An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

Absolute storm in a teacup. Ministers are absolutely allowed to accept gifts. He's done nothing wrong.

If it were just some specs and suits for Starmer I’d agree. If it were that plus a stay in the Covent Garden penthouse I’d still agree.

But it’s the rampant, startling hypocrisy.

Tories snuffling like truffle pigs? Appalling. Labour snuffling like truffle pigs? Unimpeachable. Tories on private jets? Terrible, contemptible. Labour on private jets? Nothing to see here.

Tory cronyism (which was lied about a lot by Labour anyway)? Horrible, disgraceful. Labour cronyism? All fine.

Tories might cut WFA? Outrageous, callous (that was just 10 months ago - and the Tories didn’t touch it). Labour do cut WFA? All good.

The trouble with hypocrites is that they’re usually dishonest and untrustworthy generally.

I have a condition that means the cold makes me ill. I don't need to read up on it

Money should go to those who need it. more should go to pensioners who need it none should go to those sitting on vast stacks of vash.

Pity the Labour Party don’t agree !!

A few years ago an alcoholic neighbour of my mother's got a disability car and a booze allowance

What is a disability car? Who paid the booze allowance and why @justasking111 ?

She means a motability car. Paid for by qualifying for the higher rate mobility allowance of PIP which most people with severe mobility problems caused by an actual physical disability have trouble qualifying for because the bar is set so high. It’s fucking nonsense. Posted on the premise that her mother knows everything there is to know about the disability and the benefit claim. If, as a disabilty outreach worker, I’d had £1 for every person I came across who was convinced their neighbour/relative/friend was claiming fraudulently I’d be posting from a beach in the Bahamas. It’s shite.

ThisOldThang · 29/09/2024 13:35

The system really is messed up when addiction qualifies for additional money via PIP which will just be spent on booze or drugs.

IT DOESN”T.

dandeliondandy · 29/09/2024 12:43

You obviously haven't been following any of the disability rights organisations and reading what they are saying.

Exactly. The government know how anxious the wait for clarification is making all of those disabled people who rely on these benefits to make ends meet. If they’re not going to follow the proposals in the consultation document why don’t they just come out and say it.

Rosscameasdoody · 29/09/2024 19:06

justasking111 · 29/09/2024 13:33

That explains our councils new attitude. It's going to be means tested because we live in an area attractive to retirees who downsize with huge nests egg plus pensions. In our road NHS employees, police inspectors, university lecturers, all enjoyed the attendance allowance eventually. We're now being advised that it will be means tested if the younger generations want their bins collected.

Add to that the houses full of care in the community mental health, alcoholic guests, who madly got the WFA and spent it on drugs, drink.

A few years ago an alcoholic neighbour of my mother's got a disability car and a booze allowance.

Another care in the community man got an approved prostitute once a month.

Our council is now at a crossroads financially.

Attendance allowance is provided by central government, not local councils, you’re talking absolute shite.

@Tryingtokeepgoing

Maybe we'll end up with another Thatcherite government to sort the whole mess out?

There's a reason she won three elections in a row - hard-nosed but sound budgets, economic growth, falling taxes and a fear of Labour bankrupting the country again.

She also hid true unemployment figures by encouraging the DWP to put as many people ‘on the sick’ as they could because at the time they didn’t qualify as unemployed. And she decimated the UK manufacturing industry in favour of her mates in banking and service industries. The fact that you support what she did tells me that you don’t know the first thing about the Tory government of that era. I lived through it and worked in a jobcentre at the forefront of the cuts. As a nation we still haven’t recovered from what Thatcher did.

FranceIsWhereItsAt · 29/09/2024 19:20

I am just SO disgusted that Kier Starmer thinks that wearing smart clothes is so important, that he needs someone else to pay for them. Personally, I'd rather my PM wore jeans and a polo shirt, provided he actually cared about the people of this country that voted for him. While I didn't vote Labour, I did vote strategically to get the other lot out, thinking that at least a new government might have learned lessons from the sleaze and disgusting behaviour of the Tories, but instead, what do we get, just more of the same, who can't wait to get their snouts in the trough! I am appalled, and would have found myself writing the same letter as Rosie Duffield, had I been in his government. So watch out Mr Starmer, you are already on borrowed time in my opinion!

There’s something in that, on one point of view.

There’s also a whole lot of stuff you didn’t include about the dire state of the country, industry and economy that Thatcher had to put right.

Can you imagine if he did, you'd still have people moaning, how he's so scruffy and doesn't give a toss, no respect etc.

Our council categorically state that they provide the carers, which is partly paid for by the attendance allowance which is not nearly enough. Hence our council picking up the bill.

My mother helped this person for a number of years. A lovely man with a serious heart condition who needed the car to get around.

We're in rural Wales, no buses, no train station nearby. His car was changed every three years for him until he died.

Another neighbour with silicosis qualified for one too. He worked in the quarry, his lungs were wrecked.

Yes I know @justasking111 meant the Motability scheme. I am not sure she did though. She possibly really believes the"free car" shite. Not sure what she meant by the "booze allowance" crap.

I do agree with that. He can’t meet Biden, Macron or Meloni in a pair of Stan Smiths, jeans and a t-shirt. Or go to the Cenotaph dressed badly.

But he could buy his own clothes and glasses.

It still doesn’t alter the fact that councils are not responsible for administering AA - eligibility is determined by DWP and payments come from the benefit budget. The care system run by local authorities is totally separate - they take AA into account for home carers, along with the persons’ ability to pay from their own income but AA was never meant to completely cover the cost of care. It’s meant as a contribution to the extra cost of living with a disability, and care is only one element of that. If you go into full time residential care provided at the expense of the local authority AA is stopped because it’s an overlapping benefit unless you’re funding your own care.

“So what you’re saying is that the Equality Act 2010 which covers the rights of everyone in the UK with a long term health condition shouldn’t apply to anyone seeking public office?” Where in my comment did I say this? But, yes, since you have brought it up I think it should at least be amended when it comes to anyone seeking public office.
My adult dc is severely disabled, can’t walk or talk, is tube fed, has learning difficulties and cannot do anything for himself. Do you think his disabilities should not be taken into account if he were to campaign to become the next Prime Minister? Do you honestly think his cognitive abilities for example, should not be taken into account when considering his suitability for the position? Or are you just virtue signalling? Because, much as I love my dc, I don’t think he would be a good candidate for the job. We need to move away from being obsessed with political correctness, mindlessly quoting rules, regulations and official “Acts”, and instead apply some common sense and critical thinking skills, especially when it comes to choosing the people who are going to be governing us. If we did, regardless of left or right, the country would be in a much better situation than it is now.

Don’t know where to start with this. You absolutely cannot factor in disability when considering someone for a job. Any more than you can factor in race, sex or religion. That’s why the Equality Act exists. To protect your DC and others like him from being discriminated against on the grounds of disability. If you start down the road of excluding the very people the act was meant to protect where does it end ? I was a disability outreach worker for over 15 years and during that time l worked flat out to protect the rights of people like your son, and l’m severely disabled myself, so you know what you can do with your utterly insulting and ill thought through accusation of ‘virtue signalling’.
