Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

I see the wishful thinking brigade are out in force again. They really don’t like the thought of giving up their foreign holidays or their continuing accumulation of totally unnecessary crap do they.

‘Let future generations sort it out’ - than fuck our parents and grandparents didn’t think like that.

Mmm. Quite. Close our eyes and keep our fingers crossed. Some knight in shining armour will be along any minute now… any minute…any minute… oh. As we know, there are no knights in shining armour, it’s us that hold the power to change our own future.

The laws we have can deal with that in the present. We don't have strong enough laws to deal with other direct harms - like drink-driving deaths and corporate negligence, which are tolerated.

The harms we happily accept are enormous, I don't think concern for impact on others should apply only to one thing (protests).

Oh I absolutely agree with you in that we don't have strong enough laws to deal with other direct harms ie drink driving deaths etc. It's infuriating that these people effectively choose to get behind a wheel and kill someone then get not mich more than a slap on the wrist. But again, I don't think that that excuses JSOs methods and tactics and absolves them of the responsibility of the harm that they're causing.

Concern for impact on others shouldn't apply to one thing only, you're right, it should apply to all actions that cause harm to others. Including the tactics of JSO.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 28/09/2024 19:59

In case it's not clear, it is possible to hate them AND still care about the environment.

^ This.
So YABU not to care about climate change.

TheCentreCannotHold · 28/09/2024 20:01

To be fair, @Motomum23, most people who take the climate threat seriously do not also believe in carbon off-setting. That Venn diagram doesn't fly.

Anyone who believes in 'the science' is not a scientist quite frankly.
Science is ever changing and evolving depending on what we discover at that time. Trusting it blindly is foolish in the extreme - as foolish as thinking I can pay a few quid to 'off set the carbon footprint of my flight'.

True. It is. But, we ignore it at our peril. The science around climate change is developing all the time and almost unanimously is showing that human caused climate breakdown is happening at a much faster rate than predicted. You only need to look at the headlines to see it with your own eyes. It’s only going to get worse.

NewGreenDuck · 28/09/2024 20:03

I haven't been on holiday out of the UK for 10 years. I would suggest that many people who are in favour of JSO have been on more foreign holidays than I have both in that 10 years and in my whole life. Which is why, to put it crudely, I'm so pissed off with them.

thepariscrimefiles · 28/09/2024 20:05

SodaFountainMountain · 28/09/2024 19:55

It’s really not the point but a quick google;

‘In July 2020, Corinna Smith poured a mixture of boiling water and sugar over her husband, Michael Baines, while he was sleeping in their home in Neston, Cheshire. Baines suffered burns to 36% of his body and died in the hospital five weeks later. Smith was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 12 years.’

Regardless, I stand by my point that to wish this kind of thing on any human being is vile. The post has been deleted by MN along with all their other posts so drama over, as you were.

Apparently they call it Prison Napalm. Even if the injuries aren't life threatening, they maim and cause incredible pain. To gloat about such actions which the deleted poster did is not something that I would expect a doctor to support. So much for the hippocratic oath.

Flowerbuttonflower · 28/09/2024 20:09

We had a JSO/ XR protest about 15 miles from us. They camped in an old church and they blocked the road, with their cars. The old church was in our village.
Between parking totally on the path. And making the road one way on a bend.
They are tosser’s. But I still reduce and recycle.
We are a vegetarian household and buy from a refill shop. Don’t fly. But I do have children. Most important thing for me is to stop buying stuff.

Yes. You can dislike their tactics and still take responsibility for your own impact. Good for you. Hopefully most people are able to hold these two positions and not use their dislike of JSO to justify their own harmful actions.

I don’t know but that’s made me fancy some Heinz tomato soup and I was wondering what to have for tea!! 🍜 🥖

I don't understand why Just Stop Oil's specific tactics would sway you either way on taking the climate crisis seriously. The science is still the science regardless of whether they pull stunts or not. Deciding you don't believe in it based on headline-grabbing stunts rather than actually reading and researching the facts seems rather stupid.

The thing is they make people angry, upset, stressed and ill with their actions. I’ve written this before, but JSO make me want to burn my gas hobs with nothing on them all day and go up to the loft and chuck the insulation out. I wouldn’t do it, but that’s what they make me think of.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 28/09/2024 20:30

The closing scene in the movie Apocalypto has the Native Americans fighting and then they notice the Spanish boats coming on the horizon.

The real threat.

Irreversible human caused climate change is the Spanish boats. JSO methods are annoying but their messaging isn’t.

schloss · 28/09/2024 20:32

BeautyPageantDropout · 28/09/2024 19:38

the suffragettes achieved their aims by thoroughly pissing people off too. those women were not popular with people like you.

Along side, and I believe created before the suffragettes were the suffragists who campaigned for womens votes but did not use the same tactics. Non violence and not pissing people sometimes will achieve far more.

Who has become stressed and ill at the actions of JSO 😂😂

What stresses me and makes me ill are the rapid environmental changes, the flooding, the downpours and then months of drought and extreme heat not a couple of fannies throwing soup at a glass covered painting. I get stressed at people denying climate change or thinking to hell with the children and grandchildren they can sort out out mess they didn’t make so we don’t have to change anything about our lives.

Pingpongglitch · 28/09/2024 20:55

Just Stop Oil are not drawing attention to climate change. They are drawing attention to themselves.

Their irritating antics ARE the news. They are drowning out the message.

When I hear them speak, I don't think about climate science. I think, these entitled little pukes make me want to express my feelings in an unpleasant physical form.

Wasn't Dale Vince, owner of Ecotricity, one of their biggest backers until late last year. He had no stake in luring people away from fossil fuels, did he now. Yes, I am being sarcastic. It might not be an oil company but it's certainly one with a big financial interest.

There is not one person on this thread who hasn’t benefited from oil and gas exploration.

To the posters sharing links from the Guardian, BBC and UN. I could cry with laughter if it wasn’t so tragic that you believe their biased crap and then repeat it as fact.

Enjoy your ridiculously high energy bills as you’d better get used to it and keep on voting for becoming poorer. Corporate greed instead of “green” is what’s driving it if you cared to look.

I hope you haven’t reproduced. Do you not care about the future of the planet?

Get a life. And with your attitude and obvious views if you agree with the walkers stopping ambulances etc to sit and drink beer, whining about the planet for something to do on an afternoon, I sincerely hope YOU have not reproduced.

Pat888 · 28/09/2024 21:19

They target the wrong people - oil is produced to run cars -they should target and shame car drivers and airlines. They wouldn’t produce oil if no one wanted it.

But most of the stuff that we do and buy, that burns fossil fuels, is unnecessary. We should be minimising oil use to the absolute essentials. Consuming less is the key action.

That is my view as well.

They never target anything which is using oil and a luxury people could do without. Never seen them at airports used for business trips or long weekends that could end, never seen them by SUV manufacturers, for example. They often target places where almost everyone goes there by public transport, whose power is or can come from renewable energy.

Oil is produced to manufacture all kinds. Like, for example, the phone/tablet/computer you've just used to type that message that's made in China. Tell me, how did it make it all the way from there?
