So far Starmer in my humble opinion;

Caved into the unions who will now undoubtedly pull the strings whenever pay deal are on the table.

Stopped the winter fuel allowance.

Sent middle aged women to prison for tweets when our prisons are already full and releasing prisoners early.

Talk of banning smoking in pub gardens- even lots of non smokers think this is too far and will kill off the pub trade.

GB Energy ? When? This is clearly a long way off.

Smash the boat gangs? Rubbish. It can’t be done like Starmer says it is.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2024 09:23

Stopped the winter fuel allowance. Means tested the WFA so it no longer goes to people like me who don’t need it

Sent middle aged women to prison for tweets when our prisons are already full and releasing prisoners early. Sent racist woman who incited burning down hotels full of asylum seekers to prison and continued the previous government’s policy of releasing prisoners early

Talk of banning smoking in pub gardens- even lots of non smokers think this is too far and will kill off the pub trade. Talk’s cheap

GB Energy ? When? This is clearly a long way off. it’s been less than three months, nobody expects it tomorrow

Perhaps bright was a poor choice of words. Sorry. But certainly blinkered, or only seeing thing from their own point of view and not representative of the counrty as a whole. Which I guess is what often leads to he accusation that Labour govenments are good if you work for the public sector, but bad for almost everyone else and therefo]re, logically, bad for the county in the long run

In many respects many countries in Europe are only just beginning to face the demons that we did in the 80s and 90s. Outside the US, China and the UK where have the big tech companies come from? That was a direct result of 1980s economic policy. We are the first deleveloped country in the world to have closed all our coal fired power stations...and are one of the greenest from an energy generation perspective. I am not sure what "GB Energy" can do to that the market hasn't already done. Other than switch returns from pension funds and their customers (us!) to the governments coffers...

There is a tendency to talk down the Bristish economy and its perfmance, but for our size we are still doing pretty well in most major global rankings. And we are stil the 6th biggest economy in the world But, again, it doesn't suit the narrative for those on the left...so rather than build on what has worked, and improve on what hasn't there is a desire to meddle in everything (for ideological reasons) and subsequently deliver less.

The Blair government started well by not taking that approach...and I think that is waht many of us hoped for when Labour came into power. But as Brown did, albeit after 10 years not 10 weeks, Starmer has taken us down the micro manager vs leader traits route and led us back into doom and gloom

MrsWhattery · 01/10/2024 09:34

I’d forgotten about the Thatcher portrait. That really pissed me off - and I’m as lefty as they come and grew up under Thatcher’s government; I’m fully aware of the harms she did. But show some respect for no. 10 and the people who have democratically taken their place there - whether you agree with them or not, whether history judged them well or not, whether they were a terrible leader or not - especially before you’ve even had a go at making a good fist of it yourself.

A portrait of thatcher, and even Liz truss if there is one (though less of a democratic choice), is a record of previous inhabitants and should be there to remind you to try to do a good job and understand the historical significance of that place which you are just passing through. Removing portraits like that has a very unpleasant bad taste to it that brings to mind some of the worst regimes in history. It’s arrogant and made me really question his mindset.
