To ask when Timmy Mallett became such a style icon for middle aged women?

Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

Is that what they said?
I've also had a different experience on FWR in the past; I've used the term TIM and, of course, considered people free to 'challenge' me; but no, MNHQ have generally thought a better move was to delete my posts and give waffly 'reasons' as to why.

Yep.

Now you’ve said that I can’t unsee it!!!!!

Obviously people should wear whatever they want but those glasses do fall into “I am so different me” cringy category. Loads of people do the big glasses chunky jewellery Pru Leith look so it’s not as alternative as people think.

I also hate dungarees and any Ollie and nic style cloth jumpsuits. Grown women looking like toddlers about to do messy play! Although really I am just jealous as I am too tall to achieve the cute arty dungaree look.

What makes you so sure that people think it's 'alternative'? Is it not possible that some people just... like the look?

Yes I guess so, people should wear what they like. But “statement” glasses, jewellery etc… do often make people look like they are trying to make a point with their clothes.

In the same way people dye their hair wacky bright colours. There’s nothing wrong with it but I don’t believe people aren’t trying to look “alternative” with their looks. More power to them I think but the alternative look is often ironically shared by a lot of people!

I dye my hair a bright-ish colour (I'm not sure it's wacky; it's not pink or green, but it is quite obviously 'dyed'. I don't think or hope it's 'alternative'; I like it because a) I don't want to look like someone trying to cover their grey and b) it suits my skin tone and eyes.

'the alternative look is often ironically shared by a lot of people!' Well, this only works if your argument that people wear certain things in the belief that they look 'alternative' is true, which is very much up for debate.

Apparently MNHQ would prefer that posts like the ‘autistic lesbian’ ones ‘be challenged rather than deleted’.

Not what I notice on the FWR boards, but there we are.

I was told I could debate/ challenge someone on if someone was dead/ murder case or missing, answer legally missing oh and they also left up lots of speculation who the "murderer" is and what they think happened...... Totally fine not deleted and how her friends had crocodile tears as "everyone knows what REALLY happened......" I believe it's still up their was another comment on the same thread that could have got interesting as it broke the law. It was on for quite a while, I reported it very quickly.Did I get a thank you? Nope

You have just described me.
I absolutely love my style, and it suits me

Yes maybe wacky is the wrong word. I think people who dye their hair pink, blue , green want to stand out. Not saying theirs anything wrong with that, I just think it’s true.

I don’t think obviously dyed hair is alternative at all. Lots of people do it for the exact reasons you describe.

GiddyRobin · 24/09/2024 15:49

Oh, you'd hate me, OP. 😁

I don't have colourful frames, but larger glasses open my face. I look back on my skinny little pairs and cringe. I've got very big eyes and they always looked cut off in the middle!

I love dungarees. I have two pairs from Lucy & Yak, bottle green and dark red. They're so comfortable, and they're very flattering. Not oversized and just right for my frame. I wear them with gasp Oxblood DMs or Birkenstocks! They're fantastic for running around, too, and no hoiking up jeans.

I also love pinafore dresses! I've got 3 - red with white patterns, black, and a mini denim one. Love wearing them with bright tights from Snag and long boots.

AND I wear harem pants! Not the drop crotch ones, but the more trouser-esque type with lovely patterns. I can't stand wearing jeans so these fit the bill wonderfully, and I have thicker cotton pairs for the colder weather too.

I wear them for me and don't give a toss what anyone thinks. They're comfortable, fun, and pretty. I couldn't be bothered going through life wearing clothes I don't like just in case someone was looking and thinking the stuff I do like is horrible. My favourite is when DS waits in the hall for me to come down and becomes delighted over which colour tights I'm wearing. "Orange today! Come and look at Mamma's orange legs!" 😁

Well yes of course they like it! Would be strange to do if they didn’t!

Gowlett · 24/09/2024 16:02

NerrSnerr, I hate those glasses. And that’s fair enough.

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to fashion.
My personal style isn’t to everyone’s taste either, fine.

Nobody’s forcing me to wear anything. Nor am I to them.

Laylastarsea · 24/09/2024 16:09

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2024 09:25

It’s really not, it’s called myopia. It’s not fashion it’s a condition.

and even if we were trying to look different and unique, why do you hate that? You sound unhappy in your life.

You've taken what I've written wrong. I love different and unique, but this look is not as everyone is copying each other or wearing it because its fashion, different and unique is often admired as it's down to the individuals true self and personality, they choose what they like to wear regardless of what's in fashion.
I'm very happy and love seeing individuality, the irony of this look is it's trying to be individual however loads are doing it

Laylastarsea · 24/09/2024 16:13

Butterworths · 24/09/2024 08:06

How do you know they think they look different? Do you think they just haven't noticed the other women dressing similarly? Do you assume all the men on the train to work are fucking idiots who haven't noticed the other men in suits or is it just women you assume are very stupid and shallow.

Yes I see tons of men with the same beards / waist coat fashion... again... clones

Laylastarsea · 24/09/2024 16:15

Goldenbear · 24/09/2024 08:46

And yet you are mocking people for wearing what they want and no I am not being defensive as I wouldn't be bold enough to wear such attire.

Not mocking at all. I've just said it makes me cringe that all of a sudden 30 mums need big glasses at the school gate yet they didnt before

Verv · 24/09/2024 16:18

When you get to vairfocal age, you need bigger glasses to accommodate the lenses as theyre covering 3 fields of vision rather than one.
You couldnt fit a vari in a moley frame.

I heard this sort of thing when a I was a goth in my teens. The thing is, those wearing the "individual but not individual" outfits don't really care.

It's still different enough from the mainstream, which might be what they're trying to avoid. My corsets and black velvet gowns were certainly different than the sea of skinny blue jeans and pastel tops in my classes.

Other people just choose their clothes because they're an alternative to the mainstream look. I don't like the gym clothes look on me, or the jeans and a naice top. Somehow it just makes me look like I'm a kid playing dress up. Luckily, there are alternatives out there that do suit me and I do like, so I wear them. And, sometimes, those alternatives become mainstream!

In my early 20s I saw girls I'd gone to school with, who'd have bullied me senseless for being a goth, wearing black nail polish, black platforms, and corset dresses with heavy eye makeup. Fashion changes. Who cares? Most people are just wearing what they like.

Wantacupoftea · 24/09/2024 16:23

cardibach · 24/09/2024 16:06

But you said it was just to be different…

It can be for more than one reason!

Alpolonia · 24/09/2024 16:58

i have hardly any eyebrows (alopecia) so like wearing glasses to hide the lack of them. Next time I’m going for a thicker rimmed pair.

You're talking mum's at the school gate? I assumed you were talking about empty nesters at the youngest.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2024 17:28

I met Timmy Mallett once. His persona is not an act for tv.

Boomer55 · 24/09/2024 17:40

I didn’t know they were any sort of icon for middle aged women lol. Ah well, you learn something every day…🙄
