Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

Not if I take them by car. Which I do. It's quicker to do that.

I’m waiting for the ‘but my child can’t get to a hospital’ people to explain why it’s ok for their future relatives to not be able to access hospitals due to climate change.

What will you do when roads are unusable due to flooding now and you need to get to hospital?

I don’t support JSO but it’s wrong to say they’re the ones who are causing the most damage and inconvenience.

Perhaps if politicians made long term plans it could help, but to just say ‘future generations’ will sort it out is disgusting.

Exactly

So we are all pretty much stuck on a treadmill, we have to go to work, drive, get transportation, go to hospital, have heating on etc. Here we all are, bickering with each other on our phones and laptops, with our heating on, cars parked outside, and most of us have to get up tomorrow and live life to pay our bills and stay alive. We don’t have time or the sick/holiday pay packages to go and protest, I imagine everyone who is actively able to help climate change doesn’t use technology, so won’t be here commenting.

So to all those who are shouting at us lot who are pissed of with these public school tossers interrupting our lives that we are trapped in, what EXACTLY DO YOU WANT US TO DO ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? I’ve seen no suggestions, and I’ve got work tomorrow because there is no option for me and others to do anything differently!

Tell politicians that you care about green legislation. We can change this but we need to prioritise it. Now.

There won't be homes, schools, work, hospitals if it's all wiped out by a huge hurricane will there.

People will be competing for resources like water. It's fucking scary and we need to act now.

why aren’t the net zero doomsters doing anything to stop our prime farmland being swallowed up by non recyclable Chinese made solar panels, or stopping councils and corporations from spraying and chopping down trees.

It has to be joined to action, of course. I do think that if we all did whatever we can (which, admittedly, for some isn't much, as it requires energy, time and resources), we could make a difference.

All the ones I know are doing those things to, where necessary.

People won't genuinely care until it starts to affect them directly such as severe water shortages, and extreme heat .

tobee · 29/09/2024 15:47

I still try to do "my bit" @Chipsintheair. Just in case. But on a wider scale it seems like a lost cause for the average individual at the moment.

Most of social media seems to be about saying "I'm marvellous and you're shit". And this topic doesn't seem to be an exception in that regard 🤷🏻‍♀️

tobee · 29/09/2024 15:48

Yes i agree it's the human condition @Fengipack

True, there needs to be more understanding. Where I live it's easy to get around without a car and we have recycling and composting collections, for example. But it's very difficult here to shop for locally-grown produce.

Plenty of people live in areas where driving is a necessity and there are few recycling options.

Many are struggling with immediate worries about food banks, so can't focus on other issues.

We need to understand and support one another rather than blame.

(Having said that, a minority of more powerful people really don't care and are causing more emissions than the rest put together! )

It’s worked . It’s got people talking about climate change

No it hasn’t. People were talking about climate change anyway. Ed Miliband (the Energy Secretary) has been talking about it for decades.

All this lot have achieved is some anti-protest laws.

I also don't understand why there is no movement among young people to live without smartphones, when you think of all the negative consequences of their manufacture, the mining, the electricity needed... Young people have, at various times, engaged in "sacks and ashes" behaviour. Yet the silence in this area is deafening.

Likewise, many people everywhere engage in noise pollution with watching films on public transport, music out loud, constant phone calls. Yet no chastisement ever from a single "environmentally concerned" individual or "celebrity"?

My smartphone is six years old and still in good nick (credit to Sony for producing good quality products). Modern life needs them.

I'd be more concerned about car use if I were you. The embodied emissions of a car when it rolls off of the production line are 5-6tonnes. That's before you even put any fuel in it or consider the land use and noise pollution of the things. The more people who sell their cars and cycle to work/school/the shops the better.

People have already answered your question. There won't be any future generations needing to get to hospital - if the current generation are killed by being prevented from getting to hospital.

I'm still waiting for one of the "it's ok to stop other people including children getting to hospital" posters to answer a question that's been asked several times.

How does stopping vulnerable people get to hospital stop climate change? (Especially when it actually is very unenvironmentally friendly to delay traffic causing extra pollution).

Why aren't JSO practicing what they preach? Why are they still using anything made with oil?

Why do some of them go on long haul flight holidays but want to block airports to stop other people have their once a year holiday?

Why aren't they doing something constructive and positive (I made some suggestions upthread) instead of causing harm, distress, and antagonising people?

HotPotato123 · 29/09/2024 17:53

If some JS protester stopped my seriously ill child from getting to hospital, I would drag them out the road or run over/round them.

I actually cared about environmental issues until JSO, now I would be ashamed to be associated with them. I do my own wee bit. Which is probably nothing in the grand scheme, but Atleast I’m not denying ill people hospital treatment.

I guess if you don’t do anything about it then it doesn’t do any good. I think just avoiding ‘nay saying’ is something. I think anyone that posts things about not caring, or doing whatever they want or denying the science are actually doing harm. So anyone that does that, can just stop and that will help. Talking about it is good. Signing related petitions and letting your MP know it’s matters to you helps. And then cutting consumption.

Ok. So, regardless of the rights or wrongs of JSOs actions;

1: threatening violence is pretty vile no matter how you feel.
2: you know that there are lots of organisations campaigning about climate change? WWF, RSPB, National Trust, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, etc etc.
3: if you don’t care about climate breakdown as a reaction to one group whose actions you don’t like then that’s simply illogical.

Windchimesandsong · 29/09/2024 18:05

I agree. Violence is wrong. Including stopping ill people getting hospital - which is a violent act.

What? How did you get to that from what I’ve written? 😂

I was just saying that violence is never an acceptable thing apart from reasonable force in self defence.

I haven’t shared an opinion on JSOs tactics.
