Should I phone in sick on Monday

Have a very bad cold, sore throat along with nausea. Went to work today (I work alongside my colleague in nursery kitchen just us two but she’s on holiday gets back to work Weds afternoon) however I felt very bad with my cold, sneezing & felt sick twice as well. I am thinking of phoning in sick on Monday to Weds of next week however I’m not sure if my boss would be ok with that as work colleague is holiday and I’m expected to be in but at the same time I feel very unwell and can’t work in kitchen the way I feel right now. AIBU to think it’s not really my issue and they would have to find someone to cover over the 3 days I be off sick? Or AIBU to actually be off sick for 3 days

Am I reading this right? You prepared food for babies and toddlers and were throwing up at the same time. If I was a parent, I'd be absolutely furious about how reckless you have been.

Me too!!

Rest over the weekend and see how you feel on Monday morning.
You might be feeling much better by Monday.

iwfja · 27/09/2024 21:36

If you're going to skive be off sick Monday to Wednesday you are going to have to get your story straighter than this nonsense you have posted on here.
"I felt sick" .... "oh, I mean I threw up".
Right....
So what was it then?

Totally ridiculous to be planning to be off sick for three days next week when it's only Friday.
Surely you see how you are over the weekend. If you are still throwing up on Sunday then you will have to call in sick on Monday because you shouldn't be working with food with some kind of gastro bug.
Most likely you will be a lot better by Sunday and can go to work as normal.

if you're sick you are sick! Doesn't matter the circumstances

I think I have the same thing. A bad cold, really sore throat and I’ve had waves of nausea too. I’ve tested negative for covid. I feel awful. Having a cold doesn’t mean you can’t feel terrible; no two colds are the same, and the same one will affect people differently. I didn’t even notice any symptoms when I had Covid a couple of years ago; I only knew I had it because I was testing daily due to being a contact.

But it is far too early to make a decision about next week. I don’t believe OP has been sick, just that the story has been changed based on the replies.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

If you work in a nursery kitchen, then you shouldn’t be working if you vomited.

It will likely be tough for them to get cover if both you and your colleague are off next week. So, I’d do your best to get better for Monday by taking vitamins/iron to boost your immune system and getting plenty of rest/sleep and drinking plenty of water over the weekend. I suggest also taking a COVID test.

Hopefully the nausea/vomiting will have cleared up by Monday and you’ll be over the worst of the cold. But if you still feel too sick to work, then you should call in sick.

When I said I felt sick I meant actually being sick so sorry about confusion
If I was to phone in Monday (if I am not well still mainly cos of sickness) AIBU for that knowing my work colleague is away

No YANBU for calling in sick when your colleague is away. If you’re not well then you’re not well, it’s up to your employer to have a contingency plan for those situations, it’s not your problem.

YABU for calling in sick for three days in advance. Most places of work expect you to call in sick each day of the sickness, depending on how you feel each day.

The fact you want to call in sick for the three days until your colleague gets back from holiday makes me wonder if there’s more to it.

You're changing your story as you go!!

Completely disingenuous, you're taking the absolute piss.

FasterMichelin · 27/09/2024 22:35

I smell BS.

ThatMakesSense · 28/09/2024 08:43
