I have come to terms with olive oil being the same price as a bottle of wine with the reasoning that the bottle of wine will only last a couple of days but the oil will last for ages. I acknowledge this is very first world, privileged reasoning.

@HappierTimesAhead

I'll keep that in mind too (not that I buy wine, but I'll exchange it for 'coffee' in my head!!

I spend enough on coffee (beans for home & drinking it out) & I really need good quality olive oil for my very restricted eating (for health reasons), so I try not to begrudge the expense.

But a hell of a lot of wages have too
Yeah I feel so spoilt with my 1% pay rise - I might blow the lot on a litre of olive oil

This is one of those rare comments on MN that actually made me snort

Onlyonekenobe · 26/09/2024 21:00

I'm fortunate enough not to have to worry about the price of groceries. However, I refuse to pay for certain things now on principle. Teapigs teabags are an example: this has gone from somethingI always used to have in the cupboard just in case I fancied a nice herbal tea of an evening, to a stocking filler for MIL. A Christmas-only treat.

In the case of teapigs, it's not a big deal. Hardly a staple. But eggs, milk, cheese, bread. It's literally not fair.

Covidwoes · 26/09/2024 21:00

Some toilet roll seems really expensive. I saw 9 rolls the other day for £11! It was at a convenience store, but so expensive!

You have to be trolling…

I was never a big Rishi fan but when he was suggesting everyone needed to do Maths to A-Levels, I can see why. Apparently not everyone can comprehend basic principles like wage and price inflation are not the same thing.

Yeah the price of olive oil makes me gasp these days.

Yup... £16 for cold pressed large extra virgin

Yes stuff has gone up. But a hell of a lot of wages have too.5 years ago my cleaner charged £11 an hour.... now she charged £17. 5 years ago I earned £95k now I earn £150k.

Wage inflation goes hand in hand with rising prices. I don't really get why people are surprised.

You sound insufferably smug

£7.50 for a tub of Lurpak.
I can remember butter going up to a £1 for a small block…. in the 70’s. To compare, a Mars Bar cost about 3p at the time, so it’s always been expensive.
Everyone started using margarine it was absolutely putrid.
Now price inflation is just added to with retailer greed.
What shocks me is the reduction in sizes. Opened an oblong M&S pizza the other day and it was much smaller than the cardboard backing.
And NOTHING tastes as it used to.
I can remember when Cadbury’s chocolate fingers were just gorgeous. They now taste like wax.
I am showing my age, aren’t I?
DP grabbed a tiny piece of steak for himself the other night in M&S never looks at prices.
£15.60!

IsItWickedNotToCare · 26/09/2024 21:04

Bought some jelly babies for 39p at home Bargains yesterday, very tasty too...

@Phen0menon

If I was on £150,000 I wouldn't be complaining about the cost of olive oil, nor would I if I was on 1/3rd of your income.

so maybe spare a though for non high earners whose wages may not have gone up. My employer is unable to increase wages without going under. Would you prefer he let some people go instead?

you bragging helps no one.

This is exactly how I feel. It's been good in a way: we gave up fizzy drinks, rarely have a takeaway anymore, cook from scratch more, eat much healthier.

The “5p” bag charge is now 30p

In Sweden they are £1 🫣

I wish that was the case for all of us.
There are lots of cleaners who charge much less than that even in London

Eyerollexpert · 26/09/2024 21:10

I am totally out of touch with prices, I can't believe the cost of everything! I have stopped buying crisps and snacks as they are way too expensive and everything is getting smaller 🙃

xboxforlife · 26/09/2024 21:10

Don't ever order groceries on Uber eats unless it's a total emergency they never find half the stuff and then 7-10 working days for a refund so you can't even go out and replace it somewhere else. I ordered eight packs of noodles I got five.

My salary has decreased. And even then, if they expect me in the office then public transport costs have increased.

A lot of firms want you to do 2 jobs for the price of one, legal secretary/marketing assistant was one I interviewed for.

To be fair, technology and many younger lawyers doing things themselves has made the role of the legal secretary practically redundant. Hence the doubling-up with an administrative role, in this case marketing assistant, to keep it relevant.

Must be to balance out the fact that everyone uses their carrier bags to line the compost bin, so the 5p charge does absolutely nothing to deter people from using them. I actually go to the Co-op specially to stock up on carrier bags for the compost bin.

You can buy compostable bags for a 6 litre compost bin, or are co-op bags already compostable? I rarely shop there since the nearest closed.
I find them a fabulous invention, saves me washing out our tub all the time, plus I can leave it tied up on the back step for the compost fairy to take down to the big composter bin.

And now I've written compost far too often.
