Yes stuff has gone up. But a hell of a lot of wages have too.5 years ago my cleaner charged £11 an hour.... now she charged £17. 5 years ago I earned £95k now I earn £150k.

Wage inflation goes hand in hand with rising prices. I don't really get why people are surprised.

Hmm so you’ve had a salary increase of 55k. However most on a normal salary may have gone up 5k in that same time period if they earn the average UK salary - so you can afford the extra as you have increased your salary by 50% but most it will be a 20% increase of a lot smaller pot to begin with. So they will struggle if their salary hasn’t aligned with products that have increased over the rate of inflation substantially.

Im not saying you don’t deserve your salary , im simply saying you can’t apply the same logic to everyone.

Tittibits · 26/09/2024 20:27

In Co op- chicken for a treat for the dogs- £9.99! That’s a no from me!

DonnaBanana · 26/09/2024 20:28

Tray of Ferrero Rocher was £11.50 the other day at Co Op

Teapigs teabags £9.15!!!

Used to be around £4

Leverpool · 26/09/2024 20:29

I’ll throw in shampoo and conditioner. I’m not talking salon level L’Oreal (hair swish) but mid range stuff like Aussie for example is now £6 for a big bottle.

TinySaltLick · 26/09/2024 19:58

I bet they were good bin bags though, what were they made of - angora wool?

Could sell on Etsy as chic ponchos then. I'm so happy the coop is no longer my closest shop!

Lidl olive oil was over 7 quid the other day. I spent four quid on toothpaste at Savers (!) that irritates the inside of my mouth Confused

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 26/09/2024 20:04

Yeah the price of olive oil makes me gasp these days.

Literally just had that conversation in Aldi half an hour ago, £7.59, used to be around a fiver

I guess your highly paid job doesnt involve any awareness of the real world for most people

Messen · 26/09/2024 20:35

I love the idea that your average salary has risen by the same magnitude as £95k to £150k.

I am in the public sector in a highly specialist but not very promotable role and my pay has deflated in real terms over the last five years.

MigGril · 26/09/2024 20:35

Well we did spot a jar of Honey in tesco the other week which was security tagged and around £30 😲.
Could quite believe it I mean yes it must have been some special Honey, but our local Honey from the butchers is only £5.50. For the same size jar, which I think is a good price for local Honey.

I have noticed them putting the stacks in the meat section in security boxes now. But I've no idea how much they are.

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/09/2024 20:36

Namechange7364 · 26/09/2024 20:25

That might be true for non-public sector... For the rest of us, not so much...

Damn right. Those of us who’ve had a 20%+ real terms pay cut do care about places pricing things ridiculously.

A pack of 2 El Paso burrito wrap things over £8 in my local Tesco Express. Ridiculous.

WGACA · 26/09/2024 20:39

Co op bin bags are genuinely the best though.

Wages have not kept pace with inflation. Your situation is not everyone's. Get real.

FeelingSad2024 · 26/09/2024 20:39

Small pot of own-brand green olives, £4.75, in the Co-Op last week

Oh my Lord, read the room.

Best example of someone not getting it that I’ve seen for a while!

BunnyLake · 26/09/2024 20:43

Charlie Bingham products always seem really expensive. Lasagne £9.50 for 690g. M&S have one at £7.50(ish) for 1.5kg.

Olive Oil’s gone through the roof.

Meanwhile some of us have had a pay increase of 39p an hour in the last 5 years!

mumda · 26/09/2024 20:43

I want some olive oil but don't feel rich enough to buy some.

bluecomputerscreen · 26/09/2024 20:43

eggs
5€ for 6 (organic admittedly, but still)

Leverpool · 26/09/2024 20:48

I really don’t get how people who earn £150k don’t understand how wage inflation hasn’t in fact risen hand in hand with price inflation.

But then I reflect some people who are lacking in intelligence and EQ can still earn that salary as a TikTok influencer, thus requiring neither.

@FreeSausages this has made me sad! I love them but certainly won’t be getting them again if they’re that price!

I assume for that price they recycle for me and take the rubbish out too.
