co op has always been ridiculously priced for everything might as well get it delivered from Waitrose off Uber eats

There's a whole other thead about all the amazing Co-op deals there are at the moment. I love the Co-op. I shop at Lidl and top up at the Co-op.

Alohamo · 26/09/2024 21:34

Co-op again here.. £4.75 for a box of Rice Krispies! Agree with previous posts that they seem to be hit very hard with shoplifters where we are so making up the losses with breakfast cereal apparently!

It’s the black bin bag song from phoenix nights.

@BashfulClam

thank you too!

Hardknocks · 26/09/2024 21:35

Not a supermarket but the shop within the I used to work at sold PLAIN hobnobs (a standard packet) for £4.75. All the others were relatively normal prices!

One roll of Plenty kitchen roll was £4.90 at the village where I work. We use it at the shop I work at (for wiping down tattoos so can’t have cheap shit kitchen roll). We ended up switching to Asda’s brand as it was strong and a lot less extortionate! We were using three full rolls some days!

At the little Co Op where I live Cathedral City cheese is currently on offer at £2.50, but there’s only about 3 on the shelf…because they’re all in giant plastic security cases. Bizarre.

I was coming on here to say a Plenty 3 pack at Ocado is £7.25 which is bad enough, but £4.90 for one?! Fucking hell! It’s not as good as it used to be either. Quite a bit smaller and flimsier. I’ve switched to Regina Blitz but only when it’s on offer. The sheets are massive and you can tear them down the middle for smaller jobs. Which makes me sound like a weird miser but needs must and all that.

autienotnaughty · 26/09/2024 21:36

Asda

Olive oil £8.50

Track suit bottoms £5

How is it more expensive to buy oil than clothing??!!

@ConstantlyFuriosa I try to score the large rolls in half lengthwise with a kitchen knife so I end up with 2 x half sheets which are easy to rip off

do it 2/3 times over the lifetime of the roll -

skyandocean · 26/09/2024 21:40

Kitchen roll I forgot the brand name as it's one I would never buy but my goodness £8!! What does it do that the Aldi extra thick one doesn't, it's under £3
I always say go dh, I want to know the type of people that pay for the £8 roll

BashfulClam · 26/09/2024 21:42

Black bin bag song, you’ll sing it anytime you hear ‘black bin bags’

I used to work with a woman who bought expensive ones whereas I buy the cheapest and I wipe stuff up and throw it away.

Well we did spot a jar of Honey in tesco the other week which was security tagged and around £30 😲.
Could quite believe it I mean yes it must have been some special Honey, but our local Honey from the butchers is only £5.50. For the same size jar, which I think is a good price for local Honey.

I have noticed them putting the stacks in the meat section in security boxes now. But I've no idea how much they are.

It will be manuka honey it's really expensive because it can only be made in new Zealand and only about 2 months of the year. Iv never tried it as I wouldn't pay it but it's supposed to be full of antioxidants and stuff. It's like a very specialised honey 🍯

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/09/2024 21:47

BobbyBiscuits · 26/09/2024 21:32

My local co-op seems to get raided daily by determined and professional shoplifters. They just walk in and empty the booze shelves. Also the self service till doesn't notice if you forget to scan. No wonder it's so expensive!

Actually, I’m usually very down on the Co Op for their overpricing, but read something today that said they’ve lost something ridiculous like 40 million quid this year alone from shoplifting. There was a picture of yobs trying to break down the door to get in while the staff tried to hold them back.

Lots of staff have been assaulted and the thieves are absolutely blatant. So upon reflection maybe that’s why put up the prices or they need to get super hardcore security guards rather than let the staff deal with it. If I worked at the Co op I’d want Danger Money.

headstone · 26/09/2024 21:48

I’ve seen fajita box kits for over a fiver. It’s literally just a few bits of bread , a small bag of spices and a ketchup type thing inside.

Not recent and not in the UK but I once paid the equivalent of £20 for 6 sorry looking sprouts in Thailand.

I read somewhere that there is only about 200kg of Manuka honey produced a year, not enough to export !

Heavy duty black bin bags
They're long and black and slender

I wish I could edit. "Profiteering in which food producers engage" would be better!

Why can't you edit?

onwardandupwards · 26/09/2024 21:55

The local village shop today has had new freezers installed where you can buy individual frozen items for £1 each, items included fish fingers, yorkshire puddings, a small bit of frozen cookie dough and a mini pizza slice. I don't think they are going to sell much, same shop is £1.99 for 2 pints of milk.

Elphame · 26/09/2024 21:57

Greenlabelss · 26/09/2024 21:20

Baked beans are another. 2 pounds for a tin?!?!

Where on earth are you shopping? Waitrose own brand ( much nicer than any of the branded ones) are 55p a tin or 4 for £1.90. Even their fancy Duchy Organic are £1 a tin

Scentedjasmin · 26/09/2024 21:57

Bottle of Greek Olive Oil £16 from Sainsbury's today. Used to be £8. That said, 250g of bitter is down to £1.75, instead of the higher price that it used to be.

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 26/09/2024 21:57

@ConstantlyFuriosa I'm the same; I only use Regina Blitz and only when you can get three rolls for £4.75 😂
