To ask when Timmy Mallett became such a style icon for middle aged women?

Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

@SisterAgatha
We need to swap out all those 'better' statements for.....
Better to ignore everyone and do as you please.

Instagram is full of fantastic people leading individual lives, dressing as Victorians, land girls whatever. It's bloody good fun and life would be more interesting and joyful if everyone had a hoot.

I’m agreeing with you, my glasses are the size of my car and have been since I was 3.

Read all my earlier posts, I think everyone on this thread slating people for just wearing what they like are nasty bullies.

CraverSpud · 24/09/2024 09:47

Slightly off subject but recently saw some of Timmy's paintings he is an excellent artist. Check out his facebook page.

FifiFalafel · 24/09/2024 09:47

Dungarees are bloody comfortable and I live in them.

Also, I'm a gardener and they stop you getting that builders bum/gardeners sunburn thing you get if you're wearing jeans and a top that ride apart.

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2024 09:48

Timmy Mallet has always been awesome so even the OP’s comparison to him is shortsighted. Maybe she needs glasses (but only approved ones sent to a committee of bland people)

FifiFalafel · 24/09/2024 09:49

Waves to @SisterAgatha from behind my big glasses. I've been wearing them since I was three too. I knew you were agreeing with me and was agreeing with you. 😎 (Couldn't find a smiling emoji with ordinary specs....that's probably significant).

AvocadoShake · 24/09/2024 09:54

OP is, presumably, an adult who has never let go of the mentality of a 13-year-old bully.

Hilarious that you’ve tried to frame this sexist garbage as concern for women “hiding their faces”.

And no I don’t have those glasses, and I’m not that age. I still think this is a horrible thread.

Dungarees are toddler clothes imo!

Toddler's clothes are:

  1. practical
  2. comfortable
  3. fun/visually appealing

At what age should women and girls put aside practical, comfortable and fun clothes?

endofthelinefinally · 24/09/2024 10:01

If you need good quality varifocals you need large frames.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/09/2024 10:07

Firstly I think Prue Leith looks fantastic, but secondly she needs those glasses TO SEE. They are not just something she picked up in Claire's Accessories.

If you have a complex lens prescription you need a solid frame.

amusedbush · 24/09/2024 10:13

Better Dennis Taylor than Dennis Nilson, which is who DH compared me to when I bought wire framed glasses a couple of years ago.

I sent them back and haven't strayed from acetate frames since 😂

WonderlandinAlice · 24/09/2024 10:21

bought some rather bright glasses for a change for myself lately, feel like the shine has been taken off of them a bit, I will try not think of Timmy Mallett when I look in the mirror 😱

MartinCrieffsLemon · 24/09/2024 10:35

DappledThings · 24/09/2024 07:30

If you like them carty on wearing them. You don't have to change them just because some magazines tells you the fashion has changed.

More that as fashion changes it's harder to find them than changing with fashion
I'm not one for following fashion trends anyway 😉

GuPuddingRamekinHoarder · 24/09/2024 10:39

I like big glasses and sunglasses, my eyes feel better in them.

Not everything is for the male gaze / your gaze, @PuttingOnTheKitsch

Please don’t listen to nobheads who want to make you dress and accessorise for men.

Wear what you like, I bet you look lovely.

dustoffthebooks · 24/09/2024 10:40

Many older people have to wear varifocal lenses which require a larger frame in order to work properly or would you rather women walked around with a second pair of spectacles hung around their neck like years ago? I suppose you'd ridicule them too.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 24/09/2024 10:41

Goldenbear · 24/09/2024 08:49

Yes, it is horrible isn't it, worse at secondary school. My DD is a young teen and very interested in fashion design, is adventurous with jewellery but definitely converts to conformity for school. I'm hoping 6th form college in a few years will be more accepting as my DS definitely wears what he wants now he attends and has his tribe!

One of the first things I brought for uni was a bright pink pair of Doccers which I'd always wanted and could now justify as I'd have chance to wear them!

I reported that comment at 2.14 this morning.

Me too but they left it up, even though it's pretty offensive

@MartinCrieffsLemon I honestly don't think I understand the "guidelines" I've reported other posts which are factually incorrect and or offensive and get the reply it does not break guidelines, had several consecutive with moderators about it. Yet I had the Mumsnet calling email for telling someone they were Gossips ( I'm not allowed to repeat it I presume) when the people in question were factually and legally incorrect

It’s violently offensive!

Report it then, surely if people find it offensive it should be removed

Oh you've had an email telling you posts have been removed of yours? I've had them removed and had no idea why!

But that one, implying there's something wrong with being autistic and a lesbian and that people only dress a certain way because they are autistic and a lesbian, is ok?

Thistooshallpass24 · 24/09/2024 11:18

Yes two removed I knew nothing about, one for the gossip comment told them i stand by it 😁
Agree the comment that we've reported should go x

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 24/09/2024 11:24

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2024 09:32

Exactly. But yes we must all fit the same mould or be ridiculed, even when that involves things like glasses to just be able to see.

Better to get contacts.
Better to blend in.
Better to get very expensive eye surgery.
Better to change yourself not to upset mother.
Better to change yourself not to upset that mum from the school who looks at me strangely.
Better to be someone or something else.

What sad and enslaved lives.

"Sad and enslaved lives"

This is a hilariously histrionic reaction to someone saying that they don't like glasses with OTT plastic frames.
