Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

All Europeans?

Exactly - just ridiculous!

I think it is just the chip on the shoulder about the English coming through.

@IVFmumoftwo @Goldenbear Is it possible that the two of you have chips on your shoulders considering you both point blank refuse to believe the experiences of 100s of posters? Not everyone is a massive fan of England, that’s just life.

Do you honestly think that the poster they're responding to is reasonable to say 'Europeans hate the English'? What, all of them? How can that be someone's 'experience'?

Good to know you speak for the Europeans there. I'm English and I've never come across a European who dislikes me because of where I was born. Maybe it's just you who dislikes the English?

I think it's clear that some people are in denial about how their nationality is perceived abroad.
National sterotypes do exist, though usually are not accurate (see link below). Even if they were accurate it's not fair to apply them to individuals. But people do use them all the time, at least to a certain extent.

Multiple people here have noticed differences in how they're treated depending on nationality. It's very doubtful that they're all mistaken. I don't think 'Brits' are hated, but other nationalities may be seen as warmer and friendlier, rightly or wrongly.

National stereotyping happens a lot on MN by the way. Probably easier to see if you're not English. I'm Irish and have some nasty comnents lobbed my way (mostly to do with being 'uneducated' because of the language I use - language that happens to be the correct standard where I live). Some comments have been quite sarcastic - a 'what could the Irish know anyway' sort of thing. There was an IRA comment directed to a pp upthread too. Americans get a bit of a doing on here always.

This happens everywhere unfortunately and I don't really see why some English people think they're immune to it?

Very well said - in denial is correct. As an Irish person I am well aware that we are looked down upon by many nations, England very often being one of them.

Yes I am aware of that. I don't deny that quite a few hate us but you can't state a broad sweeping generalisation that all Europeans hate us. Who knows?

I mean I don't agree with the poster talking about treating all English from down south differently because they aren't friendly. Plenty are.

Many nations look down on you? But I thought you were universally adored and fawned over the second anyone heard your accent?

When was the last time you came to England? I don't deny anti Irish sentiment still exists but it is a lot better than it used to be.

Here's me thinking that you seem very defensive and it really isn't clear to me why. Why the bitterness? Maybe I'm missing your point or being ignorant but I don't really understand why you are so affronted.

It sounds prejudiced and small minded!

It's sounds like you never worked in that industry, so you can think what you like really! No skin off my nose 🤷‍♀️

'100s of posters'? I have added them up like you have but it didn't strike me as thay many, I have read many posters staying the opposite about the Europeans. In all honesty it is a digression and not really what the OP was asking but you made it about the English - I wonder why?

No, you are right, I haven't but I'm not commenting on that I'm commenting on the specifics of the patronising anti - southern England sentiment which seems a bit narrow minded but I suppose plenty of people are narrow minded in the world.

Demonhunter · 26/09/2024 12:30

Goldenbear · 26/09/2024 11:50

We do have 'tough cookies' in the south you know! My West London school was like going to school with the characters from the comedy, 'People Just Do Nothing'.

Oh some people I know from London I'd say were tough, in general, nah Southerners aren't like Northerners on that score. You can tell yourself what you want though.

I honestly think you guys are on a windup now. Have a word with yourselves! You actually think that we're in denial and that Europeans HATE English people? Like really?
And actually believe it or not every single English person I know would be totally the same with an Irish / Scottish / Italian / Australian/ whatever person as they are with each other. I'm admittedly basing this on London as that's where I live, but believe it or not probably about half our population round here comes from outside of the local area. We're all a bunch of immigrants really. We really don't bother sitting around festering in this "anti-Irish" sentiment that you seem to think we do.
You obviously hate the English. That's up to you. If you want to live out your small minded ways by judging people from where they come from then knock yourself out. My family actually came from Jamaica anyway so whether that makes me better or worse of a person in your eyes I neither know nor care but you don't speak for all Europeans. Even though you obviously believe that you do.

You're right, you are quite narrow minded because you can't see a bigger picture as to why some practices happen and why they work, a lot of it is psychological and like many industries, it's important to lean into that.

hinsy · 26/09/2024 12:34

Over recent years I've found some Europeans quite rude about Brexit. Other, general, xenophobia towards the English, not so much.

Again, I don't really understand the basis of this argument it is just people you may have known from London - I assume you aren't from London Northerners are just tougher, what is it a genetic trait!

Believe me when I say there are many Northerners that would be terrified in the school I went to at secondary level as I was most days!

No, you are just applying a theory to prejudices, dressing up an undertone of nastiness that often evolves from narrow-minded views from people who blame others for everything.
