To ask when Timmy Mallett became such a style icon for middle aged women?

Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

I don't think women who wear these glasses are trying to hide their faces, or hide behind them?

Are you on the wind up op??

I agree. If women were wanting to hide they wouldn’t pick such noticeable glasses surely

Toddler's clothes are:

  1. practical
  2. comfortable
  3. fun/visually appealing

At what age should women and girls put aside practical, comfortable and fun clothes?

I'd say both males and females should pack the dungarees away when they start reception class😂

"Sad and enslaved lives"

This is a hilariously histrionic reaction to someone saying that they don't like glasses with OTT plastic frames.

Except that's not what you've said is it?

You haven't just said you don't like them. You've ridiculed those who do wear them and have implied they are in some way hiding...

Yes two removed I knew nothing about, one for the gossip comment told them i stand by it 😁
Agree the comment that we've reported should go x

They're "looking into it still" 🙄

Minimising the impact of your statements, and suggesting the one standing up to you is unreasonable. Thats what a bully would say.

Defend your nastiness some more, please do.

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2024 12:34

Plus you’re the one who started a thread slating people who wear glasses, not so we can see clearly but to hide our aging faces.

It’s quite easy to hide being a total bastard on the inside but you didn’t do so well on that today.

Posting on Mumsnet AIBU that a style of spectacles "looks daft" is not bullying or nastiness.

If you feel it contravenes the guidelines of the site, please feel free to report it. Otherwise, your posts are ludicrously OTT.

It's just fashion isn't it really
I thought these before glasses looked great (and my eyebrows) but now I look back like oh my, what was I thinking
You can still see my face in my newer ones

You also said women were being conned into wearing them. Poor old dears, not knowing what they like or what suits them.
Lots of things people post are sad/enraging/reflect badly on them without contravening the rules of the site.

Sure. Saying people look daft and old because of their eye condition isn’t bullying or nasty?

As I am, apparently, a "total bastard on the inside", you might wish to take this with a pinch of salt, but:

Your new glasses are lovely! They suit your face and work with your features. Whereas the example posted with the woman from Swedish Death Cleaning, those glasses completely take over her face.

I love a big cutler and gross frame, particularly aviators and 1386 style.
Cant say i give a fuck whether other people like them or not, because i wear what i like not what anyone else likes.

Edited

But why?

I understand why you might not want to wear them, but why do you think every other man, woman and child in the country (planet?) should stop wearing them? Why would you care?

(I don't actually own any dungarees, and am currently wearing a very dull jeans and Henley top outfit, but it puzzles me why someone would be that bothered)

LunaNorth · 24/09/2024 13:36

Apparently MNHQ would prefer that posts like the ‘autistic lesbian’ ones ‘be challenged rather than deleted’.

Not what I notice on the FWR boards, but there we are.

Hopper123 · 24/09/2024 13:41

It's just a fashion trend, the 80's/early 90's has made a comeback including the bright colours and loud, eclectic styles, much like the huge drawn on eyebrows things will swing back again to more subdued tones although i hope the fully grey or white house style never makes a comeback. I wouldn't wear them personally as I would feel silly but I actually think some people carry them off fantastically.

Timmy mallet made me chuckle though ahhhh what a childhood we had 😂

Is that what they said?
I've also had a different experience on FWR in the past; I've used the term TIM and, of course, considered people free to 'challenge' me; but no, MNHQ have generally thought a better move was to delete my posts and give waffly 'reasons' as to why.

Itllbealrightonthenight · 24/09/2024 13:52

@PuttingOnTheKitsch

Hillarious!
I also find most things from Balenciaga highly amusing.

I'm jesting.... obviously people must be free to wear whatever they want...

There's lots of things fashion wise I think are ridiculous and look silly but I don't actually think people should be stopped wearing what they want!

MrsChestnut · 24/09/2024 14:01

Does it really matter? I wear large glasses not to hide my aging face but

A- because I think they suit me better as I have a large/round face (little slim ones make me look like a mole imo)

& B - because I spent years being embarrassed about and bullied for wearing glasses as a child and wearing more striking ones feels like a bit of a “fuck yeah I wear glasses”

Itllbealrightonthenight · 24/09/2024 14:02

Wantacupoftea · 24/09/2024 14:04

Now you’ve said that I can’t unsee it!!!!!

Obviously people should wear whatever they want but those glasses do fall into “I am so different me” cringy category. Loads of people do the big glasses chunky jewellery Pru Leith look so it’s not as alternative as people think.

I also hate dungarees and any Ollie and nic style cloth jumpsuits. Grown women looking like toddlers about to do messy play! Although really I am just jealous as I am too tall to achieve the cute arty dungaree look.

NerrSnerr · 24/09/2024 14:04

Gowlett · 23/09/2024 21:36

I hate them! Worn with that neon resin statement jewellery (earrings or necklace) plus toddler-style printed cotton jumpsuit / dungarees. And Birkenstocks or coloured DMs.

I assume no one is forcing you to wear any of that stuff so why do you care?

BishyBarnyBee · 24/09/2024 14:23

How old are you, OP? Because you will be an older woman one day - hopefully - and then you will start to understand.

All the middle aged clichés are rooted in the realty of ageing.

Sensible shoes - foot pain and mobility issues. Short haircuts - thinning hair. Ubiquitous blonde - greying hair. Cardigans - hot flushes. Elastic waists and comfy bras - circulation issues, water retention, weight gain.

Big colourful glasses - deteriorating eyesight, washed out complexion, wrinkles, sagging. A bit of colour adds definition and stops you fading into the wallpaper. The women who wear the bright glasses wouldn't look better without them. They'd just be invisible. Which is what middle aged women are supposed to be.

The funny thing is, most of us probably feel far happier with how we look than many younger women do. Life is pretty damn good and other people's opinions are less important than our own sense of self worth. I feel bloody great in my bright colours and sensible shoes.

WilmaFlintstone1 · 24/09/2024 14:33

About to play around with different frames.
I’m 59 and long ago gave up what anyone else thinks,

So to the younger sneering folk….here I am and confident in myself,

Hope you reach the same self confidence some day;

I always go for bigger frames, I like to actually have a larger area for vision. Actually my glasses are generally pretty boring but I’m about to find some more cheerful styles . Nowt too ridiculous but less boring than the current ones.
