To ask when Timmy Mallett became such a style icon for middle aged women?

Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

😂 So it's fashion and nowt to do with vision requirements.

'I need deeper lenses (top to bottom) that that for good vision'
So what have you done in the past when these type of huge specs were unavailable? They are a very recent thing.

Well, one year I had to buy frames from the male range to get the depth I needed. You’ve always been able to buy them. The bright colours are the fashion part.

Your glasses aren’t that good, you’re mixing up posters, 😂 case closed. You’re quoting me and then using the words of another poster. I had to do the same as another poster, I had to buy from the men’s range when letterbox glasses were fashion.

By ‘these types’ I was clearly referring to the Timmy Mallet/Cbeebies presenter dressed crew so no need to make it into a civil rights issue. It’s not that deep.

And it’s not that I don’t like their attire, or even really care that much what others wear. It’s just when I see them it comes across as inauthentic and try-hard, just like a kids tv presenter - loud and ‘sunny’. I also side-eye the 20 something men wearing ‘ironic’ mullets.

Side eye and not that deep.

We have our answer - you are 12.

They are far from recent. When M.C was wearing these i probably wasnt even born so there is no "past when large specs werent available" for me.

I suppose you can position yourself as one who is above and beyond fashion, if it pleases you to do so, but with respect, glasses are furniture for your face if you have to wear them permanently, as i do.
If i wanted to find the cheapest bog standard frames with no care about my presentation, I could, its not difficult and requires no care or attention.

What I want, is a pair that is suitable for my face size and shape, can accommodate large enough lenses to give me the best vision possible using varifocal lenses. Fashion has little to do with it but style probably does.

Vintage NHS specs have been about for donkeys, and check out the 924 model!
Well over 50 years old.

When I was in my 20s, nobody commented on my glasses. Or my 30s, or 40s.

When you get older, 40s plus, how dare you fuck off style norms, wear what you want, care less, dress for fun? The bile on here is unreal. If I'm a bit short and old and wearing bright clothes and have big varifocals SO I CAN SEE, fuck you. I shall merely flick my scarf, jangle my earrings, flip my brightly coloured old and podgy sized shirt sleeve, and ignore you. Life is too short and I still have adult children to embarrass, so i'm busy!

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 30/09/2024 20:33

When I was 15, exactly 40 years ago, I thought that this was the most beautiful man I had ever seen, and I have liked big nerdy glasses ever since.
Now I’m 55 and need reading glasses and I like big ones. I have lots of colours, as well as black ones. Guess what? I like them and they suit me.
Am I going to stop wearing them because some people on here don’t like them? Not fucking likely.
Am I alternative or individual? No idea and don’t care. Bizarre that some can’t accept that people just like what they like.

I also like jumpsuits, dungarees and coloured DMs, so hopefully that’ll annoy a few people too and make them cringe themselves inside out.

These are my new ones, happy with them
I don't have a small face and the colour works with my colouring

No, the original comment about these silly specs being fashion was directed at you. I then followed on with a comment about another post.

The examples posted above aren't the 'Timmy Mallet' type specs the OP was referring to. The closest, I guess, is the middle out of Michael Caine, but they're still not the same, and of course, the huge, thick frames look very different on the average woman's face.

As for my glasses not being 'that good' - 🤓. They do what they're supposed to do with my vision. I don't think of specs as a fashion accessory. I've worn them since I was 5. They enable me to see, when without them I'm as blind as a bat. That's all that matters to me. I don't see specs as needing to enhance or to detract. They're a sight aid.

Do people really change their specs with changes in fashion?

' I like them and they suit me.
Am I going to stop wearing them because some people on here don’t like them? Not fucking likely.' Fine and dandy - no-one's expecting otherwise.

'The bile on here is unreal. If I'm a bit short and old and wearing bright clothes and have big varifocals SO I CAN SEE, fuck you'..... Speaking of bile.

Violetparis · 01/10/2024 07:57

Morrissey's glasses and the other photo are normal glasses. I presume the OP is referring to the big, coloured frames around now, Pru Leith and Nick Ferrari wear them. Some people love them, some people think they look ridiculous, who cares, wear what you want.

Blueuggboots · 01/10/2024 08:00

I like interesting glasses! Go into most of the high street opticians and it's a sea of brown, grey, gold.....boring as hell!!!

I'm not hiding my aging face, I just like bright glasses!!

If you don't, go and buy a boring pair. Simples.

MarkWithaC · 01/10/2024 09:07

Gorgonemilezola · 27/09/2024 09:46

I have varifocals - had them for years. Always fairly bog standard frames, never needed huge frames. The big frames are in fashion at the moment, that's all. The 2 women I know who are wearing them both look slightly ridiculous. The specs are used as a descriptor by people at work - 'you know, the one with the really big glasses....' and they're all you really notice about them. Useful if you need something to hide behind I guess.

YOU think they look slightly ridiculous.
YOU think they wear them because they need something to hide behind.

Maybe they look the bomb. Maybe their loved ones think they look the bomb. Maybe they feel they stand out rather than are hidden – in fact, their glasses being used as a descriptor somewhat suggests that this is the case.

Your post is very spiteful.

Would be useful to see some photos of "normal" women wearing these "silly" glasses.
If Pru Leith is the bar here, i think some of her frames are fabulous.

Clothing has the purpose of warmth or preventing nudity, shoes stop your feet getting cut up, bags help you transport goods, coats keep you dry and glasses help you see, so using them as a "sight aid" is about as groundbreaking as using a bra to keep your tits up.
It doesnt actually elevate you above any of the women that you're sneering at.

I do agree with Cark that you sound spiteful and I wonder if there is something more to this than just other womens choice of frames.

The irony in your post is overloaded.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 01/10/2024 13:41

I love Dame Prue and her glasses, every time i see her on something she's in different glasses.

My very first pair of glasses were a sort of burgundy colour and had little diamantés on the corners. I loved them. At 11 years old I thought I was so glam!

My glasses now are just plain black, small metal frames. I hate them but I can't be arsed to get a new pair as I only wear them first thing in the morning, before I put my contacts in,when I feed the cats.

If I wore them more I'd probably get a new pair and be more adventurous(like I am with sunglasses).

It's ironic/fugly innit? Like socks and sandals and crocs etc.

I blame Pru Leith.

Isn't socks with sandals just about comfort 🤔

I think it is for most people, yes, but there's a fashion-irony version that is definitely about making a statement.

I like them!
Im not brave enough for colour and tend to be monochromatic all the time so these are mine.
The aviators in the middle are my favourites and known affectionately as the Dahmers.
The grey square ones i wear most of the time, and the top black pair i wear when WFH.
Theyre a mix between driving and digital vari lenses.

Gorgonemilezola · 01/10/2024 21:40

Doodle, they're very nice. They are not the kind of frames the OP is talking about by a long chalk.

Gummybear23 · 01/10/2024 21:44

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 23/09/2024 21:53

Exactly.

Those who think I'm being mean, it's far meaner to think that women have to hide their faces behind a massive pair of glasses as soon as they hit 40.

What makes you think they are hiding their faces?
They like them. Good for them.
Life is short.
