To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

My daughter is 27 and had dinosaurs when younger, still can name them all. She also likes dragons too 😁

By the way your friend might be surprised to know that around half of all dinosaurs were actually female.

And the NB ones too!

Bryony Page - who won an Olympic gold medal for trampolining this summer - wrote her degree thesis on dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are definitely for girls!

jellybe · 28/09/2024 10:48

Your friends are the odd one. for our DD's 4th Christmas she got a load of toy trains from her uncle's as that's what she wanted. It wasn't like having a boy it was like having a normal girl who had a lot of different interests. Gender stereotypes are so harmful and I'd not be happy that a friend was trying to enforce them in my kid.

Nerdymummy · 28/09/2024 10:49

My teenager adored dinosaurs as a toddler. She was obsessed with the show dinosaur train and wanted to be a palaeontologist. I always bought my daughter and son what they liked and ignored the gendering of toys. Your friend is being silly.

Story time - when I was younger I had loads of Barbies. When I had my daughter, she played with those Barbies. They then got put in storage as she out them. She is now 18 and I have a son who is 8. We moved home so I got them out of storage (to store at our home) my daughter - 18! Wanted to look at them and had a play. I posted a photo and a friend messaged me to say "shame (son) isn't a girl, then you could of passed them down"
I let rip - firstly I did pass them down. Secondly son played with them too. Had a blast. Thirdly she knows my trouble I had having our 2nd child.

Toys aren't gendered.

Fescue · 28/09/2024 10:52

Buy her the Schleich dinosaurs. Over the years she can then add to them and what starts out as a toy becomes a collection. And they will go up in value.

Dressedilemma · 28/09/2024 10:52

My 12 year old DD still loves dinosaurs 🤷‍♀️ One of her favourite t-shirts has a triceratops on it, unfortunately it's one of her brother's old ones. Next used to do some lovely dinosaur clothes aimed at young girls, she had pj's, a dress, leggings set, tunic, underwear etc

AutumnGarland · 28/09/2024 10:52

Your friends are really odd. Of course girls can like dinosaurs.

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 10:52

Thanks all for your replies! They've spurred me on - I've just bought the cutest dinosaur bedding from Dunelm for her too, can't wait to see her face when I put it on 😁

Get rid of your sexist friend.

It’s hard to be friends with someone this dumb.

BalmyLemons · 28/09/2024 10:54

Unless you're planning on opening a home Jurassic Park/World, you're not being unreasonable. Girls very rarely grow penises if you buy them toy dinosaurs no matter what she has heard.

Demonhunter · 28/09/2024 10:55

Also David Lammy thinks women are dinosaurs who hoard rights, so it's good that girls are taking an interest 😂

Just had a look on amazon and interesting that many of the options that come up say "for boys". Which is odd, why is amazon deciding that? 😬

I think when they are older it becomes very gendered. At 3 they aren't aware but by 5 most kids are going down the toys of their gender. Not many 5 year old boys play with dolls or like pink, unicorns and rainbows. Most 5 year old girls prefer girls stuff to cars, trains etc. Sad but that's the way it is. It is helpful to have gendered suggestions when buying for school aged kids. Obviously if you know what item you are looking for you can be more specific and ignore the generalised gender suggestions

Cakencookieobsessed · 28/09/2024 10:56

Your friend sounds stupid. I assume you're not, so why even ask this question?

DinosaurMunch · 28/09/2024 10:58

I would just reply to your friend that they are pink sparkly dinosaurs. That will reassure her

zeibesaffron · 28/09/2024 10:58

Why are you even thinking about this 😀 of course its fine!! There are many Women paleontologists and palentobiologists out there - its a fascinating world for young children.

Your friend’s the odd one!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 28/09/2024 10:59

My daughter got married in a dress covered with dinosaurs, with dinosaur shoes, and dinosaurs in her bouquet and the wedding party button holes.

Hyperbowl · 28/09/2024 10:59

Your friend is weird. Dinosaurs are amazing whether you’re a girl or a boy and it’s so fun and educational.

Trinity65 · 28/09/2024 11:00

Absolutely
Go for it

NicoleSkidman · 28/09/2024 11:00

Your friend is a dick.

PinkyFlamingo · 28/09/2024 11:01

Come on surely you know the answer to this!

NavyJumperWithStars · 28/09/2024 11:01

Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl.

What the fucking fuck????

Your friend needs her head examined, what a totally ignorant and facile idiot.

HTH.

Buy your dd dinosaurs and ditch the weird friend.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/09/2024 11:04

There is a skeleton of one in the National History Museum and they are huge!
I mean REALLY huge.

It will take tons and tons of wrapping paper and it definitely won't fit under your tree.
