To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

It would only be unreasonable NOT to buy a 3 year old dinosaurs for Christmas.

Dinosaurs are the best.

outdamnedspots · 28/09/2024 11:06

Ffs, of course not. Dd wanted Brio train tracks and dinosaurs for her 3rd birthday!

Bunnycat101 · 28/09/2024 11:07

It’s this sort of shit that starts the path of girls only doing certain subjects or girls having to be one sort of type etc. my youngest loved dinosaurs at 3 - really enjoyed books about them, toys etc. she also loves a doll. Oldest was never particularly interested- she was more drawn to space. It’s so important to feed and cultivate the things they like and have a natural interest in.

There is a skeleton of one in the National History Museum and they are huge!
I mean REALLY huge.

It will take tons and tons of wrapping paper and it definitely won't fit under your tree.

😂😂😂😂😂

I'm incredibly childish a girl who's pushing 50, I would be thrilled to get anything dinosaur related for Christmas. Your friend is bonkers.

I'm 44 and female and I wear dinosaur tshirts and jumpers. I play Jurassic World on Xbox and I adore the Jurassic Park franchise, watch them through most months.

Your mate is a knob.

Encourage girls in all things STEM!

I think you might be me, from two years in the future! (I am 42, but everything else you said absolutely applies to me.)

MsSquiz · 28/09/2024 11:10

I forget how old DD1 was when she got a box of dinosaurs to play with, but she's almost 5 and DD2 is 2.5 and they both regularly play with their dinosaurs, sometimes making up stories with bluey, peppa or paw patrol figures too! DD2 also has dinosaur pjs and I'm considering redecorating her bedroom soon to dinosaurs

I have a knitted dinosaur jumper and a cardigan with dinosaur buttons.

One of the greatest ones was Mary Anning, who was responsible for a large number of "firsts" in finding previously unknown dinosaurs

Pedant alert for pub trivia quizzes - Mary Anning did not discover any dinosaurs at all, @Allergictoironing .

Dinosaurs are land reptiles with an upright stance (like birds have) rather than the sprawling stance of lizards and crocodilians.
Anning discovered marine reptiles - her discoveries of ichthyosaurs are famous. If it’s a pterosaur or a marine reptile, it’s not a dinosaur.

Palaeontology is for everyone , OP. Why not pick her up a fossil as part of her Christmas presents? I loved having one as a small child (I used to bury it a lot and “dig it up” to wild applause from my toys)

Thanks everyone! I suspected as much but I just had a moment of self doubt, not sure why. I mean she followed it up with a laughing emoji so it was sort of a jokey comment too; but also has made me feel a bit judged.

This post is nuts. Who cares if they're being "judged" by some idiot with a clearly nonsense position?

Being judged is nothing to give two hoots about unless it's by a judge, and they have the power to send you down. Being judged by the dinosaur police... not so much.

sparkleghost · 28/09/2024 11:13

You are paying attention to and cultivating her interests, which she will only appreciate and thank you for when she’s older. Dinosaurs are educational too!

Sounds like your friend either has some very outdated gendered views on what little girls or little boys “should” play with - or if she has her own dc then perhaps this reflects some insecurity / inadequacy she feels (maybe she feels she is not encouraging a wide range of interests, hasn’t started her Christmas shopping yet, has been less thoughtful about her gift buying etc).

Either way, ultimately her opinion is irrelevant - it’s DD that counts. When you see her little face on Christmas Day all thoughts of snidey remarks will be forgotten.

TheMousePipes · 28/09/2024 11:14

My did had the most beautiful dinosaur swimsuit when she was little. We all mourned it when she grew out if it because it was just so fucking cool!

Isobel201 · 28/09/2024 11:14

I have an adult sized nighty with dinosaurs on, I thought it looked like a good fun design. Boys or girls can enjoy them.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 10:25

Except that's not quite what I asked, is it🙄

I asked if anything about it was "odd" because that comment threw me. I'm still buying them regardless; my question was about the oddness or otherwise of it.

The question the thread asks is:

Am I being unreasonable to buy my 3 year old daughter dinosaurs for Christmas?

The answer is so obvious as to make the question ridiculous.

I think when they are older it becomes very gendered. At 3 they aren't aware but by 5 most kids are going down the toys of their gender. Not many 5 year old boys play with dolls or like pink, unicorns and rainbows. Most 5 year old girls prefer girls stuff to cars, trains etc. Sad but that's the way it is. It is helpful to have gendered suggestions when buying for school aged kids. Obviously if you know what item you are looking for you can be more specific and ignore the generalised gender suggestions

Oh God, its sex not gender. If it was truly gender, there would be 892 choices to cover each gender and more added each day.

And do the girls gravitate to pink and dolls or are they subtly pushed towards pink and dolls?
Do boys really all want to play football and dinosaur or are they told that pink is girly?

When I grew up I was a tomboy, I wore coded boy clothes and played with coded boys toys and boy games. And no one cared. Not a single person told my mum I should wear dresses and play with dolls. And if they had she would have ignored them. Which is as it should be.
Let children be children, let them play with any toy that they like. As long as its age appropriate.

Respond to her with 'Had no idea you were such a sexist lol' and a laughing emoji.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 11:17

Your comments are really making me smile! Going to see what other dino themed stuff I can get for DD... Might draw the line at the life size one from the National History museum though - DH might have something to say about that 😂

Fair point!

Thank goodness DH was happy to accompany Ds and his doll on many walks, trips to the park etc.

Not all men are sexist knobs.

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2024 11:20

Please keep an eye on the situation and don't let your friend shame your DD for her interests. Kids pick up on that sort of thing. I'll never forget having my fossil collection chucked into the garden because 'thats where stones belong'.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/09/2024 11:21

The vast majority of 3 year old girls who like dinosaurs grow up to be perfectly normal adults, but it's important to be aware of the risks.

I liked dinosaurs when I was that age, and I grew up.to be a biologist and a feminist. (TBF, the second one is more likely to be from the toy cars than the dinosaurs.)

Seriously, your friend is a sexist idiot, your daughter is fine, dinosaurs are awesome, and it's an interest that encourages confidence in reading and spelling long words which is an excellent transferable skill.

HappyMummaOfOne · 28/09/2024 11:24

My daughter is having a dinosaur themed birthday party tomorrow (will be 3) so she much also be “odd” 😂
There are some lovely girl dino books, clothes, toys so no they are definitely not just for boys 🙄
Your friend is very strange!

It doesn't have to be this way...

TorroFerney · 28/09/2024 11:33

Is she quite thick? Sorry that's rhetorical she obviously is and as such I'd be evaluating my friendship to be honest.

HotSource · 28/09/2024 11:35

SevenKingsMustDie · 28/09/2024 10:05

Dress DD in this the next time you see your friend!

See, I wouldn’t have bought that for my Dd.

It starts from the premise that girls might not like Dinos . Why should a girl have to even consider that dinos might not be for girls?
Why does the Dino have to have a pink bow on its tail to denote its suitability for girls to play with?
Why does the girl in the picture have to have a pink bow?

Same old shit.
