Should I phone in sick on Monday

Have a very bad cold, sore throat along with nausea. Went to work today (I work alongside my colleague in nursery kitchen just us two but she’s on holiday gets back to work Weds afternoon) however I felt very bad with my cold, sneezing & felt sick twice as well. I am thinking of phoning in sick on Monday to Weds of next week however I’m not sure if my boss would be ok with that as work colleague is holiday and I’m expected to be in but at the same time I feel very unwell and can’t work in kitchen the way I feel right now. AIBU to think it’s not really my issue and they would have to find someone to cover over the 3 days I be off sick? Or AIBU to actually be off sick for 3 days

You might feel much better in a couple of days, why on earth are you planning what to do now?

UpUpUpU · 27/09/2024 19:55

OP is only say she was sick now because she’s getting both barrels. I bet a custard cream she’s got diarrhoea now too…

MushMonster · 27/09/2024 19:55

So sorry you are feeling this unwell OP.
Have plenty of rest this weekend.
Then assess how you are on Monday.
You can give the heads up to your manager that you are feeling under the weather, that depends on how good your relationship with them is. But you do not know yet how you will feel by then.

ML5 · 27/09/2024 19:56

When I said I felt sick I meant actually being sick so sorry about confusion
If I was to phone in Monday (if I am not well still mainly cos of sickness) AIBU for that knowing my work colleague is away

It sounds like you've already decided you'll be off 'Mon to Weds' next week.
Are you looking for agreement from everyone?

It's Friday night. Stay in bed all weekend, dose up and you may feel better by Monday. Hope you feel better soon.

Forget about your colleague. If you're too sick then phone in. If you aren't then don't.

YABU for staying cooking food for babies while throwing up. If you are not sick again you don't need to stay off, if you are still sick it's irrelevant wether or not your colleague is in work, you do not go into work when being sick, it's wrong.

Spasisters · 27/09/2024 19:58

This to me reeks of someone who has a cold, feels a bit meh and can’t be bothered covering the holiday anymore because it’s harder work. It’s a cold and nausea, most probably from being blocked up. Now it’s changed to being sick twice as opposed to feeling sick twice.
If you are truly unwell come Monday, you call in and have nothing to feel guilty about, if u are sick your sick.
If you feel any form of guilt it means you probably could manage so you feel guilty.

itwasnevermine · 27/09/2024 19:59

I have a cold. Sore throat, stuffed nose, sneezing, headache. I'm getting on with life because I certainly can't afford three days missed pay!!

DollopOfFun · 27/09/2024 19:59

Here's a novel idea- if you wake up on Monday and you're sick, ring in sick.

I'd get your story straight though, if you change it half as much as you have on this thread you'll make yourself look daft, and less than honest.

I assume you have taken your food safety certificates? You KNOW you cannot work with a gastro bug whether your colleague is off or not.

It probably won’t matter though as all the kids will be off as you kindly shared your bug whilst cooking for them.

It amazes me how some people get through life.

P.S I don’t believe for one second you have been sick. You are changing your story to not appear so unreasonable

Tink3rbell30 · 27/09/2024 20:01

You don't need 3 days off next week if you're feeling unwell right now.

Sounds like you changing your story to try to justify yourself

Jellybeanz456 · 27/09/2024 20:02

O behave you don't know how you will feel by then an surely you will have started to get over the worst. Sounds like your trying to get out off working alone if you ask me.

WinterMorn · 27/09/2024 20:05

This is the most bizarre and piecemeal type story I have heard in a long time!

Ohnobackagain · 27/09/2024 20:05

@ML5 if you are being sick then you should not be preparing food. Especially not in a nursery. You shouldn’t return to work until 48 hours after last sickness event, at least I think that’s what the NHS advice is. If you are sick tomorrow but not Sunday you could return on Tuesday.

Calliopespa · 27/09/2024 20:07

I think you’ve got a trip planned?

It’s stuffy nose btw.
Stuffed sounds like you are keeping things up it.

But what is really going on op? Are you sounding us out before you embark on a plan?

Cynic17 · 27/09/2024 20:11

No! You're clearly not sick enough to be off work now, let alone in 3 or 4 days' time.
Just be honest - your want to skive off.

StormingNorman · 27/09/2024 20:12

I don’t think you can predict on Friday that you will be sick in 3-5 days time. I think you can’t be arsed to do your work and cover for your colleague while she’s on holiday…so YABU.

Thfrog · 27/09/2024 20:12

So you have a cold and threw up at work twice? And you work in a nursery kitchen? You should have left the moment you were first sick. Do you have a food hygiene certificate?

Calliopespa · 27/09/2024 20:13

Thfrog · 27/09/2024 19:48

Feeling sick is not always synonymous with vomiting.

Does your work have a policy on working with vomiting? Some places say you can't work 48 hours from your last incidence of vomiting

In that case op, you need to time your vomiting for Monday (wink wink! 😉)

Exactly you've gone in too soon with the vomit unless your planning on keeping it up for 3 days

YABU for being an employed adult and not knowing your sickness guidance.
