Should I phone in sick on Monday

Have a very bad cold, sore throat along with nausea. Went to work today (I work alongside my colleague in nursery kitchen just us two but she’s on holiday gets back to work Weds afternoon) however I felt very bad with my cold, sneezing & felt sick twice as well. I am thinking of phoning in sick on Monday to Weds of next week however I’m not sure if my boss would be ok with that as work colleague is holiday and I’m expected to be in but at the same time I feel very unwell and can’t work in kitchen the way I feel right now. AIBU to think it’s not really my issue and they would have to find someone to cover over the 3 days I be off sick? Or AIBU to actually be off sick for 3 days

There is a high chance you'll be better by Monday. A mild illness like you're describing certainly won't need planning to be off four or five days from now.

Mmhmmn · 27/09/2024 20:18

Why don’t you see how you feel on Sunday evening. You might be a power better by then.

It doesn't matter what your boss thinks, if you're ill you're ill.

I'm self-employed and I've been off two weeks with an illness, it can't be helped.

It’s Friday, I understand giving a heads up about Monday just incase but trying to call off half of next week this far in advance is a piss take

RuthW · 27/09/2024 20:21

How could you possibly know Fri night how you will feel Mon morning?

Jewelanemone · 27/09/2024 20:21

Sounds like you fancy a little 3-day break and have been sowing the seeds today.

Sorry forgot to add that I was going to wait until Monday but if I still wasn’t up for it & not feeling any better then I would be off for 2-3 days

But why? Do your illnesses follow a different timeline to other peoples?

So were you cooking and vomitting today ? I think today is when you should have went home...you have probably infected all.the children...

VictoryOrDeath · 27/09/2024 20:24

Literally no one confuses feeling sick and being sick, and no one who works in food prep doesn't know about the 48h rule 🧐.

So you have a cold and threw up at work twice? And you work in a nursery kitchen? You should have left the moment you were first sick. Do you have a food hygiene certificate?

She should have been sent home. Which is down to her employer.

How old are the children @ML5

EveryOtherNameTaken · 27/09/2024 20:29

Unreal. It's Friday and you have a cold and been sick. Just wait! You'll probably be OK.

Only if her employer knew. They can't send her home if they don't know she's throwing up. I would bet anything that if they did know they would have sent her home straight away. I've spent years working in hospitality and sickness and food is not something an employer messes with. Even when short staffed.

Feeling sick and nauseas is not the same as throwing up.

If you've actually been sick you need to apply the 48 hour rule.

If you are unwell Monday you obviously call in sick Monday. See how you feel Tuesday.

If you were sick Monday am I'd expect you to ring in sick for the days you needed to remain at home due to the d and v policy. (Some places it's 24 hours).

I always find that when you plan to remain ill and be off it makes you feel worse because you want to be too ill to go in! Not actually worse but you over exacerbate to yourself how well you actually feel.

Dita73 · 27/09/2024 20:45

Is this for real?! You’ve got a bloody cold! It’s only Friday for crying out loud, you’ll be fine. Just grow up and get on with it

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/09/2024 20:49

You're totally at it.

VictoryOrDeath · 27/09/2024 20:50

Now you mention it, I think I'm getting a migraine that means I'll need next Thursday off work.

Nothanks17 · 27/09/2024 20:51

You will only know monday morning if you are fit for work with cold/flu. You might have the feels sunday night that its a no go and would be nice to give a heads up but unless you have a long term illness you can't really tell yet. Don't feel bad if you can't work. Rest this weekend

Papyrophile · 27/09/2024 20:55

No, you should turn up and work your shift.

I agree. I'm sure by tomorrow you'll be past the worst of it.

Wonkywinky · 27/09/2024 20:57

You should have gone home today.
