Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

Perhaps it's a weight related thing. We're all getting bigger so we think wearing huge glasses will make us look small in comparison.

Anniecott · 23/09/2024 21:58

I have a pair of thick black framed glasses and I bloody love them, they are very 1970's nhs style. I get a lot of compliments on them. You do you and I'll do me.

doodleschnoodle · 23/09/2024 21:59

Haha, this is me! I have large rainbow-coloured specs and wear brightly patterned tops and leggings with things like dinosaurs, dogs and ghosties on 👻 It makes me feel happy.

Gorgonemilezola · 23/09/2024 22:00

Yup - a couple of people at work have them and I can't listen to what they're saying because I'm so distracted by the ridiculous specs. Fashion victims? Dunno, but they look a bit silly.

PollyDactyl · 23/09/2024 22:04

Where does Dr Patel fit on the wheel of style for the middle aged?

What a horrible, mean spirited thread to start. If you don’t like then don’t buy them.

This.

Some of us have bad eyesight and can’t wear contact lenses for various reasons. Maybe it’s fun to wear bright coloured, larger frames. Not everyone has the same taste in things.

Magpiecomplex · 23/09/2024 22:04

You need a decent size frame to fit in enough varifocal to make them worthwhile. My frames have been getting steadily bigger since needing varifocals because it's really useful to actually be able to see.

notacooldad · 23/09/2024 22:12

Those who think I'm being mean, it's far meaner to think that women have to hide their faces behind a massive pair of glasses as soon as they hit 40.
I dont think anyone thinks women have to hide their faces when they hit 40.
It's just a case of a change in fashion.

LunaNorth · 23/09/2024 22:16

Who said anything about hiding faces? I’ve never, ever heard that given as a reason for wearing big glasses.

My big glasses actually magnify the fine lines, but I don’t mind because I like seeing.

When I see people dressed like you it makes me feel happy too, so it's a win win! 😁

Yes, Iris Apfel was ‘hiding her face’, the poor, retiring creature.

I agree OP, it's important to dress appropriately for your age- since I turned fifty, I never leave the house without a bag over my head so that passing men aren't subjected to my sa😎gging jowls.

Or, we think we look good and don't give a shit @

Violetparis · 23/09/2024 22:22

I agree, they look silly and awful.

Jb0011 · 23/09/2024 22:22

Fuck off, I've been wearing massive glasses and sunglasses for 20 years now,(im 40)because I like them. Mine are currently more deirdre Barlow right now though

Totallymessed · 23/09/2024 22:22

Apologies for the confusing post, I have covid 😂and a fever

Crispynoodle · 23/09/2024 22:24

While I wouldn't wear the silly glasses I can put my hand up to yellow and patent hot pink DMs, dungarees and a lot of different coloured shoes...

Fancypopop · 23/09/2024 22:25

Er, but the examples you gave in your OP of people wearing these glasses were both men 🤣

Compash · 23/09/2024 22:26

Meh. Very short-sighted all my life, wore contact lenses until Graves Disease gave me painful dry eyes (and was in danger of actually losing my sight for while); in varifocals for the last ten years, big frames are essential for decent vision. Having also survived cancer, I give zero fucks about pleasing anyone other than myself. 🤓🤩😎

They sound fantastic!

Bookishnerd · 23/09/2024 22:28

This is such an odd thread. I don’t have big glasses, just ‘normal’ ones, but have coveted that style for a while. I think they look fun.

To quote Groove Armada, if everybody looked the same, we’d get tired of looking at each other.

If the big glasses catch on any more we will all look the same. Perhaps go for really small ones instead? Or a monocle? You don't see those anymore.

doodleschnoodle · 23/09/2024 22:31

@Enoughwiththisshit Aww, that's great! I do some volunteer work with kids and they really love the bright colours too. It seems to make me a bit more approachable than some of the other adults too, as they see me as less of a grown-up probably!

My older daughter has some matching leggings too, and she likes to coordinate us sometimes, which I'm sure will strike fear and loathing into the hearts of many, but she gets so excited when we are both in our dog leggings Grin

Clothes can be fun, and fun is different things to different people!

thinkingndrinking · 23/09/2024 22:32

Deidre Barlow is my style icon.

You do you OP. Just don't slag off the choices of others.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 23/09/2024 22:32

Maybe they like them and quite rightly don’t give a flying fuck about what other people think of their style choices?
